Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Oh, no, hun @Flutterbug9 sorry, wasn't meaning to push at all! My question mark was that I couldn't remember if it had been a post from "yesterday" or the day before -- not at all about you editing anything. 😊. Sorry that you misinterpreted that. I can see how that could feel very threatening!! I was responding about the topic because you had asked about mine. 😊

I thought for a moment just now that today was Tuesday, and my mind said "haircut day!". ... then I realised that no, it's only Monday. Tomorrow is Haircut Day! 😍 Excited for you.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I'm only going to be online for 15min I think, unless I come back afterwards.

Came onto the forums this evening for distractions. Running out of threads tonight to distract myself with supporting others through. Don't want to involve in too many more threads because I don't want to "overcommit" to supporting more people, because I want to prioritise my amazing friends I already have here. So I'm being selective on which new threads/topics -- based on the ones I resonate more with.

I am aware of what triggered a decline in mood for me today. I decided to read over the booklet I have a copy of (that I believe is given to people in the GR/RC program), esp as I have my first peer-support session (not just paperwork session) tomorrow and I thought it could be good to help me prompt thoughts, or see where things have come since I read it 6+ months ago. But it made me feel worse. Made me feel less hope for the future - especially the pages about what a Support Worker can offer to help me with, or with what "Goals" would be for me. Really set off feeling depressed and SI from that. I really only feel 1 hope for improving my MH and that is the PAT; and that isn't something a PSW can help me with, or any "goal" can be set for (other than "stay alive"). Just reading all these things that are "meant to help" but haven't helped in the past is really depressing and discouraging.

I'm safe. I'm waiting for the PAT. My conscience says I need to try it.

But I'm still having a lot of other thoughts set off from the reminder that things in the past haven't helped and we don't know what else we can try that might.

I don't feel like tagging anyone, because I don't want people to feel any obligation to respond. But I will, because I know if it were you that posted this, I'd want to be tagged so that I had the opportunity to offer support. But please don't think that by tagging you I expect or obligate you to. It's only because if our roles were reversed I'd want you to tag me because I'd want to support you. But I don't expect/require you to also be able to - I give freely.

Good evening, lovely - I apologise for my delay. @AlwaysMyself 💛

I am so sorry that the Recovery Club form stirred this feeling for you. I think this is a really human response to feeling overwhelmed by goal-setting, especially when you have explored similar strategies in the past and they haven't felt right for you. I can imagine that PAT will open things up for you on a subconscious/nervous system level, and I am excited to hear how this helps you.

That being said, this isn't to say that the Recovery Club program can't help you in the interim. Maybe we just need to reframe your approach? For example, what if your goals are simply about finding connection and purpose between now and PAT?

Also, you are absolutely allowed to share where you're at, your coach will meet you there with kindness and understanding. If your goal is simply to find what feels good in the moment, then that is enough.

Of course, you're also allowed to say, 'this isn't for me' as well.

I am looking forward to hearing about how tomorrow goes - no matter what it looks like. 💛

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@AuntGlow my PSW tomorrow isnt through SANE, its one through my local public health funding for up to 8 1-hour sessions. But i have a copy of the PULSAR booklet that RC/GR use, which i was re-reading. (I havent done RC, but plan to apply when it opens for referrals again). This PSW service is also aimed at "goals", but because it is only short-term it is short-term goals which can be easier to set (e.g. help to keep me motivated on-task of putting away things around the house). But those things wont help my MH long-term. But any help is better than none.

I think RC will be good for the peer-support discussion perspective. Same as the forums are for me.

When i think about goals for "recovery" thats where it is hard. "Staying alive and keeping within the eligibility criteria for PAT" is the goal. It just feels depressing that i cant do anything more than i already am. Because what im doing isnt enough if the PAT doesnt help. And if i dont get the active treatment in the trial, it will be 12 months from now until i can get the real treatment. I dont want to be dragging my feet for another year. 2 months sure, thats not long. The 3 months of the trial i am sure will also go fast. But the 6 months post-trial-treatment until i can do real treatment (if not gotten in trial) - thats the bit that will big hardest i think.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Reassessing which threads/people on the forums you decide to support sounds very wise idea.

@AlwaysMyself you need to put yourself and work out where you need to set boundaries.

supporting beyond limit xyz there becomes a risk of burnout. It is 100% ok to put yourself and your needs first

There is only one of you and only so much one person can do. Know you find supporting others helpful for you and its great you are able to provide that support but theres the other side of the fine line.

youve got your AUSLAN course which is something special and important. I know how much you are looking forward to doing this years course level. It’s ok to concentrate on the course plus do other things you ‘enjoy’ eg coffee and chats with friends. It’s ok to decide to not spend as much time on the forums, if that’s something you need to do.

the important thing to remember

its doing things that work for you and that you want to do. Is ok if that’s something means needing to set new boundaries and new priorities.

I support Aunt Glows post about not saying “no” to the recovery group.

I suggest possibly put all thoughts about Recovery Group aside for awhile (even week or 2). I wondering if you are feeling overwhelmed plus drained atm. You recently mentioned about possibly having done bit too much.

similar to what AuntGlow said, goals can be as simple as commencing the Trial. It’s what you are want to do and looking forward to. Last year I had couple phone calls regarding starting Recovery Group and setting my goals as part of it. Due to not feeling ok about goals being discussed I went no further.

my current therapist believes in working with people to help them set goals. Goals that are already on that list are initial appointment with psychiatrist and meds review.

reading things, dealing with the CF, memories of things things in the past ….. perfect recipe for feeling overwhelmed.

