Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

That's so positive to hear about your peer support worker. @AlwaysMyself

Hmm, I understand that... these programs should be inherently collaborative, so I think it's completely okay for you to let your peer worker know that right now is where your focus needs to be, in order for you to consider a long-term that feels light for you. Given your life experiences so far, I think it makes sense to nourish the now and you are more than allowed to honour that.

Oh, yes! I apologise - as I sent this, I thought, "I hope they know I am not referring to them in general!", because I absolutely agree - you come across very comfortable and connected to yourself. I know we have discussed how sometimes this can be tough with others you have to mask around, which is why I was thinking, maybe the acknowledgement of a potential neurodivergence may allow for more compassion when maintaining the mask is hard. (I hope that makes sense.)

I was talking about this with an AuDHD friend today actually - I also wish that we didn't have to feign feelings or thoughts so much. It's exhausting and it makes it hard to simply be.

It must be really tough being met with rationalisation when you're attempting to experience. What response do you wish she would have to your feelings?

That's okay! You're allowed to be negative - it's a very valid part of you that sounds like it needs to be heard.

I wonder what that 'negative' part of you needs most right now? 🤔💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

The support worker knows my main "goal" is to stay alive until the trial 😅 @AuntGlow , and within that context that can also be helped by improving the quality/ease of life. Hence body-doubling is one of our "goals" because it makes doing those things easier for me than if i try to do them without company. But its not a traditional goal perspective for the program because its not "developing capability/skills" to do it myself as such. But our plan is we can talk about things (eg. Their idea to brainstorm anything i might be *interested* to do, to try to find something positive). And they can also help me go through prep for applying for centrelink/dsp/ndis if i decide to - but i want to talk to the new GP about this first to see her perspective and only if she supports it. Theres no point if the gp doesnt think i meet criteria for application (although i expect she will think i do, but i dont want to set expectations - i want to go in without either way).

I don't mask nearly as much as i used to. Often i just don't care any more, especially if its either people who know me well or strangers. The time i will still mask is when it is people i want/need to be around and they don't know me well enough yet (or perhaps are not self-assured in themselves) and would get offended by my ... natural lack of affect/interest and directness.

I figure if someone has gotten to know me properly, then they will either like me and accept how i am naturally, or else they wont like me (and thats ok too) and then i dont have to spend energy with a draining friendship. Its a win-win as far as im concerned. But its just a matter of establishing those friendships to the point where they get to know me enough.

I wish there was something that helped the negative part of me when it is more present. The only thing i have found is to acknowledge/validate it, and if its still too strong to put aside of mind then to allow it to have voice to talk about it with another person (hence my trips tp safe haven) so it doesnt feel like its just an echochamber of my own brain that no one else "gets". The challenge is that it is a very logical arguement it presents and I/we can't even find 'holes' in the logic as to why I should keep living if these last-resort treatments dont work. So when the negative feelings are related to having to wait and try these remaining treatment options (which cost a small fortune, unless through a research trial that naturally cannot guarantee real treatment) when I am already very much content to cease being. (Sorry, i realise this is a really hard thing for a lot of people to read. I am safe - i have made a promise to do the research trial. I keep my promises, as it is a strong value of mine. If it helps the reader, there is hope that maybe the treatment will help and i will then want to live - thats the aim of trying it!)

..its sort of like... what do you do with those feelings? When they're valid based on consistent, long term experience and also not irrational or illogical?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

The car is very clean @Chasingsunsets , and i would happily book them again if i want to get my other car cleaned. Which reminds me to leave a review online because part of my caution with them was there were none!

I have also yesterday ordered some replacement buttons for my car keys, since they're worn out and thus havent been able to use the remote un/lock for a few years now. I think thats the last thing i *need* to do for sale.

Its hard to know how much to list it for for sale. There are not many of my exact year/model on the market and they vary widely in price due to mileage and location. I think i am in a higher-price location, and my mileage is on the lower side of average I think (its nearly 14yo). But it has a few paint scratches which will reduce the price. And a few spots where the paint is more sun-faded than other areas. But those are both purely aesthetics. The car detailer thought i could sell it for more than I was thinking. I guess i can always list it at the higher price initially and then drop it. But i dont want to take too long to sell it. Hopefully i can list it without a roadworthy certificate with the agreement that i will obtain one prior to sale once i have a serious buyer who will commit to buying it pending the certificate. Otherwise the certificate only lasts 1 month, and no garuntee of a buyer or then time for them to transfer title with the Rego.

I told the cleaner if he find a buyer who will pay above what i was thinking of selling it for, he can keep the extra $ as finders fee 😅.

Nice one @AlwaysMyself glad you happy with it 🤩, how nice is it when you get into a nice clean car!

Hows you week going?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Lol no car that my dogs travel in is ever clean @Chasingsunsets 😅 - they shed too much fur lol. 2min and it wont look clean anymore haha. I'll still use the clean car until i sell.it, but not for the dogs!

