Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Take as much time as you need. I’ll be around somewhere when you feel up to chatting.

sounds like you have heavy item to talk through with your mum. Sending hugs and best wishes you both can sort things out

@Cuddlebear roller blinds have been installed. After showing me how to operate the remote control, by putting the blinds down and up, they screwed the holder for the remote onto back wall. They worked really good as a team, being at my place for about 2hrs.

I made it to Mexican Trains this afternoon (didn’t think I was going to make it as had been told the team of 2 would be at my place for at least 3 hrs), wishing I didn’t go. Discussion toward the end of the game left me feeling uncomfortable, best way to summarise it is it feel under the wide umbrella of “political related”. Was supposed to be a friendly social activity only. My score the last few rounds got worse and worse. I couldn’t concentrate on the game whilst 2 at the table with me, both not known to be quiet, complained and then started verbally running xx number of people down. Similar happened last year due to same issue. Waiting to talk with my psych next week about these incidents and possible impact on me isolating last year and having mood swings the last 4 Thursday nights

I received email from my GP clinic, I will need to wait until I have my next face to face appointment with my GP to discuss and request for list of meds to be updated on my file. That appointment is mid May. This is ridiculous!

I can’t make sense of some messages from an acquaintance of mine. I sent FB message asking if they would like to come for visit at my place one day. Reply was that their cats are very timid and hide from strangers hence prefers to meet at cafe. I have replied with emphasis on the words My Place and My cats plus about respecting their wishes. I don’t get it.

croquet tomorrow morning which I’m looking forward to. Electrician coming in the afternoon to install power point for the blinds. Atm thinking as of Friday taking some days completely for me, just me and the cats. No connection with people or the world outside my front door.

hoping you and your 4 footed man were able to get some relief from the hot weather today. I don’t cope well on these hot days. I’m not found of winter, at least I can add clothing in winter to help get warm

Hey @AlwaysMyself, I'm so glad you reached out to 1800RESPECT and they were supportive and you learnt something about yourself ❤️ It's so important for us to challenge behaviours that are do not align with our values and how we would treat others. And reaching out and talking about it is a big step to take!! So well done ✔️

Thank you for your positive and encouraging feedback it really means a lot and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know how it went!!

Take care

RiverSeal ❤️ ❤️

@Flutterbug9 Hello how are you?

I so happy the shutters are done. That is so good as I know you’ve put in a lot of effort to have them installed. They will make a big difference to your home too. 🙂

Im sorry that the Mexican Train activity didn’t go well and left you feeling uncomfortable. I presumed it is supposed to be a fun social event which should help bring feelings of joy and happiness. I’m sorry that’s not what happened. It’s a good idea to bring it up with your psych.

It’s so frustrating having to wait that long to update a medical record that should be correct in the first place. A while ago we were discussing this and it seems to happen more frequently than I thought.

It seems your friend had miss understood or miss read your message. I’m hoping with your reply they understand you mean coming to your place.

That’s great you’ve got electrician coming for power point!

it’s impirtant to take time for yourself and spend it with kitties!

My furry friends are well but one of my cats is still unwell and it’s causing me a lot of worry.

Im just home. Nothing on for me.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Electrician has not long gone. Was nice to deal with someone who was very proficient plus pleasant to talk to and checked a couple of things with me whilst at my place. Electrician has done a good job. Power leads have been shortened with all the cords tucked up neatly in one corner up.

like all activities where I live, they are supposed to be fun. Part of yesterday afternoon was definitely not like that.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow night and being part of a lot larger group of people who get together to play the game. Not consciously thinking about but am aware my mood my crash after the game is finished plus will be stiff and sore (game takes approx two and half to three hours to play, from time game starts until it finishes no one gets up and moves). I enjoy the time there plus it’s also making me have to deal with feeling uncomfortable around people I don’t know.

My team played croquet this morning against a competitive but friendly team. This morning our teams played a tie breaker which my team won.p by one point. It felt like my team were not playing well, was nice surprise with the score person told us we had to play the tie breaker.

at this stage, next Wednesday afternoon I might be playing trivia. Afternoon trivia is only on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Last month my friend and I didn’t go as we both were not well. The month before there was 20 people there. The organisers set up 3 teams of 6 which left my friend and I as a team on our own. If happens again next week I won’t be going again.

I read a note couple days ago about female only billiards each Wednesday afternoon. I’m hoping this goes ahead, I haven’t played billiards since each teen years. Am definitely interested in playing again.

Im sorry to hear your cat is still not well. Hoping their health improves quickly and that they are back to their usual self.

@AlwaysMyself 🤗💜

trying not to message you so you can focus on you. I care a lot about you.

wishing I could lift the weight, from the feelings of uncertainty about the future regarding your mum, from you

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello bunny how are you today? Were you able to get some sleep and rest?

I misunderstood your previous message regarding your mum. I’m sorry it was my fault for not understanding that there is a pattern of behaviour. I didn’t realise she had offered help and then used it resentfully towards you in the future. That is very different to what I thought was going on. You don’t deserve to be treated in that way and I am certain knowing you that you are very appreciative and would even do things for her to show her that. I can understand feeling very cautious now at accepting any help.

I think that speaking to your counsellor is a really wise decision. They can help unpack it and provide suggestions on how to work through this. You’re a very logical person and correct me if I’m wrong when I say that you see the problem and then try to fund humane solutions. You are not a vindictive person and you try really hard to see where others are coming from.

When do you see your counsellor next?

There’s no need to apologise. We’re all going through a lot right now and all doing our very best re the forums.

Sending you a lot of love and hugs my friend. I’m here when you need 🙂

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 Obviously I won't re-say what I've just answered on the other thread lol. But in case you read this first - it's posted over there, I'm not ignoring it 🙂 .

