Talking through trauma and PTSD

Acceptance is hard work

Acceptance is hard work

Before I start, I just want to say…that I don’t feel comfortable in this space. It’s hard to be in the trauma and PTSD forum, but for me at the moment, I’m working through a level of acceptance.

I don’t have a diagnosis, I’ve never spoken to or seen a counsellor, or received any kind of mental health support. I have a very good friend who works in a healing space and has seen and experienced the impact my mental health and my triggers has on me. She has a lived experience of CPTSD and she knows a little of my story. She has helped me with resources and just by being a wonderful safe space for me to talk about what I’m experiencing. She suggested that perhaps, I could be experiencing the symptoms of CPTSD.

I completed a self-referral for the guided recovery program and have started that process. It has me straddling the line of acceptance. I have always had “anxiety” and have experienced panic attacks and flash backs and all of those good things. My first memories of my anxiety was when I was a teenager. But now, I accept that it isn’t entirely accurate.

My brain’s blocked out some of my memories of what happened to me. Logically, I know that it happened, but it was as if…if I couldn’t remember it all, then maybe I could live with doubt and maybe that doubt was permission to say…”you know what? Maybe It’s not real.” And if it didn’t really happen, then I don’t have CPTSD.

I will also acknowledge that I have been fairly avoidant with seeking help for a number of reasons, but one of those reasons is because I don’t want to talk about/acknowledge that what happened, actually happened.

I’m in a space at the moment where I know that the first step for me is actually owning it and accepting it. But, that makes me feel very vulnerable, and the acceptance feels “slippery,” I can’t quite wrap my head around it, as if a part of me is protecting me from it, if that makes sense.

Last year, a friend (who is no longer a friend) told me in an argument that I use my anxiety “as an excuse” and maybe she’s right - but not in the context she meant it. I’ve used my anxiety as an excuse not to acknowledge that there’s something else behind it. Is acceptance something that you let happen organically as you move through life, and counselling and all the processes? Or is this something that you push yourself through, knowing that it’s an important step? How do you work through this process of arriving at acceptance on multiple levels?

@Jynx @rav3n @tyme and I don’t know who else to tag, I’m sorry.

@tyme can we leave today as is? Do you mind? I don't know what the rest of today will look like...

Tomorrow...

- take Luna for a walk

- work on and submit my assignment

- cut some wood for the fire.

- tidy up outside.

What about you?

Oh course @NightFury ! I'm led by you! Please don't feel pressured to share. I'm only asking if you think it'll help you.

Please know it's okay to tell me straight up if you don't feel up to sharing. I find it's good practice when it comes to boundary-setting.

Remember, the most important person here is you 🙂

For tomorrow:

- church in the morning

- then believe it or not, i have NOT idea what else!!!! I might go out for dinner? I really don't know! Or I might pass by here to say hello because I know I'll miss you all!

Thank you for sharing what you will be aiming to do tomorrow. Spending time with Luna sounds amazing. As for chopping firewood, I need to learn how! I hope to talk to you more about fireplaces and firewood. Actually, did you ever get that fireplace handle fixed? @NightFury

Re: Acceptance is hard work

It helps to sit with you and plan something out for my days @tyme it helps a lot. I was actually kinda of worried because for some reason I thought you wouldn't be around next week to work through my days with me...I don't know where I got that from.

Your day tomorrow sounds wholesome.

I'm happy to chat to you about wood and fireplaces when you're ready. The handle on my wood heater is functional. I glued the pieces back together, but it's not on tightly and falls off every time. The house is falling apart...to be honest, but it's a roof over my head. And I need to be grateful for that.

Hey @NightFury just stopping by to see how you're travelling this evening. I saw you had a rough night, but been keeping distracted today 😊

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Hi @Jynx thank you for stopping by.

I had a rough night, not a lot of sleep...again. it's been a couple of nights in a row with not a lot of sleep.

I've got a lot done today, random jobs to distract myself but I'm almost out of distractions, and it's almost time to stop for the night, so we'll see...

How was your day?

@NightFury aww yeah lack of sleep makes everything hard, hey!! I hope you can catch up on some tonight 🤞

Do you wanna come hang out in the Saturday Soiree? Sometimes the best distraction is getting caught up in conversation 😉

Day has been chill, just hanging about, did a bit of gaming, and now here with ma forums fam 😊

@Jynx I'll see you over there!

What kind of gaming do you do? What are some of your faves to play?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@NightFury ooo well at the moment I have been playing a lot of Elder Scrolls Online - I'm an RPG player through and through hehe. I also LOVE FromSoft games like Bloodborne and Elden Ring. Do you play video games?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I used to play a lot @Jynx I still have a Playstation 4 and a Switch. I haven't in a while though.

I love RPG games too. I used to enjoy playing Final Fantasy and games like Assassins Creed, The Witcher. I started the Harry Potter game, can't remember what it's actual title is, but was enjoying that before I packed my Playstation up to move from QLD. I have played a little of the Elder Scrolls and I enjoyed it. I also like the old school games like Mario, Crash Bandicoot and Sonic just for a little bit of fun. I am also impartial to a little Need for Speed.

@NightFury LOVE the Witcher 3!! Haven't played the first two tho! Do you know the Horizon games? Zero Dawn and Forbidden West? They are some of my all time favs for their story. Plus, you get to fight giant robot dinosaurs with a bow and arrow hehehe

Ahh nostalgia!! Played Mario a bit as a kid, and Crash Bandicoot - but only on my neighbours playstation!! My parents didn't let us have consoles, just had a GameBoy and played heaps of Pokemon haha.
