Talking through trauma and PTSD

Acceptance is hard work

Acceptance is hard work

Before I start, I just want to say…that I don’t feel comfortable in this space. It’s hard to be in the trauma and PTSD forum, but for me at the moment, I’m working through a level of acceptance.

I don’t have a diagnosis, I’ve never spoken to or seen a counsellor, or received any kind of mental health support. I have a very good friend who works in a healing space and has seen and experienced the impact my mental health and my triggers has on me. She has a lived experience of CPTSD and she knows a little of my story. She has helped me with resources and just by being a wonderful safe space for me to talk about what I’m experiencing. She suggested that perhaps, I could be experiencing the symptoms of CPTSD.

I completed a self-referral for the guided recovery program and have started that process. It has me straddling the line of acceptance. I have always had “anxiety” and have experienced panic attacks and flash backs and all of those good things. My first memories of my anxiety was when I was a teenager. But now, I accept that it isn’t entirely accurate.

My brain’s blocked out some of my memories of what happened to me. Logically, I know that it happened, but it was as if…if I couldn’t remember it all, then maybe I could live with doubt and maybe that doubt was permission to say…”you know what? Maybe It’s not real.” And if it didn’t really happen, then I don’t have CPTSD.

I will also acknowledge that I have been fairly avoidant with seeking help for a number of reasons, but one of those reasons is because I don’t want to talk about/acknowledge that what happened, actually happened.

I’m in a space at the moment where I know that the first step for me is actually owning it and accepting it. But, that makes me feel very vulnerable, and the acceptance feels “slippery,” I can’t quite wrap my head around it, as if a part of me is protecting me from it, if that makes sense.

Last year, a friend (who is no longer a friend) told me in an argument that I use my anxiety “as an excuse” and maybe she’s right - but not in the context she meant it. I’ve used my anxiety as an excuse not to acknowledge that there’s something else behind it. Is acceptance something that you let happen organically as you move through life, and counselling and all the processes? Or is this something that you push yourself through, knowing that it’s an important step? How do you work through this process of arriving at acceptance on multiple levels?

@Jynx @rav3n @tyme and I don’t know who else to tag, I’m sorry.

Hi @Shaz51

Having a bit of an emotional day. I think...perhaps it's made worse by the fact that I'm tired.

I'm just taking it easy tonight and trying to remind myaelf that I'm connected here.

How are you, my friend?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I can empathise with being teary at the drop of a hat this afternoon @Shaz51

I'm glad you have Mr Shaz to cook you some dinner, and give you a bit of space tonight.

I have been out. I did some mental health week activities in my local area. I went to a morning tea, then to an art exhibition in a building I used to work in. And lawn bowls training this afternoon.

Welcome back @NightFury!

How was the mental health morning tea? 😍

Oh wow, yes, of course it brought back memories. How did it feel to take everything in and sit with those thoughts?

I am so sorry these services didn't meet your needs, that can be such a deflating feeling. 😔

Know that if I was with you, I would be honoured to be this person! Which gets me thinking... what if you explored getting a peer support worker in person? I think this could be such a wonderful addition to your support network and they would be able to hold this space for you over a coffee.

It definitely makes sense. 💛

Re: Acceptance is hard work

This may be a silly question @AuntGlow , although I suspect the answer may be "it depends on your state/territory" or "through NDIS funding", but how does one get access to support of an in-person peer support worker?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

The morning tea was okay @AuntGlow I got some info on a local service I can call if need be. It was mainly older people, but the facilitator was nice. She's a social worker.

It made me feel a little sad for the friendships and the people that I had at that time, that I don't have any more. It was nice to walk through the building and to feel the energy, both of the building and of the friendships that we had in that building.

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but how does one get a peer support worker in person?

Hello lovely! I was just thinking of you and wondering how things are going at home?

(Feel free to tag me in your thread if you'd rather share there) @AlwaysMyself

I believe you can access support through platforms like Mable without an NDIS plan! https://mable.com.au/find-support/ 💛

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I am glad you got some information out of it @NightFury. Perhaps these are slow steps towards finding the right places for you?

Would you ever join a community group based on a hobby?

Also have I shared Grow Groups with you before?

Hmm, it sounds rather bittersweet... I think I have said this to you already, but the fact you have had such wonderful experiences and friendships shows me that you can absolutely find them again. And I think putting yourself out there, in these new spaces, is such a radical act of self-love - you're telling the universe that you're ready to recieve. And I think you will.

Have you done any tarot readings today?

Also, I sent a link to you, but will do more research! 💛

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Maybe @AuntGlow

You did share the GROW groups with me and I've been thinking about it today as something that maybe I'd like to try. I don't think I was ready when we first talked about it. I rang and made inquiries and then chickened out. But maybe I'm ready now?

I don't really have a lot of hobbies @AuntGlow but I would consider it.

No tarot readings today. I'm having a friend read my tarot for me on Thursday, so I'm kind of waiting for that.

I've been looking at the link, thank you for sharing it. I think it's a good idea to get a peer support worker. I just have to figure out how.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Good afternoon @NightFury! 💛

I get that, I have sat with things after enquiring many times. Listening to your body is an amazing skill to have. If you're ready now - go for it!!

Let's come back to that. 🫶

Oh yes, I remember! Very exciting. I keep pulling oracle cards that are about using my voice and my creativity. I have a big block around going back to singing, but that's what my heart really wants... it's the most vulnerable thing I can do because of how much it means to me. It's interesting - something bigger definitely knows what's up. Please share your reading with me (if you want to, of course).

Let me know how you go, I have a good feeling about this. ☺️
