Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Yep, I reckon it will take a while for DSP to process/review/respond to application @Cuddlebear , which is why I want to get it in ASAP after I get the Functional Capacity Assessment from the psychologist and anything I need from the GP. If I get the psych stuff mid-April, that gives me 1 month before my work pay ceases. That will be enough to get onto Job Seeker, but I'm not sure if it will be long enough for them to assess a DSP application. But the difference in income is a concern for me because I want to pay for my own bills as much as I can, and even a DSP won't cover my weekly medical/disability support costs. I'll be having to dig into my savings when this month's creditcard bill is due too because of my GP appointments plus psychology assessment fees on top. But in saying this, I am still so grateful that I am able to cover my costs currently and that I do have some savings to draw on, and that when I can't then my mum will give me free board/rent since I live with her (unless I get rent assistance of course, which would then be able to be paid to her). I really don't want to be financially dependant on any person; there is so much potential for control-politics and resentment-against-me and guilt-by-me if I am. Mum says one thing but behaves a different way, so whilst she says she wants to pay for me to live, she doesn't even pay for things that make her own life less-stressful (instead she get tired & irritable and takes it out on me at times). She comments on "not being able to afford" things (i.e. not wanting to pay for them; she does have the money to!) -- and yet she wants me to be OK with her paying for my life expenses? No thanks!

I'm looking forward to going home in a few days. Aircon. My own space (rather than my only self-space being a stinking-hot-room with only a bed to sit on). I know I "should" be looking forward to seeing my dogs, but I'm not - they're effort.

Hey @Flutterbug9 🥰 just ducking on quick while i remember (5hr driving day today! Halfway home stop for the night this arvo).

I was a bit puzzled (but not in a negative way 😊) about your comment the other day about not liking people asking you for info about former-work knowledge areas. Sorry I'm on my phone, so I can't quote what you said - i know these are not your words and are just my interpretation of the words! (Do let me know if i misunderstood it though 🥰). I can definitely understand why someone would not want to feel "used" for their knowledge/utility. But i do also know that for some other people they actually love being asked about topics they have knowledge in (e.g. perhaps if i ask about your knowledge in model trains, for example, if its an interest topic then this is something many people love being able to be someones "expert" in and getting to talk about).

I guess I am concerned that perhaps you misunderstood why I was tagging you in my post replies to CB with updates on my life/trial/applications, and maybe felt I was expecting you to answer my questions about the application because of your existing knowledge. 🤔. If so, it wasnt my intent/motive 😊. I tagged you because you have mentioned you like to be tagged in updates on my progress/life (so i don't have to say things twice, so that people dont feel left out, etc etc i am guessing based on what i observe in social "rules").

Your second post with the AI summary really confused me this morning, which is what got me thinking (in a positive reflective way 😊) about it. And is what has prompted me to wonder if you may have misunderstood why I tagged you 😊.

It is totally OK if you misinterpreted! 🤗

And it is also totally OK if I have misunderstood and over-analysed this! 🤣🤗

I don't know which it is. But i do know i like your friendship and that being open and clear about thing like this when confused is really healthy and helpful between us. 🤗🥰.

I hope you are doing OK.

Monday today. Wondering whether you saw a movie yesterday (if so, was it good? And wondering which movie). And wondering how the geneology webinars(?) are going. 😊 and struggling to remember whether the alfresco blind installation is today or tomorrow (or Wednesday) - oh dear, my brain is failing on the exact day but i recall it is blinds and then the electrician after, and both are this week 😇. I do take an interest, just that sometimes my memory isnt great.

I know you may have already posted about these things since i was online the other night - and if so i will get to reading them when i can; i don't expect you to have to re-type/re-post 😘. But i am thinking of you even before i have time to dedicate to forumland 🥰.

Sorry for the confusion @AlwaysMyself thanks for asking for clarification. I definitely like the way the two of us prefer to seek clarification on things, as compared to not asking which could lead to lots of disasters.

feeling of being used I’ve experienced more than once before. Usually results in one or both parties feeling uncomfortable with unpleasant atmosphere. I miss read your tag, my mistake.

at times my brain comes up with these wonderful ideas that sound good to me, maybe not so to others. I have no way of knowing unless someone says something.

I read the bit about wondering how long before outcome of claim/s might be take. Opted to do Google search if I could find anything for you hence the most recent AI info. I know things have changed since I retired, wouldn’t fully rely on my old knowledge anyway.

hobbies, general things of interest, activities I do, places I’ve been to or go too etc, all those types of things are very different and I enjoy talking about. Mentioning that, on to the interesting things.

yesterday - didn’t go to the cinema, movie didn’t interest me. Movie that shows is to be played next Sunday has grabbed my interest “Local Hero”, made in 1983 and stars Burt Lancaster.

today, Monday - hosed down back wall of my place, washed the both sliding doors (one is triple glass sliding doors with double fly screens, other is double glass sliding door and single fly screens), “watered” and scrubbed the alfresco tiles, filled recycle bin ready to go out later this week. Email sent to GP practice asking why my ‘current medication list’ is not up to date, what needs to be done to have it updated etc. (new MCHP done via Telehealth with GP on Friday shows meds list still hasn’t been updated). Uploaded dishwasher.