Sounds like you got a lot of things done on Monday (hosing/washing)

... (Oh gosh! I just remembered I put my washing in the machine and it was finished nearly 3 hours ago! OK, after this post I'll do it - right? surely I will remember this time?) ...

& the bins & the GP email & dishwasher. Well done! 🙂 That is very productive. 🙂

Do you find it easier or harder to get the things like the washing of the walls/glass/tiles/etc done when you have a "due date" like the blind installation?

Hoping the install yesterday went to plan and 100% done for the alfresco-blind install, and then also this afternoon with the electrician to do the power-points for it. 🙂 (I'm guessing that batteries ended up not being a possibility? I had noticed it went back to the power outlet method?)

I hope you find it helpful to do the activity/task calendar 🙂

I know of people who also explicitly "schedule" self-care/enjoyment activities into their calendar too -- including things like "take a bath", "reading a book time", etc. 🙂

Wondering when your next appointment with your psych is? 🙂

I realise I don't know whether you see them weekly, fortnightly, monthly, adhoc, etc. And you don't have to say either! Just sometimes wonder when I hear "next appointment" how long away that timeframe is - so that I don't "ask too soon" how it went 🙂 .

I'm glad the adhoc/random basis on the forum is working better for you. 🙂 It really is important to find what works best for you. And as you say - it's always OK to just do a few posts and save the rest until another time.

Laughing in a loving and relating way to the numerous alarms to do things and "mental notes" that then get forgotten. I'm glad they let you pay the next day after the cut-off still 🙂 . I know when I worked in a social club as an office manager, it was really common for some people to forget the due dates and especially when we knew the people we weren't concerned if they were a day or two late. The hardest part was not knowing if to follow-up with someone (if they forgot) or whether they may have been trying to indirectly opt-out and not wanting to put social pressure on them lol. But if someone had been talking about the upcoming event for a few weeks, but then forgot to pay - chances are they just forgot lol.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 @Cuddlebear

Monday night accommodation had nice aircon 🙂

I didn't realise you bedroom didn't have adequate cooling/fan @Cuddlebear 😞 That would be very difficult. And Melbourne can have real stinking hot days too in summer!

Dogs were very excited to see me when I got home yesterday. Both slept in the bedroom all of the night too (often one or both move to the lounge room during the night sometime).

There were a few nice things during the time away. A few interesting places/shops to see. And nice to see my cousins a little. Lots of unhealthy food - which is a nice treat, but also set me back to where I was pre-Christmas -- but that's OK, back to my "normal" food routine now and I will continue in a healthier direction again.

@Cuddlebear I don't mind that you misunderstood - that it very understandable and normal. 🙂 I know I misunderstand what people say sometimes too!

I am trying to focus on the fact that I should have enough savings to pay for the next 10 months without needing my mum's financial assistance. This is unless I take any holidays or have more medical expenses (which I know I will have) - but if I do get Centrelink during the next 10 months then that could probably pay for those "extra" medical costs without me needing to get money from my mum. I've been quite distressed this week about the impending financial dependency, and hence realised I need to think about how long my savings will last me and focus on that as a "positive" that I don't need to worry about dependency until after that. Ironically, those savings will run out likely around the same time as the research trial is due to be completed for my involvement lol.

I see my counsellor on Friday, and she is aware I want to talk on the topic (but not what specifically - I just gave her a prompt to raise with me).

You are all very loving and supportive @Flutterbug9 @Cuddlebear @Shaz51 and I very much appreciate it, especially when I have been a bit all over the place between being super busy and then other times being very mentally distressed. And also the times in-between where I have also been able to be a positive influence and (I hope) support to you and others too.

It's both harder and easier to be understanding more things this year. It gives validation, but also can feed into despair more too. But coming off the medication I definitely have more "energy" but also more fatigue bouncing off that high level of emotional-energy. I am frequently having to tell myself to "stop. breath. calm. slow-down-mind." It's exhausting in a different way to how I was exhausted when on the medication & working. But on the upside, I laugh more too (at the odd/silly things I see in life; not just in a cynical way).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 Just reading updates now that blinds and power-points were all successful 😄 Yay!

Sorry that Mexican Trains last night (Tuesday) was not a good experience because of the topic of conversation.

I struggle with that too sometimes, if people as a group are discussing a topic I find difficult emotionally to listen to, I don't feel I can ask them to change the topic (because it's me and my emotions to manage, right?) but I also know how it affects my mood and then I can't "tune it out" either (unless I put fingers in my ears - which would be seen as rude).

If it were close friends who knew me, I think these days I'd be able to saying something like, "I'm really sorry to ask - but would anyone mind if we changed the topic? I'm just finding it really hard at the moment." But I think I'd only do that with friends I really trusted and felt comfortable with. But having said that, I personally wouldn't mind if someone else who I don't even know well asked it of me! I'd be happy to change the topic (unless it was literally the topic focus of the meeting that is, lol)

Re: GP -- May is a long time away. *sigh*. Could you get one sooner if you wanted to, just for the medication list update? (And ask them to bulk-bill and/or telehealth?)

Re: Friend and visiting your place.

I am curious how this panned out! It also sounds to me like they may have misread your message as you visiting their place. However, it is clear they do want to meet up with you - which is nice! 🙂

I hope you were able to clear it up with them and clarify whether they were OK to come to yours (some people don't like visiting others homes though I also know) or best at a cafe.

Glad croquet was against a friendly competitive team today. 🙂 And yay winning is a bonus too!

Friday day for yourself sounds lovely @Flutterbug9 !

@Cuddlebear Sorry to hear one of your cats is still unwell 😞

That's been a week or so now, hasn't it? Do you/vet know what is wrong?

I imagine that is very stressful, as I know I feel very stressed when my dogs are unwell.
