Faith & Mental Health

Faith & Mental Health

@tyme and anyone else who would like to join in on a discussion about faith and how it may affect/hinder/help us on our journey living with mental illness.

@Birdofparadise8 I tagged you but don't feel obliged to join in x

I used to struggle with my Christian beliefs when I was first diagnosed with clinical depression, and then again when I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder and severe

anxiety.

Does anyone else have these problems?

@ENKELI @Bessie78 and all following this thread

On another site I saw these quotes

2 Samuel 16:12
New International Version
12 It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing instead of his curse today.

Psalm 3:5
New International Version
5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

I love my church, I've grown so much there and I have no intention of leaving.

But do you find that if you're in a church that they want to help but they have no experience outside their high end circles to actually know how to effectively help?

Re: Faith & Mental Health

Let's just say, they have good intentions @avant-garde ?

I guess some of the challenges people come to them with are quite above them? From what I know, those who are trained and educated to have these positions, get trained to be in these positions as opposed to dealing with the things they hear...

Do you think so?

@tyme

I've been told that people in my church want to help me but they're so dreadfully scared that they're going to hurt me that they don't offer.

Re: Faith & Mental Health

You mean the pastors? @avant-garde Or the actual congregation?

Re: Faith & Mental Health

@avant-garde there's a Californian mission called Soul Shepherding that is very knowledgeable and helpful re mental health. Their outreach is primarily to pastors but their posts and podcasts are accessible to snyone
