Talking through trauma and PTSD

Tillogram

Tillogram

I am wondering if anyone has any strategies that have helped them to banish the “Not Good Enough” thoughts.

It is apparently a common problem for those with childhood trauma (likely other things as well).

I think I try pretty hard to surmount this feeling. I have completed university degrees, I have worked pretty much continuously from age 14yo. I try to participate in sport and different other activities. I volunteer.

Maybe “doing things” is not the correct strategy (although it does act as a distraction).

I still think I am not good enough.

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @tyme just a temporary muscle soreness in back. It will recover quickly. I have arthritis in my back so I'll still have that, but it's not too worrying. The problems of getting older.

I have finished the main part of the work now.

It will be sad for us when you go away, but it will be good for you I am sure is it for worl or just fun

Re: Not Good Enough

Arghhh... I have arthritis in my back and feet and I'm not even 40 yet! (Nearly 40). @Shaz51 @Till23

It makes exercising really tough. But now that I've pushed through the pain, and walking/swimming regularly, I have had terrible back pain in a while which is good.

Yes, I'm going to miss everyone. Usually, when I'm on leave, I still like to check in to the forums to see what's been happening, but I'm going overseas this time, and with our geoblocker, you can't access the forums from overseas.

But let's see how good this blocker is. If I see you, I'll defo say hi.

When I get back, I'll tell people where I went and how it went 🙂

Re: Not Good Enough

Yes it's interesting @Shaz51 how even though it's just online you seem to connect with some people really well. There are a few people on here including @tyme and you, @Shaz51 that I feel connection with

Nearly everyone will have some arthritis in their spine by 50, I had a little bit by 40, but not too bad.

Don't worry @tyme you've gor another couple of decades before you're old 🤣, but regular exercise is the best thing for it

Re: Not Good Enough

Water exercise is pretty much good for everything @Shaz51 I have looked into aquarobics, but so far have not had time, or maybe just have made a proper effort, to start going. I am not a strong swimmer, although I can, I probably should get into it now I've retired

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @AuntGlow I have a thread over here.

I posted a little but about being in a slump in Best Friend's Club.

I try to do things to help my MH. Today though I felt I couldn't get out of bed

Re: Not Good Enough

Thank you so much for sharing this with me @Till23. 💛

It's okay to find things hard at times... especially if bigger emotions and challenges are present. You know, I have found recently that when I fully surrender to not being able to do something (instead of resisting it with the 'I should be doing x, y, z' and other not-so-kind head talk), that it shifts a little easier. It's interesting how being compassionate and giving ourselves permission to be where we are at can be helpful. Have you ever found this to be the case for you?

Also, I would love to know what kinds of things you do to help with your mental health! 😊

Re: Not Good Enough

Hi @AuntGlow I have coped through my whole life since CSA by keeping busy.

Studying, working, sometimes sport/some other leisure pursuit.

I've never used alcohol or other substance.

I've either studied full-time, worked full-time, or worked full-time and studied part-time. I've studied a lot. I have multiple degrees and certficates/diplomas.

I retired at very end of last year. I have been struggling much more with MH since I had cancer treatment in 2022 and again in 2023, when I was also diagnosed with another disease, I cared for my father until he passed away from cancer in 2024. One of my dog's died in 2023 and I will put my other dog down this friday due to old age/multiple medical problems. .

Retirement has been hard, because I feel I've lost a big distraction, plus my purpose in life. I don't have a partner or children.

Since retiring I have increased my sport training. I took on some short-term casual work that I just finished.

I also play table tennis once/week. I volunteer once a week. I do gardening in my garden and the usual house stuff. I have a psych (once per fortnight), but soon will not be able to afford, due to MHCP running out.

Sorry that turned out to be an essay!
