Faith & Mental Health

Faith & Mental Health

@tyme and anyone else who would like to join in on a discussion about faith and how it may affect/hinder/help us on our journey living with mental illness.

@Birdofparadise8 I tagged you but don't feel obliged to join in x

I used to struggle with my Christian beliefs when I was first diagnosed with clinical depression, and then again when I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder and severe

anxiety.

Does anyone else have these problems?

Congregation...

It's like there's categories

  1. Those who don't want to hurt me so don't try
  2. Those who try and then run away because I'm too much
  3. Those who don't try because they're scared I'll get too much
  4. Those who don't care to try
  5. Those who try and are too stupid and actually do hurt me
  6. Those who try and ultimately succeed, for the most part

We don't currently have a pastor, my elder though fits in category 6

@avant-garde ,

Ahhh, makes sense.

Fair enough. Each person has the choice to set their own boundaries and this is something that is out of our hands.

I don't know all the ins and outs, but do you think there is something you can do from your side to prevent any of the above 6 things from happening?

For me it's taken a lot of practice to actually let someone help me, and when I am not stretched like a tight rubber band I do tend to be more cautious in treading the water when it comes to my issues.

I have a category 2 right now that is just blatantly rude like I don't exist. But then others become a category 3 because of her, she has a mouth on her, creates more category 4's too. I have a few category 5's, not many though.

I was reading a book with my niece last night and the quote came up " A white-washed raven never stays white". I feel that if you are doing the right thing, people will eventually see @avant-garde

It also makes me thinks about a leopard cannot change its spots.

The truth will prevail.

If she wants to spread what she is spreading, she's got God to answer to.

The past will not be white washed for the sake of protecting the privileged...

I pray that they make their own decisions about me... that they try... that I accept...

Re: Faith & Mental Health

Do you trust that whatever happens will happen for the best @avant-garde ?

It brings to my memory:

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:29-31

You are more precious than many sparrows. God will not let even one fall without his permission.

That's my verse... it's been my verse for over 10 years... since my mum gave me her locket with the bird on the front... that in one of her rare moments of clarity... I said 'more than many sparrows' and she said yes...

Re: Faith & Mental Health

Well fancy that @avant-garde !

Isn't that enough to be your comfort? There is someone much greater looking down at you, and taking care of you.

Re: Faith & Mental Health

@tyme I know this verse wasn't meant for me but I love it, and it reminds me God is always in control. I don't believe things happen for the best, sometimes we have to walk a stony path and face adversity and pain for a greater good. I have absolutely no idea why God is leaving me in this Job-like desert but I cling the the hem of Jesus' robe knowing that at the end of the day He's got my back.

Thank you, I needed to hear this today xoxo

That's so precious. Thank you for sharing @ENKELI , esp the part about clinging to His robe - so true!
