Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

If I’m comfortable to share things I do. In the back of my mind is the guidelines with the forums plus thoughts on how it may be received/impact on others. I might hint at things. If I’m not comfortable saying things I don’t and people have 0% chance of getting things out of me.

with exactly what happened with the other profile ….. guess what, you not finding out 😂

Our life stories are different. Each life experience has possibility of impacting each and every person differently. If life for person A was easier or harder than life for person J …. I try not to entertain those thoughts.

for me, things I take notice of is the aspect of sharing. Is one person asking all the questions and never sharing anything or are things are a more equal level. I feel we are fairly even with sharing things with each other

predisposition to MH. Due to things that happened in previous generations, Ive asked that question and have some conversations with MH professionals over the years always getting the same response of “maybe”. If the stroke hadn’t happened, things would have continued as not “normal” with both my parents. To what degree remains unanswerable

Hard life being a cat hahaha

Looking forward to hearing how things go today. 🤗

hoping you know I’m here for you through all the ups and downs and how much I care about you

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AlwaysMyself Hello my friend. How are you today? I’m really glad you tagged me.

I realise you are feeling unwell after reading the information. I want you to know that having the PAT and additional supporys is a new combination and could help you irrespective of certain things not working in the past. You’ve got us here too which I hope you’ve found some help knowing that we care and that people have become better.

Im glad peer support will start today. It’s the first session so try not to put too much pressure on yourself. I can understand the goal setting because a lot of these brochures are so standard and not as deep as to what you can set up with the peer support worker. I’m interested to know how it goes today for you. Perhaps think about goals around the support need leading upto the trial and during the trial too?

I would like you to know how much I really do care about you and that I believe you can get a lot of benefit from this 12 months and want to continue going.

When Is peer support today?

Please keep in touch.

Hey @AlwaysMyself I just wanted to check in because I saw that you have a peer support session today which sounds great. I hope it all goes well, and I wanted to say a big good on you for giving it a go!

Also I want to highlight the strength that you've mentioned in the way that you're putting one foot in front of the other today and not giving up, even if you might want to. Being able to recognise this strength and perseverance in yourself is awesome and is not an easy thing

Thank you @Cuddlebear @Ru-bee .

Met with the PSW and chatted which was good; finished in a better mood than started. I told her about why the goal setting and "what gives you hope?" prompts were particularly difficult. We talked instead about finding deeper social connections (as that is meaningful to me), which was a good brain-topic-change I think.

Back home now after my massage this morning. Pain management is a real mental workout too lol. But the muscles always feel better for it after.

I am noticing some dizziness and nausea this morning (and very very slightly did yesterday) - which is in line with physical movement, and thus makes sense as being due to an additional medication dosage drop yesterday morning. 25% of what my longterm dosage had been. But really its pretty good considering what i knew it *might* be like. I was still able to drive today, it just made me feel mildly nauseous. Not distressing or problematic yet. I feel grateful and lucky for this.

@Ru-bee sometimes strengths feel like a catch-22. Perseverence is a great strength, but then I feel obligated to be self-reliant and keep going *because I can* (because I have the skills to). But that is also what parts of my emotion want to scream at me for -- to stop "keeping on" because i'm tired of it and nothing in me wants to (other than my other-centred thoughts). But i guess thats where i came to settle on a middle-ground of "something needs to change". Im not giving up yet, but i'm also saying its not OK for things to keep going how it has been. Its still hard to pull the part of me along that doesnt want to bother but at least its not having an full emotional tantrum about having to keep doing the same things without relief either. Its now more like a kid sitting in a corner sulking with its arms crossed 😅. "I don't wanna" 😅. Yes i can laugh at this image and recognise it for a childish emotional trantrum. The problem is the more i ignore that child in the corner, the more it gets upset and hurt by being ignored.

I'll see how I go, and if its still feeling this glum and hurt or defiant later i know i can drive up to the drop-in which opens in 2 hours from now. I do think talking it out safely about not *wanting* to can help - being heard. But I also know I can't talk about it more here than just acknowledging it exists.

Oohhh i miss those jokes @Flutterbug9 thank you 🥰. I accidently half-burnt myself on my seatbelt buckle last week in the 40's days lol. Accidently touched the metal part when reaching for it! Such an aussie summer thing the heat of the leather car (or motorbike lol) seats.

You are always welcome to ask me questions. Naturally i am very talkative, so it's been a conscious effort over years on my part to try *not* to dominate conversations, and to make more space for others to talk about themselves too. And since i like to understand others, remembering to do this is not a bad thing for me at all. But it is why i will sometimes hold back a little until asked - unless i see a clear benefit of sharing my experience to support someone.

