Mother's Day (TW)

Mother's Day (TW)

So Mother's Day is on Sunday and if you're anything like me, it's a day you typically dread.

Whether you're a mother yourself or you want to be a mum or your mum just wasn't great, it's a hard day isn't it?

You see all the beautiful gifts for mums in stores and it's hard, it's a day where you can and probably do, really miss your mum.

I'm a mother, my children are not on this earth, but I'm no less a mother.

I can't be a part of my mother's life because it would put me in danger. But every mother's Day and special event I go to a public phone box and send her a message telling her that I love her and I'm ok.

5 years ago I wrote this

I am different in that I embrace my inner child and she is very much a conscious entity in me, and well she surprised me today. She made me pancakes and even bought me a present, and no I'm not crazy, she is the part of me that got neglected as a child, she never got to be that and she sees me as her mum, which is the sweetest thing and I love her like I do each of my angels in heaven.

I am generally a grieving mess on mothers day, but it's something different today, she made me feel like a mum and I love her all the more for it.

I think she has started a new tradition today, and I think it might just be a healthy tradition.

That the world may forget you or not count you as a mother, because you may not have actually have a child on this earth, but I now believe we deserve to be celebrated too.

So yes, make yourself a nice breakfast like your kids would and get yourself a present, ask yourself 'what would they get me, something I wouldn't get myself' and take care of you!

You are no less a mother. The world may forget you, but don't forget yourself.

This tradition I am glad to say has carried on, even when I was homeless, to love myself as they would have loved me.

Yes I miss my mum on mother's Day and throughout the year, but do something she would have enjoyed and remember her in that moment, in the moments that she behaved like a mother.

Make space for her memory and make space for your grief.

Re: Mother's Day (TW)

Oh yes, slightly different @avant-garde , but I had someone ask me just a couple of days ago “Is your husband coming with you” - No because I’ve never had one, plus I could have a wife. I don’t like it when people presume. A better thing to say is “is anybody coming with you” even then it presumes there needs to be two people always.

Many people no longer have living mothers, fathers, children or partners, or they may be estranged, so don’t presume. I will be raising funds for cancer on Mother’s Day this year, as will many others, but some of us won’t be seeing any family after that.

@Till23

I hear you, I wear a fidget ring on my marriage finger so that guys don't assume I'm up for grabs (both figuratively and literally in some cases).

I'll be sorting out my tiny unit with the tv on to keep me busy between church services then get my happy meal after both are done.

I think a cancer run on mother's Day is a great idea, they should do a prostate one on father's Day.

Re: Mother's Day (TW)

@avant-garde these are other women asking, or sometimes guys but just in a conversational way.
You seem to keep yourself pretty busy, which is good. Is a happy meal a weekend treat.

They do have some prostate cancer walks/runs I don’t think it’s on Father’s Day though

@Till23

Thank you for the clarification.

I get happy meals when I have rough days, it makes my inner child happy and I like seeing her happy. I also get to draw on the happy meal box and make @tyme smile.

I tend to not eat when I'm sad so it's a way to make sure I do.

Mothers Day for me comes with mixed emotions. I struggle to find enjoyment in it. I also find it exhausting to pretend that it is a great day.

I love that I can call myself a mother to my 2 beautiful children. They are the reason I keep going.

However, it is also a very triggering day for me too. It is very hard to please my mum, anxiety about choosing the right present, being estranged from family, CSA anniversary.

I also believe that their are many ways to be a mother. They come in many different shapes and sizes.

Oh @Snowie

@avant-garde @Till23

Love the gender and health respectful conversation… it can be so hard in this divided world…. To take one side and offend another. How did we come to this? It doesn’t feel like progress. But thank you all on this thread for trying.

Snowie

I am so triggered at the moment about many aspects of mother’s day. Your broad, beautiful images of many types of mothers was a relief and really starts to address the complexity… in a world overly saturated with short phrases, memes… to get attention.

Thanks for sharing @Snowie. I can hear that the day brings alot of mixed emotions for you.

I do hope the day goes ok for you, remember to be kind and gentle towards yourself. Sending you hugs ❤️

Re: Mother's Day (TW)

definitely agree with you @Appleblossom it's lovely that we can acknowledge those who often feel invisible or unheard on Mother's day, there's always space for them here 💞

@MissGremlin hearing that it's a mixed bag of emotions for you too, hope you're gentle towards yourself too 💗

Re: Mother's Day (TW)

sending so much gentle love and comfort to everyone here struggling with this weekend 💗 I’m sorry this is so hard for so many of us for so many different reasons

personally I tend to feel quite a lot of guilt when this day comes around, my mum hasn’t always been perfect and we definitely have our history but she’s done her best to protect us from the trauma my father put both of us through. I tend to feel so much pressure and guilt around not being able to financially afford to give her more most of the time, she’s one of those people who constantly says you don’t have to get her anything.
I’m finding this year’s mothers day particularly triggering, heavy, and difficult, as it’s the first one since we’ve escaped dad’s abuse for good, and I am also dealing with a breakup between my partner and I of five years.
for the very first time in my life I had started writing out baby names less than a week before he dumped me. when I was younger up until my early twenties I was one of those people who quite staunchly swore off of ever having kids but gradually my mind changed more and more as I got older. he was the first ever person I felt truly comfortable with the idea of being a father to the children I’d like to have one day. this weekend I am in mourning of that and I’m not sure how long it’s gonna take to even get through all of what’s been going on honestly.

mum said all she wants tomorrow is seafood and a day off to relax, so I’m organising to give her that, however I’m anxious about my current emotional and mental state getting in the way of that. I really hope not.