My week was been... still challenging with mood/thoughts.

How was yours?

How does this upcoming week look for you?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Haha you are not wrong @AlwaysMyself re the dogos 😂, I have three types of covers in my car in the passenger seat section for indi 😂. They actually do so well though I have to say!! The top cover I buy is like a waterproof hammock type thing joins to the back of the front seats and zips to zip in the ends, does well to keep the sand contained 😂. Indi loves it she is actually really lost without it 😅.

I hear you re where you are at. I’d have to say a little rough my end too, I forgot I usually have a rough time in Feb and March also so that’s four out of 12 that aren’t the best for me but ah well. Nothing much for my week will just let myself sleep as long as I want tomorrow, have a lot of errands which will likely not be done tomorrow (even though I’d love them to be done), thought I had an appt tomorrow but it’s for Wednesday so quite glad I picked up on that this evening 🤭, but don’t want the appt anyway, I just feel unprepared under resourced etc but nothing I can really do about it. So yeah nothing too exciting my end, but that’s ok. 🙂

I really loved the dinner you shared on the highlights chat running behind on replies as always but it looked delicious!! What was it?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Good to hear from you @AlwaysMyself 😊

Glad to hear that you're still giving stuff a go, even if it tips into that 'dislike' territory - and that you're seeing it as a skill to learn instead of just writing it off entirely.

Also just thinking about your language quiz that's coming up. Did you chat to your teacher/tutors at all about the potential of getting a topic prior? I'm getting a wee inkling this might be another autistic thing - for myself and many of my friends, talking at-length on a topic with zero interest or knowledge usually results in not having much to contribute, or just outright sitting in silence. I know special provisions aren't always possible without an official diagnosis, but perhaps you could highlight that this is a recent suggestion from a psych and thus you may not have the paperwork to back it up yet - but that if you could at least perhaps be allowed some kind of concession... perhaps supplying them with a range of topics that you know would get your brain-motor running and then they still 'surprise you' with which one of them it is on the day?

If it were me in your shoes, getting a topic I have zero interest in sprung upon me, I can imagine myself following my mental tangents along until it is something interesting!! But... I guess that's not the assignment 😅

E.g. "Okay talk about cars..."

"Ahh yes cars, well I know that they mostly use petrol engines, which is made from oil. And oil is from dinosaurs decomposing over millenia... did you know that most tv depictions of dinosaurs are actually inaccurate? They were probably a lot more plump, and had feathers...."

😝

Sorry to hear things can be a bit rough for you this time of year @Chasingsunsets . I know you know, but just reminding you still - I'm here in whatever way I can be for you. 😊 Always let me know if there is something you'd like to chat about (or not chat about!) or anything you want to share is always OK with me (but also never any pressure to).

I hope you got to have your really good sleep in today. 😊. And maybe even had a chance to feel more prepared for your appointment.

I made "my version of" a spinach & feta quiche. Except that I don't use cream or pastry/crust lol. And this time I also added bacon & semi-dried tomatoes too to bulk it a bit.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

🤣 @Jynx I adore how you get from cars to dinosaurs lol 😍. I wish I could do that for the assessment lol. They are testing the ability to talk about "abstract concepts", so if I could get it onto psychology that would be the way haha. I haven't emailed them yet, but it is on my list to-do this week. I am also considering whether I can maybe grab some time with a friend next week to 'practice' with, but she is very time-poor (and ADHD) so i really don't think she will be able to (but I can ask, and she can say no).

I plan to do some 'brain storming' on the possible topics too. I looked up what the 3 possible ones are:

  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Environmental issues
  • Employment

One thing that will make this one easier than the last is that instead of a 1:1 conversation it will be a group of 4 people - so I can "bounce" off their comments more. However, I am also aware this means I have less control over where the topic direction goes and this could accidentally venture into emotionally-triggering realms for me in either the "healthy lifestyles" or "employment" topics - because of my chronic mental illness and physical limitations and experiences at work the past 2 years. I'm pretty good at keeping my cool in group conversations but that is by withdrawing from the conversation when overwhelmed or seeing early-triggers - which is not an option for the assessment.. ... On the other hand though, I do have some strong thoughts on those 2 topics 🤣 when it is safe to talk about them! Environmental issues... I can probably bounce off other people enough, but I have no conversational interest in it even though I do think it is important and 'do my part' to be aware and minimise impacts where I can. ... I can talk about the environmental impacts of tourism 🤣😂 - i did a whole uni subject on it ecotourism (which is broader than just environmental, but includes it). Not sure I can steer a whole group of people into talking about tourism though lol. Depends who gets the floor first to respond 😂. "Oh environmental impacts.. yes... Botswana is a very interesting case with the impacts of tourism both positive and negative for the environment...."

PS - GP has given me name of someone she recommends for an autism assessment today. She reckons there is a high probability I would be diagnosable, and that it would help with ndis & centrelink applications if I am. Have emailed the clinic to enquire.
