Functioning with ADHD

Functioning with ADHD

How do people function while living with ADHD? I’m pretty much non-functional, it’s taking a toil on my mental health, I’m stuck in constant rumination. I try to look for a reasonable solution, but I see the unreasonable

hey @creative_writer i see that you're having a rough time, i really wish there was more i could do to help make those intrusive thoughts quieten down. i know you're doing your best with staying safe and keeping up with your self-care, sending you gentle hugs 💖

are you seeing your psych soon? have you talked to her about how intense the SI has been lately?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n I don’t have my next appointment with my psych till next month, I’m running out of sessions and have only two left. I was saving the two for later this year. I have a psychiatrist appointment in just over two weeks, moving it forward is tricky as he does get booked out. My psychiatrist appointment was also initially in a month’s time, but was able to move it a bit forward. I think it would be great to get some support, I just have to wait

@creative_writer oh nooo that's tough when you've only got the 2 sessions left! is paying full price for extra sessions an option for you? i do get that it can be really expensive too.

also wanted to ask, are you under 25? if you are interested, headspace does free 1-on-1 clinician sessions too for 12-25 yr olds, and i wonder if it would be worth reaching out to them in between your psych sessions?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n it is expensive, especially since my private health insurance doesn’t cover it, I would have to increase my cover to get it covered.

I’m 25+ now, I know SANE also has a guided service, but I’ll need to wait until end of November to qualify for it. I wish therapy wasn’t so expensive, it’s harder when unemployed

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n I might be able to get free peer support sessions through a different service. I have to contact them

Re: Functioning with ADHD

ahh yep, absolutely hear you - it's tough rationing out the remaining sessions @creative_writer if you do end up trying that other peer support service, i'd be keen to know how it goes! is it a 1:1 peer support, a group one?

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@creative_writer and about the SANE guided service, i'm curious to know why you'd have to wait till nov? (i assumed that as long as you're 18+ and living in Aus, you'd be eligible so i just wanted to check if i've missed something)

Re: Functioning with ADHD

@rav3n I checked, the individual peer support isn’t available in my region 😔.

I used the guided service last year, my last appointment was on the 25th of November, I’ve been told I have to wait a year til I can rejoin. I would love to get more sessions, but I think I have to wait. I am currently with the 6 month RecoveryClub (so I do attend the group support sessions)

Re: Functioning with ADHD

Hello @creative_writer, thank you for sharing all of this with us. What I am hearing is that you've been through a lot of painful experiences and that you've been unable to safely express the feelings that have come up as a result, which has left you feeling confused and overwhelmed. I can see how much your brain wants answers and your body needs peace, both of which you undoubtedly deserve. I really do believe you are well on your way to healing, I can see it whenever you are able to regulate and challenge your thoughts. But it is a process, and you're allowed to be emotional as you learn and grow. I also think it's so important that you feel safe enough to be transparent with your supports (it honestly helps so much!).

I am sure the prospect of your rebated sessions ending soon is overwhelming... will you continue to see your psych if you can and grow that relationship in order to build more trust?

Also, what else could you lean on other than therapy? 💛