Couple of offers

- I save this thread as a favourite to help decrease concerns about tagging me

- reaching mutual agreement about limiting general chats to once a week

NEVER hesitate to tag me any time if there is something happening and you want/need to post about it. If I can, I will always chat with you

In response to: Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I don't need to decrease chats with you @Flutterbug9 😊, i know its ok to take a while to respond if i'm busy - it doesnt cause me any stress at all. It gives me some connection and friendship.

I dont feel so much "overwhelmed" as "underwhelmed" -- but i guess they both have the same effect lol. I guess "overwhelmed by how little there is for me"?

I guess because I wish there was something i could do to make me want to live. I want to be pro-active. But i also cant manufacture the feelings just because i want to. 😥. But i want to be able to help myself, which i guess is why i go looking at resources that are meant to help me help myself.

The PSW is happy to be flexible about what we do each time we meet -- that is why i was assigned to her specifically. Others are most focused on "doing", not social support. Where as what i need most is social support. But there isnt a program for that within my local MH system. But thankfully the federally-funded Medicare MH have a social peer activity group i can do for 6 weeks whenever it starts -- its not the same as just 1:1 chatting, but maybe i will meet someone i like to keep chatting with outside the group??

My Auslan studies shouldnt take much time to be honest. If i sat down for 2 full days i reckon i would get all the reading and written assessments done for this term. And prob for the other terms it might be 4 full days worth (since half of this term is practical assessment, not written - which is 1 full day). It will be good to have it to do in between other things. Ive just had a lot of appointments lately and this week also.

Normal week is a chiro, a massage, a counsellor, and (for now) a PSW visit. Its really not much when considering the whole week. Everything else is either "I'm home while..." (dog walker, cleaner) or decide-on-the-day (coffee, visits). Otherwise things are adhoc or monthly (dinners x2). I'm mostly trying to keep myself distracted by doing the adhoc things, to prevent mood dippings.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

My offers still stand. None of us know what tomorrow holds.

Im not going down the line of sharing thoughts about things abc fir things to try to maybe help fill in your days etc

1) that’s not me

2) don’t like that side of things

3) only you know what’s options etc to allow for balance

PSW and social interaction sounds good. Not something I’ve heard about before apart from assistance through Aged Care packages @AlwaysMyself

woman opposite me had something where support worker used to come as a ‘visitor’. Another time someone came and they used to go for short walks together.

im someone who believes in giving things a try.

hence my thoughts on the recovery group plus the peer activity group. Out of home, being with others. Can understand you saying about possibly meeting someone that can continue having f2f contact with.

next 2 days temperatures expected to be 30 and over. Another reason I’m looking forward to hair cut tomorrow/today. This week and following 2 weeks I’ve at least one thing happening for majority of each week.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 haircut day!!!!!

And yes, over 30 heat i really notice the difference between when hair is at my shoulder length or has been cut back up to my ears!

Thankfully my area has been "1 day behind" in temperatures, so today is our 25 degree day 😍 and yesterday was also nicely cool here. Tomorrow we also go back to over-30s for 5 days too though 😬😣. But i should be OK in aircon - only my car between places that will likely be too hot.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

No idea how much sense, if any, my post prior to this made. My mistake on few levels.

@AlwaysMyself You mentioned we had exchanged posts on my old profile. Tbh, I don’t remember. I do have memories of chatting and sharing things with small number, things connected to 2 led to me having old profile deleted. Be deliberately not tagging etc those 2 I had hoped that would allow complete break in contact. 1 who was gaslighting worked, the other didnt. Be nice if option was there to block specific people with same impact as on FB. Before you ask, yes I did emails last time, no benefit. It’s a no win. Can’t say person is trolling but …... think you can work out the rest.

haircut today?? Yes 🙂🙂

1 or 2 things first then I’m going to watch some teams playing croquet with hairdresser appointment late morning.

tomorrow I’m rostered in the first game for Wednesday this year, 9am start (leave home about 8:30).

Got down to single figures here last night. Today and tomorrow 30+ prior to few day’s predicted in mid 20’s

thing you said about understanding why your mum stayed plus about way your dad “viewed” your mum and his children, sounds like wasn’t easy for you going up. (If I’ve read things correctly).

Head knowledge and understanding things is definitely mile’s away from having the original memories and the impact of them. I think both are important though and have their own place when relates to trauma. Something though each and every person needs to decide what works best for them

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I knew the the change was due to some unhelpful (shall we say) comments from other users - although i dont know what they said (and its OK for me to not know). I was just glad when you helped me connect the dots of you being the former account, because I missed seeing you around as i'd only just started to get to know you beyond the picture-post threads and your sense of humour which I liked. We'd just started chatting about therapy types and your (now previous!) psych who wasnt living up to their promises/assurances.

@Flutterbug9 🥰

I hope watching the croquet this morning is enjoyable also 😊.

With the hot days it is extra lucky that your game tomorrow will be the first of the day 😁 - the coolest time! 😍

When i got out of bed it was 8 degrees today - i was shocked! Havent seen a single figure in ages either lol. It did help me to decide to have a shower though - to warm up a little, as well as because i have my massage later.

My childhood wasn't "easy", but nothing nearly as hard or bad as what you had to endure in yours. Mine was compounded by my depression; i think if someone without depression had lived with my dad they would have coped much better with it?

I guess for me that there was lots of interacting and compounding issues, plus most likely a genetic/biological predisposition to depression - recipe for a perfect storm perhaps?

On the whole, i think I "coped" quite well -- especially externally. But external "coping" doesnt mean internally healthy (as i suspect you also know from your own experiences?) 😢, it just means self-control and perseverance.

I am safe. But i still *want* to give up. But this is where that self-control and perseverancr come in - I don't let myself give up. I put one foot in front of the other, day by day, even if i don't *want* to.
