How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Hi @Appleblossom you're so lucky you had friends to play with and nice they were italian. I had no friends, was never allowed to go to any birthday parties or have no one come to my house to play. It felt very lonely.

So Christmas day was a beautiful day filled with love, laughing and eating the most amazing food. From lasagna, turkey, ham, salads to amazing tiramisu, cream horns and fresh fruit platter. we have so much left over for today. My daughter and younger son left in the afternoon to go to their partners parents house. My middle son stayed the night. this morning we all went to local cafe and had coffee and cheese toastie.

now home, son watching cricket and i am relaxing while feeling a little sad. hubby outside in the garage.

and all the tourists are heading down here, you can see the freeway startring to get busy with cars bumper to bumper!!

i hope your day is nice day @Appleblossom with your son.

i got a nice gift from my KK - a digital photo frame and a hair dryer. everyone was happy with their gifts. little A was very excited she was spoilt as usual. Santa brought her a pink guitar, she is in love with it. She brought it to our house, wearing a dress and white cowboy boots holding her guitar. she looked like a little musician. she loves writing songs about anything and has a book. she now wants guitar lessons.

hi to everyone @AuntGlow @Shaz51 @Jynx @tyme

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

hi @Appleblossom @Shaz51 @AuntGlow @Jynx @tyme and others i have missed

sorry i have been quiet on here since Christmas. On Tuesday 29th I saw my dr for abdo pain (upper middle abdo and under my right ribs) he sent me for an xray. He called the next day and said i would like you to go to ED to have a scan done, as the xray showed possible small bowel obstruction. I went to my local ED which is only 5 mins down the road but it is a small hospital and in summer overloaded by the tourists. Got taken to short stay bypassing ED by a lovely dr. Had a CT scan and a few hours later she came to tell me that the scan didn't show anything. But as i was still in pain so she decided to keep me in overnight. So i spent NYE in hospital; ended up in tears as i had plans for our daughter to come over. In the morning the lovely female dr left and this new dr comes in to see me. He says "no you don't have an obstruction; i think you definitely have gallstones". you need an ultrasound. So because it was new years day there were no technicians for the ultrasound which i thought was so stupid. anyway they had to organise transport to take me to another bigger hospital to do the ultrasound. 35 min drive and they put me in straight away as they were waiting for me. had ultrasound - no stones!! so much for that dr thinking he definitely knew. They discharged me with the plan to see my gastroenterologist. But he is away until today.

Friday was my D birthday and we had a nice dinner out; i wasn't feeling 100% but i went and ate very little as i still had pain.

Sunday 4/1 i started getting pain radiating from the top of my abdo to the lower right side. so i started to panic thinking it could be appendicitis. So off i went back to my local ED and the dr i saw said 'there is nothing we can do here as you have had all the tests, but i will call your gastroenterologist. as he was away on leave he wasn't answering calls understandbly so she says to me 'we have another dr who is looking after your specialists patients we will transfer you to a private hospital. so they organised transport and i go to the private hospital which is only 20 mins away arriving at 10pm.

I was put in my room, nurse organised meds and staff were lovely.

No dr came as it was late. All day yesterday i waited and waited still in pain for a dr to come and see me. the nurses were great. Finally at 6.30pm this dr comes in. Now all this time i had assumed that the dr would be a gastroenterologist. But oh no, this dr was a general physician. he was rude and said to me 'i don't know why you are in pain' have no idea. I mentioned that maybe i need a gastroscope with my specialist when he's back. he's reply was 'oh i dont think that will find anything either' and walks out.

At this point i went from a quiet patient to an extremely angry, teary and i had a huge meltdown. i called the nurse and told her i am going home. she asked why and i told her that this dr said there was nothing he could do; didn't know why i was in pain. i was crying so much that i struggled to talk. she went off and told the dr which he was just outside my room and i heard him say 'oh well if she wants to go she can'. he never came back in to validate me or even try to console me or even try to explain things better. he walked past my room 3 times and never once came in. with 5 mins i had my bags packed, changed my clothes and called hubby. I felt so alone, not validated and feared that no one was believing me. it was horrible.

this morning i went to see my psychiatrist and told her the whole drama and she said that wasn't good enough. that a lot of drs don't have good bedside manner. she could see i was still very upset talking about it.

I did email my gastroenterologist yesterday and his receptionist called this morning saying he saw my email and wants to see me on Thursday this week. I will tell him everything and also how i felt. It has truly left me thinking that i will not go to a hospital again. i will suffer with pain for the fear of not believed.

it's been a nightmare. i am still in a bit of pain, it has subsided but clearly something needs to be done. it's going on too long.

sorry for long post. xxx

i am now paranoid that becuse i have mental illness that these drs must think 'oh no she is making this up. but i know what pain feels like it is real.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

Oh @BlueBay hun that is so rough. Persistent pain with no discernible source like that can be incredibly scary, and not being shown empathy and care in this is truly awful, and it's no surprise to me that it's making you feel this way. When stuff like this has happened to me, it's been difficult sometimes to remind myself that when the tests are coming up negative, it's a good thing. But I know that the frustration of not knowing and the fear of something getting missed are all too real.

Do you know when you'll be able to see your gastroenterologist? What are you doing to look after yourself in the meantime?

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

thanks sis lovely @Shaz51 xxx

hey @Jynx i am seeing my gastroenterologist this coming thursday. i am hoping he will do a gastroscope.

Yeah i am trying to say to myself that even though they haven't found anything - that's a good thing!! But my negative head is going crazy, fearing the worse. But i know that if there was something serious it would have been picked up by now with all the tests I have had.

I am going to take it easy and not push myself too much. Once i see my specialist i will know more and hopefully he will give me some advice. he is great, caring and he knows of my mental health.

it's so frustrating and it doesn't help when i catastrophise things and start to get paranoid about what the hospital thinks of me discharging myself.

Re: How to challenge your negative thoughts

@BlueBay I hope the pain is at least somewhat manageable until then hun 🤞

Yes it can be so easy to jump to that catastrophising kind of mind set, especially when there's just a bunch of ??? hovering over us and we don't have insight or clarity on what's causing the pain. I do think it's unlikely that anyone will judge you for discharging yourself - if they'd been truly concerned they would probably have tried to stop you. Plus, as cold and heartless as it sounds, to them it's another free bed.

I think this is definitely key!! One foot in front of the other, and I think for me when it's a waiting-game-plus-anxiety, distractions can serve very well.

Has hubby been able to look after you some?

Sending you hugs!
