Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Hi everyone. First time poster and new to SaneForums. I was hoping for some advice from people who have lived through similar experiences.

I have suffered from depression and anxiety for around 8 years now. I recently have gone through a break up of a long term relationship, lost my job and my home. For the first time in my life I am having strong suicidal urges.

I have always been very open about talking about mental health, but am struggling to talk about the suicidal thoughts. I have a GP i see regularly, as well as a new psychologist but I feel this is not currently enough to keep me safe. I do not know how to get the next level of help. I have spoken to lifeline, but I feel if things stay as they are or got any worse I may need to be hospitalised.

Does anyone have any experience with hospitalisation for mental health or calling 000? I am unsure who I should be asking for, police or ambulance. If anyone has any advice as well on reaching out to family to discuss suicidal plans I would also be incredibly grateful.

I'm at my lowest low, but not giving up just yet. Thank you for any advice.

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

My main concern about talking to me family is that my parents almost have to find out if I call 000. After losing my job/home I have had to move back in with them, so any help involving emergency services they are going to know. They care for me deeply, but I just don't know how to approach the conversation with them. I have always spoken about mental health, but I feel suicidal thoughts is also very likely to upset them deeply. It is holding me back from reaching out. I find there are a lot of temptations around the home that could increase my likeliness to harm myself, but without talking to them it is also hard to try and remove these from myself.

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Hi @SteamedToast,

i experience them often as well. I think if you are really worried about them tonight calling your CAT team is a good idea. If you just want to talk about it this is a good place to. I think if you are becoming increasingly worried maybe you decide if you want your parents help or not. Would they be helpful? If yes is the answer to that maybe you could talk to your mental health professionals about how that conversation goes for you. Personally I can't go there with the ones I love. I use lifeline, suicide call back, ocassionally CAT team but if I'm bad I go to A&E at hospital. My son has driven me there and I just told him I was unwell and needed help. He just dropped me off. Also the CAT team has called ambulance before. Personally I've never called 000 before so I'm not sure how that works. I hope this helps.

When I have sucidal thoughts I think of a saying. "Never make a permanent decision on an emotion, emotions change but decisions will be permanent." Helps me get through the blackness until I can get more support. Keep on fighting.

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Hi @SteamedToast

I have been in your position. Loss of job, home and marriage plus adult kids. I ultimately ended up living on the streets.

If you are not in imminent danger of acting on your thoughts I suggest you call your local CAT team but I do recommend you take a deep breath and tell your parents about how bad things are for you at the moment. It is far better for them and for you if they know before the world blows up for you.

This will make it easier for you or your parents to call 000 if your current crisis spins out of control. As this can happen really quickly it really is important to do the talking now. It will certainly make it easier for your parents and you won't feel quite so afraid or alone.

When you call 000 you may find it difficult to say anything. Don't put the phone down. They have a procedure they follow if a person can't speak. This is not uncommon. The police will be contacted and they will trace your call and location. Police and Paramedics will attend and will help you. They'll also help your parents cope.

Don't be afraid of either the police or ambos. You'll find them to be very kind and careful. If when they arrive you change your mind and decide not to get help they will make an assessment and if necessary place you under an Emergency Order. This is not a criminal offence. It is how the police, ambulance and medical professionals can help you when you are no longer able to help yourself.

Do take care and try to get help from your parents, Mental Health team and 000 if needed. Hugzzz.

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Hi @SteamedToast, welcome to the forums. I have been where you are and it does get better and it will be worth the fight - hang in there.

My experience with strong Suicidal Thoughts (suicidal ideology - SI) was intense twice in my life after a major loss of loved one. Loss is the key word here - grief = pain, really bad emotional pain we can't even identify half the time but it is a huge internal stress, an invisible ailment, a life threatenening one because it drives us to want to STOP THE PAIN. Without alternative coping skills suicide screams the loudest solution. But there is so much help now:
- suicide callback service (which I found the best in crisis)
- lifeline
- mental health community assessment teamteam
- emergency
Other maintenance strategies I have learned are
- psychologist therapy sessionssessions
- mindfulness grounding
- self compassion therapy
- support group (AA, GROWGROW, church home group, Sports Gp...
- antidepressants (gd for anxietyptsd)
- journalling
- Research, BKS by Russ Harris
- I like google search quotes - ZigZiglar, Echart Tolle, Buddha, Jesus ..

With telling family, I have nobody I can trust on that level. My exp is that most people panic, don't know what to do and fear they have the life of another in their hands - a burden I couldn't inflict on any of my fily or friends. So I resort to crisis lines, gp, psychologis & other MH professionals. The important this g is that you TELL someone which reduces its power over you. The anxiety, the fear of having a homicidal person within threatening you is froghtening anx very stressful. Talk. In a way its part of you trying to end the pin but a primitive pral part that has been superceeded by modern medical psychology & community support. You are not alone.

Stay strong xox

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Hi SteamedToast,

I've also suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts for many years. My family have no idea the hell I have endured. I have lost a job, a marriage and several close friends. I was a very strong independent person and never thought I would crumble or have a breakdown. I'm currently dealing with major stress, anxiety and depression and trying very hard to cope without intervention. I decided that life is hard and I've just got to cope. Easier said than done. I've often wondered why life is so hard and why the ones I loved left me. What is wrong with me? These days I'm trying to turn my thinking around because years of anti-depressants and being miserable haven't helped. Some days I start off very positive and things go well but other days I still struggle and the day seems very long and bleak. However, I can't keep looking to others for my happiness and some how you and me have to climb out of this hole and take charge of ourselves. The first step is to keep pushing the black thoughts away. Every time you start to think sad or negative stop yourself. Stand up and do something. Get on the computer and listen to something happy or go and have a shower, walk around the block or clean out a cupboard. Do something physical like digging or sweeping. Anything to distract youself. Life won't change and you'll still be lonely, but you'll have CONTROL of your life. It's okay to be sad and it's okay to be annoyed with your life but we are the only ones who can change things. Today I'm packing up old magazines and books. Why ?? to fill in the day. I've got Willie Nelson and the Highwaymen playing on a DVD and I'm trying very hard to focus on the good stuff. It's not easy and I'd rather crawl under a bed and disappear but I've decided that my life does matter. Others have made me feel worthless by hurting me but I can't keep using that as an excuse. They made their choices and I can't change that. We need to get back to living. Good luck.

Re: Seeking help for suicidal thoughts.

Thank you everyone for such kind advice. Today I am finding it difficult to get out of bed, but my plan is to call the CAT team today (you guys can feel free to hold me to it!). I think I will find a place where I do have privacy from my family and perhaps ask the CAT team to guide me through having that conversation.

I'm hoping all this that you have shared with me will be enough for me to reach out to for additional help. Thank you again for those who helped me through last night. It was also nice to wake and see people had thought of me. I will keep everyone posted. X
