How to challenge your negative thoughts

How to challenge your negative thoughts

Hi @Shaz51 @Emelia8 @Eve7 @rav3n @tyme and others reading along -

I have been diagnosed with BPD, cPTSD, depression, anxiety, eating disorder. I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

I saw my dr today and he has suggested that i try to 'challenge my thoughts'. I am at the moment on a huge downer with my depression - no motivation, no interest in much, can't be bothered, angry with myself etc etc etc and my negative thoughts are instant. Once these negative thoughts are with me I 'go with it' and it 'drags me into a spiral of negative self thoughts' (hope this makes sense!!)

my question is - how on earth do i challenge my negative thoughts?? That's not something i do myself because i get so absorbed by my own thoughts. It never occurs to me that i need to stop and challenge it.

If i am with my dr or psychiatrist and they point it out - then after a little while with them i can see it but don't believe it. (this is not making sense???)

i am struggling at the moment and don't know how to write this to you all

i get angry with my dr because he has no idea how hard it is to challenge those very strong negative thoughts

a lot of those thoughts have been ingrained in me since a child and a lot of them i believe to be true; the exact truth

Hi @Appleblossom

I’ve been in hospital ED with very high blood pressure. Over 200!!

had ECG and blood tests. Stayed for 8 hours then results came back all good. Except blood pressure still very high - they discharged me.

they wouldn’t change my meds and said I need to see my own dr.
Ive got an appt tomorrow morning.

thanks my lovely sis @Shaz51 xxx

i am resting inside where it's cool. taking it easy today. have a slight headache but i am making sure i am drinking lots of water. early night I think as i am tired. you never sleep properly in hospital.

i do have some meds from my psych that i can take to help alleviate my high anxiety which i will take after dinner.

My pleasure! @BlueBay 🫶

Oh wow, it's so unfair that our value is defined by how much we can contribute to the capitalist grind... I am so sorry this happened and I am glad you won your case.

How has work been for you this week?

Also I understand why fears might be resurfacing after what happened at Bondi. I can hear there's a lot coming up for you with nightmares and Christmas as well.

What might help you to come 'back to you' over the next couple of weeks? 🫶

Hi @AuntGlow

I’m not too good. I have just checked my BP and it’s higher than last night when I was in hospital.
I struggle so much with health anxiety. But the more I worry the higher my BP goes.

I think I need to take just one day at a time. All I can focus on. I know Christmas will be a beautiful day with my own family. Yes I will be emotional thinking of my dad but I’m stuck. It hurts a lot. Maybe this is why I’m getting palpitations and high BP. It’s like grief. I’m grieving for the loss of seeing my dad; the loss of my childhood thanks to the abusers. I’ve lost a lot and it hurts. My heart aches so much.

work on Monday was very busy and my back was sore. I had to work 8.30-5.30

Oh I completely get that! @BlueBay

That sounds really tough. 😔

One day at a time is a really helpful approach. I am excited to hear more about your Christmas, I am sure it will be such a lovely day for you. 🫶

On the other hand, I can hear it will be vulnerable as well, which makes so much sense. Not being with dad will be hard.

What might help you to get through Christmas? Can you think of an anchor or something that might help you to ground?

Gah, standing with a sore back is so uncomfortable... 😣 When is your next shift?

Aww @BlueBay I'm sorry it's been so intense and overwhelming. I think communities like ours are especially impacted in times like this. I hope you're able to find some ways to show yourself some gentle kindness - especially as I know this time of year is very difficult for you. Many hugs 💜
