Talking through trauma and PTSD

Acceptance is hard work

Acceptance is hard work

Before I start, I just want to say…that I don’t feel comfortable in this space. It’s hard to be in the trauma and PTSD forum, but for me at the moment, I’m working through a level of acceptance.

I don’t have a diagnosis, I’ve never spoken to or seen a counsellor, or received any kind of mental health support. I have a very good friend who works in a healing space and has seen and experienced the impact my mental health and my triggers has on me. She has a lived experience of CPTSD and she knows a little of my story. She has helped me with resources and just by being a wonderful safe space for me to talk about what I’m experiencing. She suggested that perhaps, I could be experiencing the symptoms of CPTSD.

I completed a self-referral for the guided recovery program and have started that process. It has me straddling the line of acceptance. I have always had “anxiety” and have experienced panic attacks and flash backs and all of those good things. My first memories of my anxiety was when I was a teenager. But now, I accept that it isn’t entirely accurate.

My brain’s blocked out some of my memories of what happened to me. Logically, I know that it happened, but it was as if…if I couldn’t remember it all, then maybe I could live with doubt and maybe that doubt was permission to say…”you know what? Maybe It’s not real.” And if it didn’t really happen, then I don’t have CPTSD.

I will also acknowledge that I have been fairly avoidant with seeking help for a number of reasons, but one of those reasons is because I don’t want to talk about/acknowledge that what happened, actually happened.

I’m in a space at the moment where I know that the first step for me is actually owning it and accepting it. But, that makes me feel very vulnerable, and the acceptance feels “slippery,” I can’t quite wrap my head around it, as if a part of me is protecting me from it, if that makes sense.

Last year, a friend (who is no longer a friend) told me in an argument that I use my anxiety “as an excuse” and maybe she’s right - but not in the context she meant it. I’ve used my anxiety as an excuse not to acknowledge that there’s something else behind it. Is acceptance something that you let happen organically as you move through life, and counselling and all the processes? Or is this something that you push yourself through, knowing that it’s an important step? How do you work through this process of arriving at acceptance on multiple levels?

@Jynx @rav3n @tyme and I don’t know who else to tag, I’m sorry.

@tyme you okay?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Yeah. I think it's just the end of the week and today I had to put in a crimestoppers report because this person was driving off the road, driving so slow, then side swiped a car etc. So I had to get the dash cam footage and spend time making the report... getting the footage was the pain, but honestly, I don't want people like that on the road. He was driving into oncoming traffic too @NightFury

So it wasted my afternoon, and then pushed everything back so I feel I've fallen behind. That's all.

No biggie lol. There are bigger things to worry about!

Congrats to you for making it through another week! When are your school holidays?

@tyme sounds like you did a good thing, because you never know what could happen down the track. It may feel like it's set you back, but you may have protected someone. It's not a good feeling though, when you feel as if you're chasing your tail all day but you'll catch up on what you need to do.

This week was touch and go, but got there so far. We have another two weeks left of term, then holidays.

I think the kids here have hoidays around 5th July or something @NightFury

Do you find the holidays helpful? Are you still studying then?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@tyme I think the first day of our holidays is the 7th, so around about the same time.

I don't know. I have a hard time with slowing down, so...

Last school holidays were rough.

We have our last assignment for the course we're doing due on Sunday, then we get two weeks off. So we go back to study again in the second week of the holidays.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I've been trying to work on an assignment that was due last week... arghh. And I think I have another one due soon.

It's the reflective practice notes that I have to complete as part of refelcting on my own practice working in MH @NightFury

Joys.... at least it's winter. I'm not missing out on going out to the beach or having a swim in the pool at least 🙂

Re: Acceptance is hard work

You'll get them done @tyme. Studying creates so much stress. I wish we could study, but not have time limits or deadlines for assignments. Study but like...at our own pace.

Though, knowing me, I probably wouldn't get anything done.

There's a positive I guess! It's winter and it's cold - the perfect time to be holed up inside working on assignments.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@tyme I saw you reply on someone else's post. I hope it's okay to tag you here, I don't need anything, except someone to know, I guess.

I seem to be in the middle of a rough morning. I woke up at ridiculous o'clock, feeling really heavy, let myself sit in it for a little while before forcing myself into action, because if I'm moving then I'm not stewing on how terrible I feel. I've done the housework, and have just sat down to work on my assignment.

But...my anxiety is high. My heart is beating into my head. I feel foggy, spinny and headachey and I'm struggling. I'm okay, but so far...today isn't a great one.
