Talking through trauma and PTSD

wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

i have trauma from healthcare services

i trust not a single soul, besides for my GP

people are pushing me into public care, public care is pushing me into private, and and everyone claims the NDIS can do everything

NDIS is full of strange workers - luckily i found a nice and intelligent one

I have tried case management, Spectrum, and seeing a private psych

I don't have BPD but as soon as I mention Spectrum I'm told stock phrases like "you have to stick it out" and "you're in good hands" and offered BPD coping skills

it doesn't seem to matter what my diagnosis is - people seem to want to solve things and push me away rather than hear the reality of what i experience and know.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@Eden1919 thats horrible and personally i really don't like DBT - but you even tried it and gave it a go - and i believe you that they discounted the psych!

I sent them 4 letters saying I had trauma [edited by moderator in alignment with community guidelines] - doesn't matter. I guess they know better?
I don't know why they do that to people, just try shut them down.

I find the BPD diagnosis when used against someone, as a weapon, a really dangerous thing. Personality disorders have morphed into something they're not - and now just seem to exist as some way to target and silence people who need help

I identify as having a personality disorder, but I dont know that I see it like they do.
I feel unsafe everywhere, i feel like people think i make up things for attention

It has been a long time since anyone treated me like a human being or a smart one.
I don't even know how to cope

Hey @EternalFlower

That’s really strange that she couldn’t use the lift. It sounds really stressful especially with the limited time. She shouldn’t be taking personal calls on the job. It’s sounds frustrating trying to find someone that can support you. I hope your GP is able to provide you with what you need.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@EternalFlower It can be hard to cope when we already have trauma and then start getting treated terribly by the very people who are supposed to help us so I can understand why you might be feeling frustrated and hopeless with the whole situation. Have you asked for a second opinion at the hospital because you are always entitled to a second opinion from different doctors? Still that can be complicated and isn’t a guarantee that they will listen to you.

hi @Eden1919 i can't get away from my own psych at the hospital - he's my consultant and he's not helpful. I could try ask for a second opinion but I wander if they'll deliberately give me soeone who will agree with him. I don't trust.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@EternalFlower Oh how frustrating you must feel very trapped. I guess you just have to keep trying is there any testing you can request to prove that you don’t have the diagnosis they are trying to force on you? I remember I did one test that was very comprehensive and they kept making me do it because it kept coming back that I didn’t have BPD and that is what they wanted to diagnose me with lol anyway maybe a test like that would be useful evidence if only I could remember the name of the test. It was something like the PAI or something like that I think not sure anyway I hope you can find a way to make some progress against these terrible doctors.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

hi @Eden1919 i submitted a complaint with the MHWC asking them to ask the hospital for evidence of my diagnosis

They are sending this query to the hospital

Will it help? i do not know

  • you expressed concerns regarding your diagnosis including:
  • you never received a verbal explanation to your diagnosis
  • you are uncertain about the origin of the borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis, as it was never discussed with you
  • you obtained this information through the Freedom of Information (FOI) process and disagree with the diagnosis
  • you remain unaware of how or when the assessment was conducted and would like to understand the assessment process and the timeline in which it took place

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

the fact is, no assessment ever took place @Appleblossom @Eden1919 @Justhere @Lapis_Anteater

so i guess they can't say when it took place because i've never been diagnosed with BPD by a Dr.

So what will they say?

They do this all the time, just make things up. And what happens when we speak up about it? will someone stand and say, actually, this patient doesn't have BPD, and no diagnosis of such, so we must not assume that just because we don't like her - OR

will they just pretend that it is a mistake. How do they react when being called out? I am very much wandering what will happen.

I have asked for proof that I have a dx of BPD

I have asked the MHWC to seek proof. I know there is no proof. As I was never diagnosed with it.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@EternalFlower

I have a lot of trauma from health services, mostly witnessing what has happened to loved ones. I no longer have real trust, but make do when I have to.

wishing you a good outcome. I worry they can just say, you tick the boxes. Good luck with it.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@Appleblossom i understand . complaints rarely go anywhere

MHWC sent this to the hospital:

you have a wellness plan that outlines your preferences for how you would like to be treated during times of distress. The plan includes specific requests, such as not being touched, avoiding pet names, and overnight admission to the hospital during a crisis. The plan is occasionally followed; its application is inconsistent

----

(they could say they don't have beds etc).

Re saying i meet the criteria - thats true, but a psychiatrist would have to access it, not a social worker or psych nurse, i would imagine. But you're right - they could say its typical BPD behaviour -

although their role was never to "access" - (this is being sent to the ED) and those who have assessed me - my case manager, my psychiatrist, Spectrum, my treating team, told me i have a different diagnoses. The ED has given me FOUR personality disorders, yet i have never seen a dr there.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@Appleblossom i wander if it will get me anywhere lol. I have had to go to a different ED, because I hate the way they treat me there

I got my notes via FOI and BPD is all over it.

Sometimes they don't even use my name

It just calls me a "BPD in crises."
Like BPD is the noun.

I can't imagine doing that with another diagnoses. Highly offensive.
