Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I figure it's better to introduce my challenges here than in a welcome. Hopefully only people willing to hear about SI will venture here.

TW: Suicidal Ideation

Content/trigger warning

I've had thoughts of suicide since I was 12. I don't remember much of life before this time. I'm aware there are times that I haven't though as much about suicide as others, but it's always been a "yes please, that would be my preference" even during the better times.

Why am I still alive then? For two reasons:

- the emotional pain it would cause to very close family.

- the physical pain of accessible methods, and the risks of non-fatal attempts causing lifelong physical impairments.

How do I keep myself going all these years?

By focusing on how I can benefit other people's lives instead. If I'm going to put up with life, it may as well be beneficial to someone.

And to help me keep life less monotonous I look for 'interesting' things - quirky people, exploring foreign countries/cultures, trying new foods (even if i dont think I'll like them). I've never been a status-quo person.

I explain to MH supports that when life is not distressing I can carry on without seriously considering suicide as a possible option. I can say "hello there thought, I hear you but I have chosen not to act on it, things are OK". But when something sets things off kilter, its a pretty quick track back to "why am I still doing this? Do I really still have the same commitment to living? And why, for whom? Why can't I be permitted to die if that's what I want for myself?"

With decades of this under my belt, I have the ability to sit with feelings of extreme distress. And the courage to text or call someone if I need to - and I'm getting a little better at doing this *before* it gets too extreme, but I still hesitate because I don't want to burden others and the frequency of it happening during those unbalanced times is too often. I've persuaded myself a few times recently to instead call a crisis line, but waiting 30-45min in a queue can sometimes exacerbate the thoughts, and sometimes the calls might help dissipate the feelings (if i called early enough) but other times I feel worse after because of course they're going to try to give some positive outlook for the future, but it grates on me because deep down I dont want a future at all. Its actually refreshing when someone acknowledges that not liking/wanting life is OK - and instead just tries to look at how to rebalance the scales to help me cope with continuing to live despite not wanting to.

I'm not sure how un/common my way of thinking is. So much about suicide prevention is focused on short-term distress tolerance or "fixable" problems (eg situations).

What do I need from the community here...?

To be heard? To know if anyone else out there has a long enduring preference to die even when they aren't feeling active distress? And if so, has anything helped them longterm to shift that thinking?

If anyone knows of any practitioners who *specialise* in chronic SI since a young age, I'd really love to know who (if there is a way someone is allowed to??). I've tried Google searching and using online psych directories and reading bio's. I've seen many psychologists and psychiatrists in the past who haven't been able to help me shift this (even if theyve helped in other ways).

I do wonder if my neural networks for positive emotional may not have fully developed or may have atrophied due to the young age and length of time. I genuinely do not know what being happy feels like, I do not have any memory that I recall as being "happy" or joy, and I suspect this makes recovery much harder.

Im ok at the moment. Im safe. But it is exhausting.

Apologies this post is quite a bit too long.

Sounds like you prefer not to mention employer name either. All good. Best not to share some things

stuff with you dad sounds like causes disruptions and upset. How are you feeling by now?

Any thoughts on maybe keeping in contact vs not having contact with your dad?

looking forward to hearing your ‘feelings’ about few questions I asked last night.

apart from the message from your dad, hoping your day went well.

what did you get up to today?

Hello lovely @Flutterbug9,

I am glad you got a good shopping day in, K-Mart is the best!! Did you buy Everlast workout clothes?

Ooh, what Lego have you been building? I still have flower bouquet that my mum got me for Christmas - maybe I will share it when I decided to tackle it. 👀

How was the rest of your week?

And as for me... I start back at uni next week and I miiiight have a creative project underway. Not much else at the moment, but thank you for asking. 💖

Everlasting workout clothes?? Uuuummm, not me @AuntGlow

I recently bought variety of sports bras and crop top styles. More comfortable plus more in line for some visual physical changes I’m in midst of doing.

Hairdresser appointment on Tuesday where I’m hoping to get feathered pixie hair cut. Currently my hair is all one length and sits on my shoulders, is thick with some natural wave

Ive been doing some mini brick cats last couple days. I’ve finished making a small taxi plus Chinese Lions. Haven’t started working on the latest Lego building “shopping street”. Currently have a food van on back order.

what are you studying at Uni? Which year will this year be?

Hello lovely! How are you? @AlwaysMyself

Good on you for exploring the yoga class! It's always interesting trying new things and seeing how our body responds, and it's totally okay for it not to be for you too. For example, I know I will never be a runner. 😂 I can see you chatted to me about yoga in another thread, so I will pop over there soon and answer more there.

Have you explored pilates?

I am glad it was finally set up, I feel like admin for study can be so slow across the board!

How did it go with your ex taking care of the pups? Are they back with you?

