Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Triggers

Triggers

  • Hi team,

I've been just discharged from the mental ward a few days ago, been there involuntary for 3 weeks due to a manic psychotic episode. I've recovered from that. But since being home, its been very triggering and exhausting, but I can't deal with that now because I have to go back to work.

How to work this one out?

Re: Triggers

Hey @Fun ,

What do you think would be helpful for you at this time?

Seeing the Si urges are high, is there some form of distraction that would be helpful?

Hi @tyme ,

I'm taking my medications early so I can go to sleep. I've been trying distractions all day, but they haven't been working well. Last thing is knock myself out. It sucks honestly because I know it too well.

Re: Triggers

Hi @tyme ,

Thank you for that. I'm still trying. Trying to get up and do something at least. Maybe over time it'll work.

Good on you for giving things a go. I hear it's not easy. Hopefully things will improve @Fun

Hi @tyme ,

Do you have any tips when all else fails?

Re: Triggers

Don't fight @Fun

Let the thoughts and emotions come and go. Observe them. Watch them. Get to know them and what they look and feel like.

By doing this, you are observing the emotions as opposed to being wallowed up in them.

This takes practice to do effectively.

Hi @tyme ,

Thank you, but I have no idea what that means, I'm not there yet. I have to fight it.

This is the sushi train metaphor. Represents our thoughts... to just let them come and go. @Fun

Re: Triggers

Thank you @tyme ,

Let me discuss this, I understand the sushi train concept. But what I struggle is they stay for too long, weeks until I give up. Because these bad thoughts are many and keep on coming more rapidly around the sushi train. So if I let them be, they won't go away, they will certainly come back.

Does that make sense?