The cats have a lovely sunny spot 😊🥰. No sunny spots indoors at my place currently. But one dog is happy sitting on a couch with her head on the armrest. Other dog has disappeared - he will either be in the carpeted hallway or the tiled hallway i think. Unless he has gone and found my mothers bed to sleep on 🤭 (i keep my bedroom door closed).

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I read your post about the tapering and the nausea .

if the nausea gets worse are there meds you can take?

im hoping it stops completely soon.

sounds like you are happy, relieved and have positive view after spending time with the PSW. Know that was resting heavy on your mind

i find I tend to not ask direct questions that fall under heading of “personal” eg your childhood. Listen, support etc when things along those things are shared. I admit I have a curious nature but there is also a line I try not to cross, regardless how much I would like to know.

with me, if you want to know things, feel free to ask. If fits into TMI, I’m not ok to answer etc, you will know 😂

note to self, include “acceptable” jokes to @AlwaysMyself at different times

photo was late yesterday with the sun coming through the sliding doors. My boy is currently curled up on top of cat scratcher, my girl is still in bed on my bed. Madam isn’t happy she’s not allowed in other bedroom anymore

@Flutterbug9 anti-nausea or anti-dizzy medication could be a good idea to ask the MH GP about tomorrow 🤔 since I'm seeing her (for the first time). I'm still feeling pretty dizzy now, even though ive just been sitting and using my phone for past hour... might need to put on a podcast/audio instead to see if closing my eyes helps. I think the dizziness is the worse of the 2 - because it is what creates the nausea but also what stops me being able to walk around or drive etc if it gets worse. And it wont be low BP, because mine has been on the high side lately.

You are likewise welcome to ask me anything you would like to know or are curious about 😊.

Same as you - if I don't want to say, i will say so. 😊. I'm quite immune to peer pressure (accidental and deliberate lol - which was good as a teen to be confident that way too!). There may be some things that I would be happy to share with you and other freiends here if only it were private and not public -- if thats the case I will let you know. I'd be happy to be a pretty open book with you if i were allowed (guidelines) and jf it wasnt public to everyone in the world potentially. But even then, i'm quite open because i dont think the general world is very interested in trying to find out who is behind my username lol. 😋.

Dark or darkened area. Laying down. Eyes closed.

all things I’ve found that can help ease dizziness.

vertigo and I are not strangers.

Regarding the open book and sharing. Take your time, there’s no rush. It can be a huge decision to make, even with the forums being anonymous. Won’t change anything from my perspective how much you share (including zero). I’ve shared parts of my story various times over the years on more than one site. Never as much as I did recently. Sharing my story helps me with my journey of facing, dealing with and coming to terms with/healing from things I’ve gone through

It’s sharing in these types of situations where it’s a pity there isn’t some way that things could be shared off the forums. Eg sane being the go between with emails ensuring everything is still anonymous. Something I know would not be possible, unfortunately

is MH GP appointment tomorrow morning or afternoon?

@AlwaysMyself I’m so glad the peer worker understood about goal setting and what gives you hope. I really wanted this to go well for you and to have a peer support that can think outside of the box so to speak. How did you find the discussion on finding deeper social connections? I know it is a meaningful area for you. The best bit is that I like that you felt in a little better mood than before the meeting. It will take a bit of time to get to know one another but today seems to have gone much better than you might have expected. Will you see them weekly?

Ah yes the massage is painful but the after effects are good. I totally understand what you mean as it’s been the same for me when I had massage through NDIS. It was remedial massage which is evidence based. I hope you can take a rest today and let that massage sink in so to speak.

Yes one of the taper side effects is dizziness and nausea. If it becomes intrusive you can get anti nausea meds from GP. It sounds like the taper is going much better than it has for me and I’m delighted to hear it. I’m still tapering it’s still not a good taper. Everyone is different so it’s hard to say how each person will respond. Plus factors like which medication, dosage, how long you’ve been on them etc play a role. As does the percentage drop. We’re very unlucky in Ausyralia with no real options for a hyperbolic taper. That would have been much better for me. But I also had the stuff up with a massive drop in first week while in APARC.

It makes a lot of sense to me when you say there’s two parts of you. The one side that keeps going because it can and the other side that wants to scream to stop keeping on because it is exhausting and relentless. I did chuckle at you saying it’s like a child in the corner after a tantrum. Time out for the tantrum.

It’s not easy getting through the days without the reward of enjoyment and joy. I’m really proud of you for continuing to find things that will help your mind be able to be rewarded for the things in life that are fun, bring joy and hope.