Also, how did your spend your weekend in the end?

There was no partying after work the other night hahah, but maybe next weekend? I shall keep you posted. 😝

Re: "Yes, i try to just acknowledge the thoughts and feelings and not buy into them, once i have checked to make sure there is nothing underlying them that i can do anything about or pay note as a trigger to work on later. I suppose posting was my way of doing this, since trying to do it just inside my head wasnt effective first."

I think it's really wonderful that you decided to reach out, because sometimes it's really hard to 'do the work' on our own - we need other humans.

I often have to remind myself to 'drop the story and be with the feeling', and having a witness can allow that to feel safer. 🥰

What kind of games help you to get sleepy/stay engaged when your mind is busy? I used to love Temple Run, it's so simple and easy to get lost in!

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Sorry, my brain didnt properly absorb the questions earlier @Flutterbug9 😅😬.

Where I am is too small to mention things directly/explicitly, but "similar to you, but smaller" I hope makes sense indirectly?

The issue with returning to work will be whether any role would be suitable for the number of hoirs and/or pattern of needing time off. As a knowledge-worker i would usually be working on projects where i would be the expert for my area that is helping someone with their need. However they would often be thinks that take 1-12 months to do, not "short things" that can be picked up "when well" and completed in a single day. I used to spend 30% of my work hours in meetings because i worked 0.6 FTE. If i only worked 0.2 FTE i would probably spend 75% of that time getting team/organisation updates and emails. I'd have no time to actually do the work in any meaningful capacity to progress things. I would need a role to be carved out specifically of things suitable like a "drop-in session" for people to ask me how to do things/advice, etc. Or work on low-priority tasks that dont have a timeframe requirement. But even that is unrealistic because software and workflow is changed so often that i would not be up to date with the changes and new features/builds so i would potentially be outdated in my knowledge very quickly - and the time to stay up to date would be the full work capacity time or more.

Knowing that i don't remember things... mostly it doesn't bother me - in so far as it doesn't affect me in daily life. However where it causes problems is that i don't remember what it is like to be happy or like life. I think knowing that it is almost certainly amnesia from trauma makes me feel sad because it shows that even if i dont remember being upset or such at the time something in my body knew and developed these responses - and i feel sad for anyone who has had to subconsciously protect themselves that way, myself included. But i am also grateful i dont remember it, because i expect there is a lot that would be painful memories if i did remember them and i am ok to not know the negative things. However if this inhibits my ability to understand or connect my emotions to it in order to heal from it, then that is disheartening and sad. But im not sure yet if that is the case. I have found talking to my mum and asking her about what my childhood was like helpful for this sometimes. Sometimes her memories evoke emotion within me when i hear them, and i think that could also be a way to connect the emotions to the right events/scenarios without my brain actually consciously remembering. (Tagging @AuntGlow in case you find that interesting).

I've often been a very pragmatic person, and i think how i feel about my amnesia is quite pragmatic too. Where it evokes hurt is because of the awareness of it being a trauma response, and the grief of a lost childhood is a similar feeling.

Does that make sense at all?

I've been seeing this counsellor for about 5 months i think? I trust her. I feel as comfortable with her talking about my current life state, which has built a lot of trust because of the way she has neither over-reacted nor dismissed. She has been real in how she feels about things that have happened (something that some psychs have been taught never to express how *they* feel about what happened - but i think for trauma, or at least for me, it is validating to also hear other people express similar sentiment or understanding of why you may react a certain way to things).

Sounds like you had very very long hair in younger years! I had long hair, but not THAT long. Did it get knotty a lot?

I remember i had thick hair and it would get soo knotty when i had it long and it would hurt to be brushed. I was nicknamed "cousin it" from the addams family for having a lot of thick long hair.

Its interesting how even subconsciously or without knowing beforehand sometimes that people in families make similar decisions - like the haircuts! I assume it is a nice thought for you that your hair cutting to short at this age is similar to your maternal grandmothers?

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

Not sure when i'll next actively contact my dad @Flutterbug9 , but i won't cut him off. I might just not engage (be absent) unless he directly asks/says something to me (as opposed to general in a group chat - which most messages are).

I spent most of the morning and early afternoon chatting to my mum about my dad and related childhood things. Then decided to go down to where my friends were meeting for coffee. Then hung back there for another few hours afrerwards continuing to do my paint by number, and went home and watched some tv with my mum. Hence why i would check my email to read one or two messages at a time, but not really active on the forum generally today.

Tomorrow i will be busy from 330pm onwards mostly i believe. Hopefully get a good sleep-in in the morning, since i dont have the dogs to get up for.

