Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Triggers

Triggers

  • Hi team,

I've been just discharged from the mental ward a few days ago, been there involuntary for 3 weeks due to a manic psychotic episode. I've recovered from that. But since being home, its been very triggering and exhausting, but I can't deal with that now because I have to go back to work.

How to work this one out?

Hey @Fun ,

Great to hear from you. I hear it can be frustrating when recovery doesn't move as fast as we expect. At the same time, good on you for rising to the challenge! I recognise it's not easy at all.

Go slow, one step at a time. That's all that anyone can expect of you. You can only do your best.

Have you spoken to your team about the issues with sleep?

Re: Triggers

Hi @tyme ,

Thank you, yes one small step at a time. My therapist is working with me slowly on building a somewhat stable life. Learning the basics from her.

Regarding my sleep, we've been trying to manage that with different medication, but I'm having aweful side effects from them. We're still trying to manage my sleep. It's very frustrating when you're fully awake the whole night unable to sleep. It ruins my day and it makes it hard to be stable when you don't get enough sleep.

I've always had difficulty sleeping and sometimes night medication cause me insomnia and akathisia. At least for now the akathisia is being dealt with, now it's just the insomnia that I need to fix and not sure how when medication fails.

Yes @Fun ,

Sleep is so so important @Fun . As you said, without sleep, it just ruins your whole day.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned, but 'fixing' my sleep/insomnia was one of the most important aspects of my recovery. I body physically couldn't heal. In a way, it was like my frayed nerves were continually buzzing day in and day out... and yes, that was tiring.

Hang in there mate. If you have any concerns with your meds, continue to check it out with your doc.

We are here to support you.

Hi @tyme ,

Thank you for sharing.

And you're right, my body feels not in its place when I don't sleep. I wouldn't have the energy to do anything.

I'm learning how to share my concerns to doctors, it was hard initially to say anything because of the lack of trust.

Re: Triggers

I guess it's about finding someone you feel comfortable with so that you can then build on the trust @Fun .

I've found some great docs I got along with so well in the past, but when they started charging nearly $100, I didn't think it was worth it - just for a script.

So now, I'm back to just the local GP for transactional appointments. I get what I need then walk out. I don't feel I need that level of high support anymore.

But yes, in the past, having a team that really knew me was super helpful.

Hope you find what works for you very soon.
