Touching the darkness

Touching the darkness

Last week I had an experience where I felt the darkness inside of me, like a physical darkness that I did not dare to touch.

For nearly 2 years now I've been remembering a long past of multiple layers of traumas and trying to "compartmentalise" so I can still function. Feeling that darkness that I think in essence is all the locked up feelings has unsettled me. I don't know if it's good or bad - has anyone else ever felt that way?

Thanks @Former-Member

Yes - I think I do understand

I don't know your story - but I do understand about the being treated like a raw egg with a thin shell - I have a dx of being emotionally fragile - and yes - I am - but apart from here or with my therapist it is not something I would want to talk about - I understand what you are saying about self-pity and I have an idea about that

Self-pity is fine in very small doses - after all - if no one cares we have to do the caring for ourselves - but in reality it doesn't get us far - so we go on our journey

And you say you can never change but you need to change - um yes - when you have been a victim (and I was) it is impossible to change that past - but staying in the victim place even if we change the role - um - hard to say - mmmmmmm - ummmmmm [this is me thinking hard]

Okay - my mother's belting me and my bro - really hard memories - but I also remember I started fighting back - but - the really bad memories were repressed - I didn't know they were there - but it was safe to remember after she died and I have had to work hard on getting away from that -

But I have - seeing that I am a tough cookie my mother couldn't control

When we started going to marriage councellling my MIL told me my husband would never change - and from something my sil said I gather he still has not changed - and the thought of living in that locked-up mind-set he had - where he could not react to on-going life - that is so sad - it destroyed our marriage - and I did not give up easily

So change - yes - right now it seems impossible but I can see you know you need to - and I guess it will take time to sink in - and you will

It is better - you do have the picture right though - other people can only help you so far and you know that - as hospital can only help you so far

The trauma you suffered has damaged something deep inside you - as your adult mind as developed you can see this - but your survival mode of your early life has set hard - and it is bl^^dy uncomfortable for you

I think I get it - hard work

But the Flower I can see is worth knowing - and growth - and change - and time - I am sure the Flower you can grow into will be even better

Hugs - Dec

Hi @Decadian

Read a story about boiling water an egg, carrot and coffee today. Try google it.

I feel so out of control at the moment. I'm glad my partner is coming home soon, I'm finding it hard to breathe.

Hi @Former-Member

I read the story - easy to find everyone - interesting

Flower I am definitely the coffee bean - life has scrunched, crush and ground me - but I definately make the circumstances of my life "better" - like coffee I guess - which if it is good coffee - I really like it strong and bitter

I'm sorry it was hard for you yesterday - I hope you felt more settled after your partner came home

Re: Touching the darkness

Hi @Decadian

I'm an egg and I think they're trying to make me a carrot, guess it'll be a while before I'm coffee.

To be honest my day was shocking, it took me a while but I'm pretty sure I suffer bad withdrawal from one of my meds. I think I'm not supposed to mention them, but they are really really hard to get off and apparently I am tolerant and dependent. Thankfully I'm seeing my psych tomorrow so I can discuss it.

I took them now and am drinking, I know I shouldn't but I'm just over this day. I haven't been able to eat, I can't be bothered with anything. Will just stick it out until my bed time. Somehow I don't get how I should give a f* about anything, I keep making good resolutions and then I have shit days and then anniversaries of traumatic events and I'm over trying to figure out what the F* triggered me again. Even contemplated going back to hospital again.

Sorry for a shitty post again. My brain is just f*

Hi @Former-Member

I liked the story too .. I like to think I can be coffee .. when I am confident ...but I am probably a weird salad of all 3.

@Former-Member just posted a pic in a quote thread with a similar idea.

Hope tomorrow is better.

Re: Touching the darkness

Hi @Former-Member

I can be an egg - I am emotionally fragile - so I am reminded of our hens - many years ago we always had two each year - they last about a year - usually laying one egg each a day

One hot day one hen laid two eggs and the second one didn't have a shell - it was perfect otherwise - what was inside was protected by a tough membrane

I have toughened up but refused to let life make me hard - we need to be able to be ourselves and it seems people are trying to make you what you are not - and this is so difficult for you

Something is always going to come along to trip us up - that's life

The most important thing is to learn to be the person we are and stick to the truth of ourselves

And this us not easy and I wish you the best

Re: Touching the darkness

Hi @Decadian

I think I was made into someone else in the past. I'm looking for myself.

I am scared to go to sleep tonight. I had a flashback in the morning and I feel rotten. When I look back at what I write here, I'm desperate.

Today was the first time I called helplines and it was just - I don't know. Talking is a problem. I'm sick and tired and my brain is exhausted. I will take sleep meds tonight. Can't face waking up.

Sorry, meant can't face waking up during the night. Will only take as subscribed.

@NikNik

What can I do when the questions from a helpline overwhelm me? I couldn't get hold of Suicide callback and tried the helpline here, but I just didn't know what to say, I was just confused and wanted someone to tell me it's gonna be ok and bring me back to the here and now.

Re: Touching the darkness

Good question @Former-Member
I think that answer is different for everyone. Maybe other members would like to share their strategies?

People who work on helplines (hopefully) want to do what works for you - so, it can be really helpful to tell them what is and isn't working. You seem to know what you want (ie: someone to tell you it's going to be okay and work with you to help you feel like you're in the present) and I would encourage you to be up front with them and tell them that's what you want.

And the same goes when something isn't helpful. If they are asking questions that are overwhelming, let them know.

They are there to help you and are often open to being guided on how to do that in a way that would be helpful for you.

Another suggestion would be to use their chat service.
Both Suicide call back service and Lifeline have 'crisis chat' or 'crisis counselling' Sometimes having the space and time to read something and consider responses can help with overwhelm.
Suicide call back chat: https://www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au/online-counselling

Lifeline chat: https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/online-services/crisis-chat

Hope this helps