What did you get up to today? (Saturday) and plans for tomorrow? (Sunday)

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

I haven't ever done pilates @AuntGlow , i guess i don't really know much about it except that there are 2 types? One that looks like yoga to me, and one that uses those reformer machines? Someone said once it can be good for more passive muscle stretching? But i dont know whether or not that is correct because i havent learned about it.

My muscles have some good strength, but they fatigue extremely quickly and also very very tight (and retighten after stretch/massage quicker than normal from what i can tell / massage therapist has said) - which of course makes exercise and stretching more difficult. It can be a vicious cycle of one causing the other causing the other.

To tire my brain it has to be semi-thinking games/activity, but not too much or i will get too focused on it (except if it is purely auditory, in which i can still zone out sometimes lol). It can vary from a word-association solitaire, to word or number puzzles (like a puzzle magazine would have), or visual-logic puzzles like (how to describe?) ones where you need to think about what order you do things in?

Reading books also works because i used to have a routine of reading before sleep, and because my eyes get tired easily when i read without my glasses on. 😅.

But educational audio stories are a staple for me if i am physically tired (eyes tired, arms tired - dont want to use book or phone) but mentally awake. Learning or listening to a story told in the right tone of voice can lull me to sleep well. Othertimes audio podcasts can be a background noise and whilst my brain is off processing totally other thoughts somehow having the podcast in the background makes it easier to fall asleep to my brains processing of different thoughts lol.

But there are also times when the audio will irritate me and prevent me from sleeping and so i turn it off when i start to feel that sleepy irritated.

Lots of tools to choose from based on the nights need! 😋

I might have to look up Temple Run just out of interest. Sometimes it can be nice ti have a simple mindless thing to play while processing thoughts or sitting with feelings.

Re: TW: The 'real' me inside - I come with an SI warning

early 20’s I used to say the name of department I was working for. Following working at few different locations etc I got in the routine as only saying federal government employee, personal choice. Realising I’ve unintentionally used word or 2 in different posts, combined might give hint to where I was working when I retired. @AlwaysMyself

I enjoyed the job, not everything else that went on including micro managing. Small number of staff in head office became aware I enjoyed being part of project teams. Things became that I was only person at my location being asked, that led to animosity from fellow staff. Projects were from few weeks to, at least, 6months. One lasted approximately 18mths.

Trying to find medium between health and work hours. Times I’ve done that were minor compared to what you would be needing to do. 10weeks on leave post surgery with return to work starting at 0.5 full time hrs and gradually increased over 3 mth period was enough. Impact for me was equipment modification, specific desk set ups etc due to physical health.

does your mum have any thoughts of this that she has possibly shared with you?

possibly worth going through those steps with your mum again at some stage?

I fully get and know the feelings of grief due to loss of a childhood. Different situations for us, I fully hear you about the pain.

Everything you have said makes 200% sense. Reading your post my mind was subconsciously thinking back over my past and areas where I have zero recall.

seeing and hearing differences in face and tone when talking with anyone helps me feel heard. My previous therapist was clinical psychologist, clinical fitting her demeanour. Current therapist is a ‘general psychologist’, her face and tone display her feelings. (Fully saw and heard that when in recent chat my SI was mentioned. The smile vanished, entire face showed concern, totally silence for short while, her words conveying concern in her tone). Things some people do without fully realising. Coming from trauma background, I find, it makes huge positive difference.

i always had a special bond with my maternal grandmother. Apparently when I was quite young she used to tell me how, as a girl and young woman, she could sit on the ends of her hair. Something I decided at some stage I wanted to do also.

high school before my hair finally started to grow evenly and to my shoulders. Lots of brushing. My mum used to tell me her mum used to brush her hair 100 times each night, think you can guess who started doing the same.

longer it got the straighter it got. I resorted to plaiting it when my hair was wet/damp.

planned hairstyle change - does it form a sense of a renewed bond to my maternal grandmother, sure does 🙂

death of my maternal grandmother was 3rd time prior to turning 14 that I’d had my heart broken

How are you feeling today following having the chat/s with your mum yesterday? @AlwaysMyself

Are you someone whose mind takes few days to processes things?

yesterday morning I didn’t achieve much which left me with type of lost feeling in the afternoon ie unsettled physically and mentally.
really should focus on making my bed today after fully stripping it yesterday. I’ve set alarms in my phone for this afternoon, cinema here playing movie The Choral

(going to the cinema part of casual challenge my therapist set me during our most recent appointment)

if I can keep it going, croquet once a week, Mexican Trains once a week, trivia once a month. Want to investigate Drumming exercise a possible which would be once a week. Activities on 2 days a week, GP once each 3mths, therapist and psychiatrist no idea at this stage plus groceries. It’s a start. Pain management Dr wants me to get out walking plus attend appointments with physio / build up strength in core muscles.

Wondered if you might have missed the questions hence my comment. All good. Easy to forget or miss things. 🤗💜
