Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@Ru-bee helplines can help a bit, it can be dependent on who you get.

I think I’m so used to getting my SI under control using PRN, this time around that hasn’t worked. I haven’t dealt with this persistent intensity for a long time. Last time this happened was years ago.

I am finding myself thinking of an excuse to come up with so I can get access to the substance that has helped me with cope the thoughts in the past. I know it’s not meant to be used for mental health, but I can’t think of another way to cope. I can’t get relief from PRN. It’s more important to survive the next 10 days

hey @creative_writer just catching up on how things have been for you today.

just to clarify - was it your psychologist that you have limited sessions with (and the one you'll be seeing next week)?

are you still able to reach out to your psychiatrist soon? or are your psychiatrist sessions also limited?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n I have limited sessions with the psychologist. It’s not limited with the psychiatrist, all sessions are covered by Medicare as long as the referral is valid. I did try to get a sooner psychiatrist appointment. I have one next week on Friday. It still feels like forever till the appointment. I know I’m lucky it’s not a longer wait, but it is hard in a midst of a crisis

oh yep, that makes sense - thanks for clarifying that for me @creative_writer. do you reckon it would be possible to request an earlier session with your psychiatrist, especially with how overwhelmed you've been feeling?

@rav3n I called up after seeing your post, it did occur to me I could try calling again because cancellations do happen. He had availability tomorrow morning. I have a workforce Australia activity obligation thing tomorrow, but I don’t think they’ll mind me being gone for a 30 min Telehealth appointment

I’ve been able to feel a bit better through a shower and prayers, anxiety is starting to pick up again. I just need to get through tonight

Hello @creative_writer,

I am glad to see a shower and some prayers have helped. That really does sound so grounding for you.

If you put a hand on your heart and another on your stomach, then take a few deep breaths, what do you notice this anxious feeling is trying to tell you? 🩷

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@AuntGlow my thoughts are racing. It all feels loud, it’s hard to describe. Too much clutter leaves me feeling super stressed. Makes it hard to function

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@AuntGlow I’ve given it some thoughts while I was in the toilet. The weird toilet and shower thoughts 😂. The thoughts are around what I need to get done, and criticisms for what I didn’t get done. I feel constantly lazy and stupid. I also get lots of intrusive thoughts e.g., suicide, self harm, and intrusive trauma thoughts. My mind is a mess but I am safe rn, I’ve gone one day without SH, hasn’t been easy

Re: Functioning with ADHD

I totally understand loud thoughts making it hard to function @creative_writer.

Honestly though, toilet and shower musings are always the best.

It seems like there's a lot of internal and external pressure around achieving or being productive? No wonder you're feeling so stressed! You're not lazy or stupid, but I understand why you might be thinking you are - this is very common in those who experience ADHD. But to me, it sounds like you're needing something more to feel more supported and regulated whilst trying to achieve all that you have to do - do you know what that might be?

I am glad to know you are safe tonight. 💕
