You're Invited - Live Online Event in the Yarning Space, 27th May (Have your say!)

Hello,

Thank you for joining the "Yarning Space" subforum! It’s deadly to have you involved.

I am an Aboriginal man from Yuin Country, employed at SANE as the Social Emotional Wellbeing Manager (SEWB), my role is to embed a Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Framework into SANE’s programs and services which includes the forums, and the new Yarning Space currently being trialed and co-designed.

We would like to invite you to a special live event to provide us with some feedback about the yarning space and start the process of co-designing the future look and feel of the space as it's important that we know what’s important to you. The event will be a live online group discussion led by SANE and co-hosted by @ArraDreaming. Participants that join the event and contribute will be compensated for their time.

When: Monday 27th May 7:00pm to 8:30pm AEST

How to participate? Simply login at 7:00pm and join the live conversation by replying to some questions. Questions will be posted during this time, so you and others can respond and provide feedback.

We would love to get some feedback from you about:

  • How easy it is to sign up
  • How easy it is to find the space after you have signed up
  • How easy is it to post
  • Whether we keep the space invitation only but make it visible on the SANE Forums page.
  • What does SEWB mean to you and how can we make the space culturally safe, responsive to your needs, and unique compared to the other Forums?
  • What content would you like to see
  • What design would you like to see
  • Other suggestions/feedback

What is co-design? “Co-design” refers to a participatory approach to designing solutions, in which community members are treated as equal collaborators in the design process.

Hope you all can make it!

@SouthsNo1

Great question about culturally safe spaces

A culturally safe space is a place you feel welcome and without judgement, your culture is important here, not a stereotype or something people judge you for and you don’t have to explain yourself. People understand and have more knowledge around what First Nations people have experienced, what can help and welcome them into space with open arms

Most importantly it is safe and welcoming

I am in the same boat as @Captain24

I have not yet used the space

I am waiting for it to feel culturally safe

I would like there to be more members so that I feel more comfortable. I know that it is challenging to make this space run more like the main forums when there are so few members being involved. I guess the fact the some of us are hanging back is not helping this...

Re: You're Invited - Live Online Event in the Yarning Space, 27th May (Have your say!)

For me, talking with people in my family & connecting with family narratives has helped understand the struggles of my ancestors.

I can begin to understand that the mistakes my family made, the ways the unintentionally hurt me, were simply products of their own unresolved trauma.

They (family members) had forces operating on them ( poverty, lack of opportunity, institutionalisation, racism & prejudice) that effected their ability to ' be there ' for me.

Understanding things at a deeper level is healing for me.

Recently, I read a large scale research paper demonstrating that almost ALL mental illness can be linked to some form of: abuse, neglect or dysfunction. This makes heaps of sense. And it's empowering. It means our brains aren't faulty, maybe we just didn't have the same opportunities as others.

That's totally okay @Captain24 . We are glad you are here. If anything comes up for you tonight, feel free to respond when you are ready.

No pressure whatsoever.

There's no right and wrong. This is a friendly place.

I’m not overly culturally aware. But I do understand that other members it means a lot too. I like that they can express their culture comfortably and safely. As I’m not aware, it would be nice to learn and be able to ask for more information without judgement. I couldn’t do that on the regular forums

Yes it would have been wonderful to have this space on Australia Day/Invasion Day. I raised the fact that I didn't think it was a day for celebration on my own social media and got run over by the responses. I left a group over it.

How do you think we best bring people into the space and also then engage in the yarns
