Welcome and getting started

Where to go for mental health help when you keep getting handballed?

Where to go for mental health help when you keep getting handballed?

At wit's end seeking mental health support.

I'm rural, and have been seeking help for four years right now, and either end up with people who are bad at what they do, who try and "gaslight" my problems away (they think it's how I think about my problems, not that I actually have problems, so I should just change how I think, which... isn't an approach I find viable or relevant to me). Otherwise, they handball me onwards, stating that I need serious psychiatric help they can't provide and that I need to be escalated: but there is nowhere to escalate me to, because the local hospital underwent an amalgamation with a large regional centre (Ballarat) and as a result don't bother following the Statewide Mental Health Triage Scale anymore (stories floating around here in rural Victoria are really not good: people who are way worse than me are not being seen until they end up in police custody instead of being dealt with when they seek help a week or two earlier, over and over, in violation of the hospital's own policies, but nobody cares).

The very, very few people who seem to listen generally have no idea what to do and tend to be a bit patronising (ie the SANE peer support worker I spoke to for a little bit). They'll listen to me for an hour or two, then throw me a few links to online psychology portals, saying maybe I can find someone to talk to there, not understanding that I have done this before. More than once.

I don't even know where to go anymore. I am completely out of options at this point, and I am utterly exhausted. Everyone keeps telling me the only people who should be helping me right now are the hospital's mental health service, but they aren't following their own triage guidelines and have implied unless I start talking about hurting myself or anyone else, that I should just ring lifeline, and I am just so very tired of doing this.

I was seeing a social worker through the "Step Thru Care" program as a "temporary" measure who does listen, but they have nowhere to send me and don't know what to do either? Just a case of "you are beyond me, let me google where I might send you... oh, there's nowhere, oops" yeah, no. Please no. We've been through this!

Do I make a scene? I have a former partner with BPD who said that helped her get attention, but it seems immature? But I have nowhere else. I keep getting referred from person to person, service to service and everyone tells me to contact area mental health at the hospital, not understanding they have had all their resources stripped and cannot deal with even the most pressing cases let alone someone like me (who isn't a threat to themselves or others).

It's almost four years now. It's just so hard and I have no ideas left, neither does anyone I talk to. I'm sick of being kicked around and patronised.

Just completely at my limit. Who do I talk to? Where do I go for help? I don't want to do this anymore?

Basically what I'm asking: has anyone else had any experience being thrown around, and if you managed to actually get through to someone, what did it take? How did you do it? Where?

Important to note: I don't want to say what my diagnoses are, but I will say I do not have a cluster B diagnosis (I have pulled my psych records to try and figure out why I kept getting handed off, that ain't it). The main reason is that most psychologists and therapists are trained in the cheapest and quickest to deliver modality of therapy, which has significant flaws and doesn't work at all for specific populations.

@goatlatte

Hearing your frustrations.

I am also concerned that some services are cherry picking clients.

Wish I could say it was easy for me.

taking control and ownership seems to get best results

Online sessions have limitations regarding them understanding real level of feelings

yesterday I met a group and there was “f**k mindfulness” embroidered on a cushion. I loved it…. Not that I am against meditation… as I discovered it in the early 1980s… but it needs to be part of a wholistic relevant personal approach to self care….

running…. Kickboxing…. Schema therapy… there are all sorts

Re: Where to go for mental health help when you keep getting handballed?

I'm unsure: I *used* to think I know what support I was looking for, but that's come up blank. I just get told that they don't know how to treat me and to go somewhere else. The problem is I've been doing this for several years now and I am really, really, *really* feeling like I'm running out of options. I think all that is left for me now is ECT?

I'm just sick of being patronised, spoken over, and handballed around in a circle. Do I need to act like someone who has BPD to actually get attention? I'm just tired of people telling me they don't know how to deal with me and furthering me onwards. I was sure that if I contacted people who deal with Cluster B patients they'd at least be able to cope, but they tell me I'm not in the right place and shuffle me onwards (tell me to just google a psychologist and I'll find one eventually), and I'm just completely at the end of my rope with this and I'm just tired of having to spend an hour explaining my situation to people over and over and over just to be told to move on (or, worse: told I should just do mindfulness).

Where do I go? Who do I speak to? I'm just so tired of this.

I'm sorry to hear you are in this space @goatlatte .

I just want to clarify that having BPD doesn't mean you get attention. If you look into the stigma around BPD, so many borderlines are turned away from services. They are denied admissions. As soon as doctors see the BPD diagnosis, they show you the door.

I am speaking from experience. So no, having BPD does NOT mean you get attention.

I'm sorry you feel this way.

I have a former partner who has BPD and they used to act in a specific way to get attention from services which worked for them? I also mean more that people suffering from BPD (or other specifically marginalised and stigmatised conditions like schizophrenia) have services/individuals who "specialise" in helping people suffering those conditions, but for me it's literally just "you're bipolar and dissociate a lot and PD-NOS (I've pulled my records, I know I haven't been diagnosed or provisionally diagnosed with something "bad", for reference), we don't know what to do with you, have you tried googling it?" yes, Karen, I've done that already, stop fobbing me off with links to sub-par therapist search portals goddamn. I'm just so very tired of all of this endless redirection and being told I'm not a good fit for a service and thrown onwards. It's been like this for three years now!

Hearing you @goatlatte

I think I was in a similar place. As a borderline, I remember having admission after admission and no one knew what to do. I clearly remember one MH nurse said to me, "Mindfulness will work". I felt so let down. I had a diagnosis, but no one could tell me where to go from there. It was disheartening. I clearly remember asking psychiatrists etc what I can do or where to go for help, and no one could give me an answer. It seemed that all they cared about what keeping me alive - quality of life didn't matter!

After 7 years, I moved interstate to try and start afresh. I thought things would get better. And it did - for a few months. Then it was the same, if not worse. I ended up in a terrible state with my MH. I had no family, no friends, no one to go to. I tried so many meds, saw so many therapists and psychiatrists, had many ED turn ups.....

Then.. eventually, another 6 years later, I was admitted into a special clinic. From there, things were hard, but 5 years on, things fell into place. Through this clinic, I was linked in with a psychologist, who then linked me in with other supports....

Thinking back, this has taken about 20 years to finally get the support I needed. It took a lot of trial and error. It took a lot of tears, and I never expected to recover.

It may be easy to say that I have BPD and therefore I got help, but no. Time and time again, I was turned away with no where to go.

Somehow miraculously, I was linked in with ONE person who cared. And from there, it happened.

Just keep going @goatlatte . I cannot promise how long it will take for you (hopefully not 20 years like me!) But if you live in hope, I believe you will get the support you deserve.

Re: Where to go for mental health help when you keep getting handballed?

can you reveal what other supports you were linked to?

ie what organisations are helping you ?

i have a support worker that i see once a week for an hour

but i am not happy with the way i am being treated

she talks over me and doesnt listen

we spend the session talking about her life

the supports are non clinical ie psychosocial support

i feel that she talks about herself as a way of protecting herself from listening to my problems

whereas i am looking for someone who is prepared to hear me out

i would rather not go to a psychiatrist or psychologist because ,as @goatlatte says, i feel gaslighted by them

i would be interested to know what organisations are helping you?

thanks
