I really regret filing for an IVO

I really regret filing for an IVO

So on Thursday evening I decided to file a IVO against my mum. I applied it online via our state’s magistrates court website. The application hasn’t been formally processed/assessed yet since it was during after hours, plus yesterday was a public holiday. Now, the following morning (yesterday morning) it seems that I was able to settle things with my mum after she explained so many things to me (she was saying all of these from a place of care even when I’ve expressed to her many times that I do NOT wish to be in a relationship or potentially marry someone she tries to introduce me with just because she wants me to connect with people so bad) via messenger after I kept arguing with her over it. And the things she said actually made me reconsider…and thought about withdrawing/revoking my IVO application. I thought, maybe I should actually be more open to meeting the guy that she just introduced me with via messenger on Thursday afternoon. So I applied to revoke the order online through the same website yesterday evening.

Ever since last night, I haven’t been able to get any sleep since throughout all those hours (though I took breaks in between) I kept googling for answers with several different related questions after I’ve read that you still need to attend court hearing even after you’ve applied to revoke your application. That really made me scared and broke my heart, as I’m now scared what my mums gonna think and feel about it all. But I also don’t want her to experience that much level of anxiety as much as I do… 😞

They’ll still call me and my mum about the application as well as a requirement for us to attend a court hearing in the next couple of business days unfortunately. 😭

The reason I applied for the IVO was because the situation I’ve mentioned to numerous services in the past 2-3 months they all provided this as one of the options (even if that means that my mum and I aren’t allowed to be in contact with each other ever again), so I now decided to go for it, thinking that it’ll be fine if my mum and I aren’t allowed to be in contact with each other after the application has been processed/assessed by the court… but thinking about that now I regret applying for it and would like for us to remain in contact 😞 but since I’ve applied to revoke the order, I really hope with the evidence I can provide to the magistrate to show that there really was a ‘change of circumstances’ or whatever can make them revoke/dismiss my application.

I’ve consulted with a paid lawyer though and he’s doing his best to get things sorted for me on Tuesday when the court opens again, to see if he’ll be able to get my application dismissed BEFORE the court processes the application. Praying that this’ll be the case for Tuesday 🙏🙏🙏

I’ve been severely stressed out and crying at the thought of having to go to court but also the thought of my mum and I not allowed to talk to each other as part of the requirement now really breaks my heart... But again, I really hope my lawyer will be able to get it dismissed before the court actually processes the application.🙏😭

this time I’m trying to calm down a bit after having a chat to another lawyer about it and him trying his best to reassure me and encourage me to stay positive and to wait for Tuesday

So then it's more about 'harm minimisation' than aiming for full prevention. That might look like:

Having an emotional support person present during difficult meetings

Asking to take regular breaks/tap out if needed so you can go regulate

Bringing stim toys or other familiar items to help with grounding and stimming

Being allowed to have stuff like noise cancelling headphones I guess? "

IVOs aren't about minimization. They're about MAXImisation.

After having some sent to me, I can say they are the last thing needed. they're divisive, at best. And there is gender/bias perception involved, particularly in the MH space.

All I would say is avoid the whole schem like the plague.

That is great they were flexible and could do that for you. @Blackcloud I hope you continue to be able to negotiate good times and boundaries with your mother. Take care

Re: I really regret filing for an IVO

@Appleblossom unfortunately, my mother still believes in the fact that i need a partner that i can be with and look up to for the rest of my life, mainly in the cases/purposes of just having someone that i can hang out with and talk to, and also in the cases where i'll have to look up to him and live with him by the time both my parents will pass away in the future, as well as having someone to look/take care of me if I get very sick.

She knows that I still struggle to make connections with people, so she had to get my aunty (since my aunty has connections with a few different people in our ethnic country) to look for a guy that I can potentially "be with" or talk to...one of the guys my mum told me about last Thursday is actually in australia now (to study) as he just migrated from there to here. It's either sometime this year or next year that I'm gonna be meeting him unfortunately.

@Blackcloud It is not easy to change people with fixed mindsets. I hope in time she will come to accept you as you are. Like you I have come to value, and need a lot of independence.

Re: I really regret filing for an IVO

@Appleblossom I guess it's fine though that I'll have to meet 'my guy' soon. Maybe being independent for a long time is more of a difficult thing to handle and live with than being/living with someone.

Yeah I'm with @Appleblossom - @Blackcloud you are whole, you are enough, your are complete, exactly as you are!!

Re: I really regret filing for an IVO

Though if he does end up being a good fit @Blackcloud and there is some chemistry, I understand longing for a good relationship. The caring should probably go both ways, and may be complementary rather than same or equal.

I am not in a position to give relationship advice. I am cautious but not sworn off them. It has been over 20 years for me. Everyone is unique. I just wouldn’t want to reject a potential good.