Tomorrow, Tuesday - team of 2 due at my place 10:45am to install both roller blinds, estimated to be at my place 3 to 4 hrs. First thing in the morning need to sweep the floors, put couple things away that are on kitchen table and bring out my 2 tone brick bear plus super glue and start to reassemble the bear. Tomorrow evening collect groceries from supermarket which I ordered yesterday. (Debating whether to go to local pizzeria and get pizza for dinner).

Wednesday - leave my place by 9:20am and walk to croquet, my match due to start at 9:45am. Possibly watch the match after mine. Check mailbox and walk home. Electrician due to arrive at my place approx 1:30, estimated to be at my place couple hrs as is not a straight forward installation of a power point.

Thursday - back to normal with Mexican trains at 7pm. aim to print out and work on activity/tasks calendars. One good my previous psychologist did have me try at one stage was a weekly calendar to help me stay on track with getting things done. Nothing flash. Drew up an idea on my laptop using excel. As I mentioned to my current psychologist last week, think I need to use it again, at least for awhile. Psych has asked for update at next appointment.

im still on and off the forums on random basis which seems to be working for me. Finding I tend to jump on when want to post something, go through the xx notifications (was low 20’s of notifications one day), read, reply if appropriate (or make note to reply another day) and sign off.

I have calendar notes and alarms set on my phone for everything, if not I know I’m bound to forget. Thursday last week put my name on list to take part in lunch being put on for St Patrick’s day and made a mental note to pay the 💰 that night. Think you can guess what did NOT happen.

lucky for me, I got a message this morning asking if I was still wanting to attend and that cut of for payment was technically last night. They let me pay today,

wondering if I don’t query or follow up on things as I forget. Lol

I have sent you some other posts, know you will reply when you can. 😊

hoping wherever you stay tonight has aircon and that you are able to get good night of sleep. Hoping your dogs aren’t too over the top when they see you and that you chance to catch up on sleep, if needed

looking forward to any highlights from your time away, you haven’t already mentioned. 😊🤗

@Flutterbug9 Hello lovely how are you?

I use my calander for everything too. It really helps me or I forget.

You have a busy week. I’m glad you’re doing some things this week thet you enjoy.

I too am on and off forums just because I’m unwell. I think if you and hope you are doing ok.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you? How was the drive home? I hope it went well. Did you enjoy your break?

Yes it will take a little while to process. I understand to want to be financially independent A DSP will give you some independence but as you say it won’t cover all medical costs. It’s good you’ve got some savings and if you can save in rent that would make a real difference.

I know it’s difficult to maybe having to rely on your mum. It can make you feel bad when people are saying they can’t afford this or that. However, your mum as you said does have the money and she loves you. I’m sad she takes it out on you at times. That must feel awful especially after she’s offered you that support. How are you feeling at the moment? I think you will be able to work rhings out financially. Your mum might be a type of person who can sometimes complain about this or that but still doesn’t mind being a hekp to you. It was her idea and she wouldn’t offer if she didn’t want to do it? I’m thinking of you and really want rhings to go smoothly for you. I’m glad you feel you can talk here and reach out anytime you need.

I hear you on the heat in a bedroom as mine is like that. It’s hard in summer and I can’t tolerate it at all. I hope you’re home and enjoying your own space now. Yes dogs are a lot of work. They would have. When very happy to see you home. 🙂

@Cuddlebear @Shaz51 @Flutterbug9

Back home this arvo which is good.

Not doing well myself, lots of hard feelings. Sorry i haven't been able to respond; please bear with me and know it is not personal to any of you. *sending hugs*

@Cuddlebear problem is.. my mum does offer help to people when she doesnt want to help them. And complains about it to other people later. And sometimes to me in the past she has then used it resentfully in the future that has done XYZ for me (even though i have been appreciative and she offered herself, i didnt ask).

Its a topic i have mentioned to my counsellor i want to discuss when i see her. And its only been getting for me since someone opened my eyes to the behavioural patterns, as i'm not seeing examples from the past that fit the pattern of behaviours, and seeing the more aubtle hints of it most days, and recalling comments others have made in the past that i have dismissed because "she's well-intent and cares for me."

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@RiverSeal I want to say a "belated thank you".

Earlier this year you responded to a post I made with a suggestion for 1800RESPECT as a support to talk about things with my mum. At the time, I didn't really consider it further because "1800RESPECT is for domestic violence/abuse", and "my mum cares for me - she isn't abusive". And I had no idea why it would be relevant for me 😅 (oops! my bad!)

I had a conversation with someone earlier this week after a number of small incidents I'd been having with my mum which have been affecting me emotionally a lot. Fortunately for me I guess, they recognised the behavioural pattern I was describing and suggested it could be a specific type-of-trait. Every time I said, "nah, because XYZ also.." they explained how that was actually a very typical pattern in this trait-group, and suggested some future-reading for me (because that is how I cope with people - to learn about their motives/perspectives/emotions so i can inform my own behaviours/responses). So I've been doing reading this week, and in the back of my mind I also had a memory that someone on the forum had suggested the family violence/abuse line in the past once, so I've just gone back to find it and read what I posted. And yep, guess what? It fits the pattern. Thank you. You "saw" something in what I said that I didn't even know of at the time. Behaviours that I thought/assumed were "normal" even though they caused me distress.

I just wanted to give you this positive and encouraging feedback. 😘
