Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

@AlwaysMyself Hello lovely how are you?

I want to be here daily. But I’m so unwell I can’t even seem to do that. I wish I could come here and say things are improving. And be a better support for you. I feel like I’m failing at everything here. Your posts are always not only kind but you really understand and make me feel welcome. Like I’m not a waste of your time. That you care. I’ve lost hope that things will improve. Getting through each day is a big battle for me. There’s no joy just panic, doom and exhaustion. The people that know me F2F don’t want to know.

The trial sounds so comprehensive and good. I’m so glad that if you want to continue the treatment that you will be able to do so after the trial ends and with a psychiatrist that already knows you.

The peripheral artery disease would be a barrier for me for trials. 😞

When will you commence peer support? How is your weekend going and your taper.

Im really proud of you. You are really doing so good accessing these supporys and all the hard work you’ve done for the trial.

Hi @Cuddlebear

I just want to let you know that you've been heard here.

What you've shared sounds incredibly heavy, and I'm sorry that you're carrying so much right now. The way you've described each day feeling like panic, doom and exhaustion really stood out - I know that kind of constant intensity can be so draining, and so it makes sense that showing up anywhere can feel hard.

I also want to say that you don't need to be a "better supporter" or be here daily to be valued in the space. You're already so encouraging to other members as you are right now. Please show up when it is best for you. You matter so much💓

Hey @Cuddlebear ,

We are sitting with you.

I'm sorry to hear it is so difficult at the moment. I totally appreciate that there are things that are really not improving at the moment.

However, can you think of something within your control that you can make a little shift with to feel just that inkling better?

For example, does it help when you connect here on the forums with members such as @AlwaysMyself ?

It's also OK to come on and say things aren't getting better yet too @Cuddlebear . *hugs*

I'm glad you know I care and don't at all think you are a waste of time. You are important to me.

You are holding on each time at a time, battling through, surving. That is not failing. You are keeping on with the very basics to keep alive - and sometimes that is "good enough".

What does your GP think is causing your anxiety?

Do they suggest any medications that could help take the edge off when it gets bad?

Has any meditative/mindfullness things been helpful in calming from the distraction at all help?

Does watching a video clip that makes you laugh help break the panic at all?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

@Flutterbug9 chatting with my mum about my dad, his dad, and what i did or did not tell her during my childhood or her notice (nightmares, bullying, eating, etc) helps me understand contexts a bit better which is good. Sometimes my counsellor will ask me if i ever told my mum about xxx and i won't know - i can only assume i did not because i believe my mum would have done something more at the time. But i cant know until i ask my mum if she knew, and generally she did not know (or found out much later after the fact). Understanding what living with my dad was like for her helps, because i understand why she stayed with him but also that she struggled with the same things we also struggle with him on -- just that she was "wife" and we were "children" so some differences due to expectes "roles".

It doesnt usually take me time to process things, i dont think so. But i do notice sometimes that once i am aware of something i keep seeing/making more connections about it over the time afterwards.

How was The Choral?

I think we worked in quite similar areas. Trying to remember if it was you, but i know in the past i had though that there was someone who did very similar industry and professional-area. For example, one of the bits you later removed from the post yesterday(?) about work is the same general professional area that i was in with my most recent job. Although i was more "soft skills" than my coworkers within that area.

I am curious what makes the specific trains "Mexican"? Are they a particular mexican manufacturer of trains? Or a decoration? Or the scenery is set as mexican?

I hope getting out and about feels good for you 😊 and not too tiring (or if it does become a big much, you can modify a little to get the right balance).

I think i spent too much time out of home last week and not enough rest time to just lay down with my eyes closed during the day between things - as ive been very tired the last few days. Still trying to find that balance between not being too idle-mind that my thoughts and mood decline, but not being too active or active-mind that i feel exhausted. Perhaps the additional appointments ive had the past few weeks have also added to it, since im not "fitting more in" to my week. It might just mean im not on the forum quite as much as i have been during most of Jan. But i will find a balance and it will up and down based on what else is going on in life - and remembering that i need to do a bit of Auslan studies too lol (out of sight out of mind haha)

@AlwaysMyself Have read and will reply another day.

regarding wording in my post regarding work related items, edited at my choice!! !
Think best to leave it at that and drop that subject.

I have me reasons for editing the post.
Didn’t realise I needed to explain why I chose to edit my own post

also my own reasons for not providing details about exactly what I did or where I worked.
not going into either.

might not have be intended but feels like getting pushed for info I’m not comfortable providing

Everlast is a brand of crop-tops/leggings that K-Mart sells! @Flutterbug9

But the ones you bought sound perfect for where you're at - I might have to go and have a look too. I really like grey, pink, or black. What colours did you go with?

I used to have a pixie and I loooove having short hair. That will be so pretty! Do you have any inspiration pics? I have a haircut booked for this week too, but will probably go for my go-to French bob.

How fun! Do you find Lego is a sort of mindfulness practice for you?

First year for me, so I have a long way to go! I am studying counselling. 🎉

Aaahhh, that makes sense @AuntGlow

No idea what brand/s are the ones I bought.

not a lot of varieties, couple larger Kmart stores each about 1hr drive from me that I’ll have a look at one day.

i bought white, beige, grey and black crop tops plus one black sports bra. Like to get some more sports bras.

I like building things, one aspect of the Lego buildings/stores. For me, Lego good for mindfulness.

wishing you the best for Uni.

this is the style I like, Feathered Pixie. Similar to style I had in my 20’s
