Talking through trauma and PTSD

wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

i have trauma from healthcare services

i trust not a single soul, besides for my GP

people are pushing me into public care, public care is pushing me into private, and and everyone claims the NDIS can do everything

NDIS is full of strange workers - luckily i found a nice and intelligent one

I have tried case management, Spectrum, and seeing a private psych

I don't have BPD but as soon as I mention Spectrum I'm told stock phrases like "you have to stick it out" and "you're in good hands" and offered BPD coping skills

it doesn't seem to matter what my diagnosis is - people seem to want to solve things and push me away rather than hear the reality of what i experience and know.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

My advice is to ditch the focus on the misdiagnosis and to focus on getting well. What that looks like depends on what your difficulties are, and as you have a severe permanent disability, creating a meaningful life will involve negotiating limitations. It's up to you what your life with a disability looks like, but you can be "well" and thrive.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@EternalFlower That makes sense yeah I can totally understand where you are coming from and being misdiagnosed creates its own kind of trauma that you then have to work through which sucks because it is avoidable if professionals just take the time to do proper investigation into what is going on with people. I think as well being misdiagnosed with BPD especially is awful because of the awful stigma it carries and form then on any time you try and argue the diagnosis you are seen as being defiant and therefore even more proof you are BPD it really is a horrible cycle and everything becomes your fault and they see you as an attention seeker and it just ugh no one should be treated like that people who actually have BPD included. Hopefully you can work through this and get the treatment you actually need and deserve and hopefully the people who are not listening start listening soon.

Hi @AuntJobiska im in public system and have been in tbe ED about 20 times where Ive been encouraged to just go home and self harm because I have bpd so why not just lean into it.

I find your advice overly clinical rather than peer support and understanding and it feels quite direct advice as well. It doesn't feel good and I don't like being spoken to that way. Thanks.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

Hi @AuntJobiska im sorry im not engaging in discussions about if it is a misdiagnosis. Thanks for sharing your view point in private treatment. Please note spectrum is public care and I am discussing a misdiagnosis in public ed after repeat visits.

Having a public diagnosis is different to private. And having public care is crucial to go to Spectrum.

I feel I do not want to discuss my situation in more detail with you as I find your response judgemental and uncaring.

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

Hi @EternalFlower & @AuntJobiska,

I'm sorry to hear that some of the responses have upset you. Sometimes communication on an online platform can be misunderstood or misinterpreted - typed words don't always capture our tones and intentions as accurately as spoken words to at times.

Please be mindful of assumptions made and providing 'prescriptive' advice. I know I've accidentally assumed things about others before, and I've had others assume things about me. I know it can be upsetting to experience, and I also know that we're all humans and we make errors. I'm glad we can speak about these errors and work on ways to improve things. When sharing, it can be helpful to focus on what's worked for you rather than 'advising' someone to try things.

It's completely fine if you don't wish to discuss certain things with certain members, placing those boundaries can be helpful. Please also be mindful of our 'being friendly at all times' and 'tell the community what you need' guidelines - perhaps sharing what type of support you'd like from the community (e.g. you can say you don't want advice but you'd like to vent) can help you receive the support you're looking for.

Hi @holdinghope5 i find your response victim blaming and shaming

If i don't get the response needed i doubt its bexause I didn't properly tag my post. I set a boundary and use polite and clear language requesting a certain topic be no longer discussed with one user.

If the user approaches me with direct advice that's not because I have an issue.

I truly don't like the way this was managed.

I wish u well and truly hope you are okay in your journey. Im okay with what I posted and how I posted it and believe clarity was needed to protect my peace.

Hi @Eden1919 totally agree and noticed that as well

Because bpd has certain stereotypes it is harder to argue back because its assumed its something else

Really difficult to be seen as a human being and that diagnosis comes with trauma generally which somehow they overlook

Thanks for coming to share ur experience

Bpd isn't the problem its the way ppl use it to block people from help in the public system

System can fail complex users

Re: wandering the next steps after misdiagnosis and feeling unsafe in healthcare settings

@holdinghope5 im so sorry but I find your reaponse a little hard to understand as u tagged both myself and the other user. Perhaps if u feel ive broken a boundary u could reach out privately

I am happy to change a word or two to comply better with rules but my sentiment is pretty clear and I do feel direct medical advice and judgements have no place here.
