Talking through trauma and PTSD

Acceptance is hard work

Acceptance is hard work

Before I start, I just want to say…that I don’t feel comfortable in this space. It’s hard to be in the trauma and PTSD forum, but for me at the moment, I’m working through a level of acceptance.

I don’t have a diagnosis, I’ve never spoken to or seen a counsellor, or received any kind of mental health support. I have a very good friend who works in a healing space and has seen and experienced the impact my mental health and my triggers has on me. She has a lived experience of CPTSD and she knows a little of my story. She has helped me with resources and just by being a wonderful safe space for me to talk about what I’m experiencing. She suggested that perhaps, I could be experiencing the symptoms of CPTSD.

I completed a self-referral for the guided recovery program and have started that process. It has me straddling the line of acceptance. I have always had “anxiety” and have experienced panic attacks and flash backs and all of those good things. My first memories of my anxiety was when I was a teenager. But now, I accept that it isn’t entirely accurate.

My brain’s blocked out some of my memories of what happened to me. Logically, I know that it happened, but it was as if…if I couldn’t remember it all, then maybe I could live with doubt and maybe that doubt was permission to say…”you know what? Maybe It’s not real.” And if it didn’t really happen, then I don’t have CPTSD.

I will also acknowledge that I have been fairly avoidant with seeking help for a number of reasons, but one of those reasons is because I don’t want to talk about/acknowledge that what happened, actually happened.

I’m in a space at the moment where I know that the first step for me is actually owning it and accepting it. But, that makes me feel very vulnerable, and the acceptance feels “slippery,” I can’t quite wrap my head around it, as if a part of me is protecting me from it, if that makes sense.

Last year, a friend (who is no longer a friend) told me in an argument that I use my anxiety “as an excuse” and maybe she’s right - but not in the context she meant it. I’ve used my anxiety as an excuse not to acknowledge that there’s something else behind it. Is acceptance something that you let happen organically as you move through life, and counselling and all the processes? Or is this something that you push yourself through, knowing that it’s an important step? How do you work through this process of arriving at acceptance on multiple levels?

@Jynx @rav3n @tyme and I don’t know who else to tag, I’m sorry.

Well done @NightFury !

You've accomplished quite a lot, especially considering you had very few spoons yesterday.

Did you wake up with many spoons this morning?

I actually had a few more spoons up by sleeve today.

Do you have a study plan for the weekend? We can do it together. I have a new course I have to complete and it takes about 4 hours.

Today, I got most of my things done today.

I'm logging off in about an hour so I'm going to spend some time with my neice. She's been so good this week. I'm so proud of her.

Tomorrow?

I'm not too sure yet. I might go to visit some people in the arvo, and then maybe church in the arvo, but that's it for now. And maybe some games with the kids.

You?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I woke up with more spoons today than yesterday @tyme

But have had to use them throughout the day and try to be conservative with the few remaining ones this afternoon/evening.

I don't have a study plan for the weekend - other than I know that I need to do it. I need to catch up on this week's course work and start the 2500 word assignment that's due next Sunday.

I don't really have a plan for this weekend actually.

I'm glad you've found some more spoons up your sleeve today, too. And that you got most of your stuff done! Sounds like a productive day.

Tomorrow?

There are severe weather warnings out for tomorrow...rain, winds and flooding, so what my day looks like will depend on the weather.

I need to...

- change the bedding

- do some house work just to do an end of the week tidy up

- take my bedding to the laundrette to wash and dry.

- groceries

- study

Hey @Jynx

Stuff has been really really tough this week.

How are you? Tell me about your week?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Awesome list. Can you plan in a self-care activity too @NightFury ?

Also, when you are at the laundrette, do you stay there to wait?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

I was thinking of going into town and buying my Grandfather a birthday present for his 90th birthday next Sunday @tyme if I do, I think I'd like to take myself out to lunch somewhere. So maybe that could be my self-care?

I do stay and wait, yes. I don't really have anywhere else to go, so I stay with my clothing and just play on my phone, check in on the forums...that kind of thing.

Re: Acceptance is hard work

Oh rough @NightFury . I've had a pretty busy/appt heavy week, but some good sessions esp with my psych. Hit the jackpot with the rain....it's falling on my freshly hung clothes 😑😂

You got much on this weekend? An assignment I think I read?

Re: Acceptance is hard work

@Jynx speaking of rain...

We have a severe weather warning forecast for here tomorrow - lots of rain, wind and flooding. I have washing on the line too and more to do.

I have ideas for the weekend, but no solid plans. It's been a big week and I've struggled a lot, so much so, I took myself to am urgent care clinic on Thursday..so I'm a bit conscious of not committing to a plan and more going with the flow, seeing how each day pans out.

I do have to get some study done, yes. My assignment is due next Sunday, but we have my grandfather's 90th birthday party on Sunday, so I have to get it done by Saturday, unless I decide to put in for an extension.

It sounds like you've had a busy, yet good week. Glad to hear it.
