Talking through trauma and PTSD

Tillogram

Tillogram

I am wondering if anyone has any strategies that have helped them to banish the “Not Good Enough” thoughts.

It is apparently a common problem for those with childhood trauma (likely other things as well).

I think I try pretty hard to surmount this feeling. I have completed university degrees, I have worked pretty much continuously from age 14yo. I try to participate in sport and different other activities. I volunteer.

Maybe “doing things” is not the correct strategy (although it does act as a distraction).

I still think I am not good enough.

Re: Not Good Enough

Yesterday I put my elderly dog down. I rescued him 16 years ago at which time he had two days to live at the shelter. He was a beautiful boy, gentle and loyal, he kept my other dog company for 15 years. She passed away in 2023, at which time I realised that he was quite deaf, much more that I realised. He was so depressed when she died I thought I might lose him soon as well. He kept my Dad company as he died of cancer at my house last year. He also felt down then too and was losing his sight. I made the decision last week because he had several illnesses and was finding it difficult to get around.

Now he is gone, I am rattling around the house by myself and the loss is bringing back the loss of all three of them. It's a difficult night

Re: Not Good Enough

Thanx @Jynx I knew it would be difficult, but I didn't consider it would bring up thoughts about the others.

It's possibly worse because I'm feeling quite depressed and Not good enough - hence this thread.

Re: Not Good Enough

Yes the house must seem so empty without him @Till23 amplifying your other losses.

Indulging in some selfcare and looking for comfort - not just throwing yourself into busyness - might not be easy if you're out of practice. But I hope you can try. Does music or a good movie help? Or books in your TBR pile (if you have one)?

It's chilly here tonight. I'm trying to do some chores before bed. I sat down to reply to you so the cat jumped on my lap. Sending some of that warmth your way.

Re: Not Good Enough

Thanks @Dimity I had a fairly easy day today and tried to deal with some of his things. I sat in the sun for a short while and did some word puzzles, and just tried to notice the butterflies, birds, dragonflies and my kookaburra kept a good eye on me, as did the magpies. I have to go to my sport tomorrow and have a meeting after that, then I'll try to take it a bit easy, look at some photos of them probably. I have an absolutely massive TBR stack. It's on the cool side here tonight. It is supposed to start raining tomorrow, so sport might not be on, but I'll still have the meeting.

Do you just have the one cat?

Re: Not Good Enough

Yes @Shaz51 I've heard of cats and dogs trying to get into people's suitcases when they are packing for a holiday

Re: Not Good Enough

Yes just the one @Till23 . I've had up to 3 at once. He's an older cat with 3 legs. Here on the forums I call him Tiger.

My area is being redeveloped and has lost many birds. We still have magpies and noisy miners. Others are seasonal visitors eg I've heard lorikeets as one of the gums is flowering.
