D.I.D....

D.I.D....

Wanting to know if there's anyone else in this group caring for someone with D.I.D.?

We've got a family member with a very "crowded" internal world of multiple personalities. This goes along with compulsive behaviours, phobias, social anxiety, derealisation and other difficulties. The person in question sees medical and psychological practitioners regularly; it's a disorder that apparently doesn't respond to medication, and they have previously reacted badly to medications that have been trialled; I'm seeing a psychologist regularly myself to deal with the pressure and get some feedback/backup. I have a supportive husband and family, but otherwise it's hard to know how to or who to talk with about what's going on. It's an uncommon enough disorder that you have to explain an awful lot about it before a conversation can even really start, and then you run into dangerous ground regarding the privacy of the person in question.

Re: Dissociative Identity Disorder Carers?

Thanks again peoples... we got our day out today. Was fairly enjoyable, but also showed up how tired and on edge we are. Still, I'm hoping having deliberately given ourselves some relax and enjoy time may help us regain a bit of equilibrium. We spent some time pottering in antiqueries and op shops, and had lunch and afternoon tea at cafes.

I'm over-alert at the moment. Am OK with handling things most of the time, but Hubby has a middle of the night alarm at the moment to take painkillers so that the shingles pain doesn't build up and make sleep impossible. Usually I partially wake up and doze off again pretty quickly, but last night I jumped when it went off, and couldn't relax properly for ages. I think I was tuned in in case the phone rang, and so my mind immediately went into "to the rescue" mode. And Hubby accidentally left some of the medication he needs for the shingles at home, and that brought out his anxiety... we're both showing it in different ways.

@Smc trust things are ok for you and family at the moment.

@Determined, quiet right now. I want to ring up our daughter today to check on her. We haven't had her contact us all week, and usually no contact means things are reasonably stable, but last week was rough, so I'll check.

I'm often reluctant to be the one phoning her rather than vice cersa. A mixture of not wanting to intrude, and not wanting to encourage her to look for things that might be wrong. And, to be honest, a bit of plain tired on my part.

Can relate to that @Smc

Hope hubby is on the mend also.

Shingles is often the result of being run down and stressed. I got a big lecture about that from my gp when I had shingles. Unfortunately not as simple as just taking time out though.

Realy hope for you all that daughter is in fact doing better and it can continue that way.

Hubby is on the mend. He's been able to cut back the painkillers a bit, which is great.

Yeah, he's been stressed and run down. This year, he's had a painful ear infection, followed by a post viral thing that took a couple of months to shake, followed by shingles... Will have to feed him grapefruit and garlic to rebuild his immune system. Maybe not together. 😉

@Smc

My mum wants to keep feeding me product called astro forte. Has all the vitamins etc for improved immune response apparently. Can get it from health food shops or supermarket. Usually lives with the vitamins. Some chemists but not all stock it. Worth a try. 😁

It gives me reflux so I only take it when really run down rather than a preventative.

Re: Dissociative Identity Disorder Carers?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done a little bit of reading up about vitamins, minerals etc. and the general medical consensus seems to be that if you can get them via your food, the results are better. Supplements are good if you can't get them through diet for some reason, but diet seems to be the preferred first preference. And it tastes nicer. 😄 The challenge is making sure I actually do add the "necessaries" to the cooking. I love herbs and spices, and a lot of those are natural "concentrates" of all sorts of things. They meet all the requirements that an advertiser could dream of for "superfoods", but because they're common, they don't get the publicity.

I tend to agree re the supplements but worth knowing about 😏

Yeah ..... I had shingles in the middle of a really difficult patch at home that I had been trying to get through to the doctor over ...... ??!!

They still didn’t get the message ..... not till things blew out between father and son.
