@MissGremlin and @NightFury (and @AuntGlow )
I also experience the next-day "lighter, but feel bruised and tender" next day after a big cry or emotional outpour. We're in good company with each other, I think.
My fluffy dog would definitely agree that having strangers to the house is very disregulating @MissGremlin . He gets very nervous and upset until they leave, and even after that he is on edge for a while until he properly calms. And there is nothing i can do that prevents it - i can sit with him, talk to him, pat him.... nope. Doesn't work. Partly trauma possibly for him, possibly part instinct because he is 30% maremma. If he met the same person in the street though, he would go up and greet them (he even does it to people he loves seeing at the cafe and trusts, if they come to my house!)
I'm sorry your family perceive it as "weak" ☹️; im sorry they dont understand. Im sorry that masking up is the safest way to be with them.
I hope you are able to limit the time, take many long "toilet breaks" (maybe you have a minor gastro bug?? 😉😉), and get through it.
I hope you can plan to do unwinding and healing self-care after they depart.
