D.I.D....

D.I.D....

Wanting to know if there's anyone else in this group caring for someone with D.I.D.?

We've got a family member with a very "crowded" internal world of multiple personalities. This goes along with compulsive behaviours, phobias, social anxiety, derealisation and other difficulties. The person in question sees medical and psychological practitioners regularly; it's a disorder that apparently doesn't respond to medication, and they have previously reacted badly to medications that have been trialled; I'm seeing a psychologist regularly myself to deal with the pressure and get some feedback/backup. I have a supportive husband and family, but otherwise it's hard to know how to or who to talk with about what's going on. It's an uncommon enough disorder that you have to explain an awful lot about it before a conversation can even really start, and then you run into dangerous ground regarding the privacy of the person in question.

New Post: Re: Dissociative Identity Disorder Carers?

Hi @Former-Member, spoke to her on the phone on Saturday, saw her Sunday. She's got an appointment with the public mental health team early this week (today I think) so I'll hear back about how that went. Hoping it goes well.
She's still a bit "unsteady" but better than she was.

@Smc hoping things with daughter went ok.

Was also thinking it must be Hubby's b'day soon.

@Former-Member, Not quite as she would have liked. She was hoping for ongoing case management, but didn't get that. However, we have now got them willing to provide support when needed instead of tellling her to contact her private practitioners.

The local psych team comes across as seriously overstretched. I suspect the government could double the number of psych units in the state and any slack that created would quickly be absorbed. Which is a bit disturbing, on a number of counts.

Hubby's 50th has already happened, mine is due to happen later in the year, so there's going to be a combined Birthday and Silver-Plus-A-Bit Wedding Anniversary party in September. When our actual Silver Anniversary happened a couple of years ago, things were so high stress at the time that we didn't manage to organise anything. It was also the year that Mum turned 80, Older Daughter turned 21 and Younger Son turned 18... oh, and both sets of parents had their 50th Anniversaries. Not all of those events got big parties, but yeah.... everyone was under a bit of "event burnout" by the time our turn came around.

Another SH incident yesterday. Not too bad, but Daughter was fairly distressed about it. It started when she accidentally injured herself, but then the compulsion took over and she made it worse.

So we spent 3-4 hours in the emergency waiting room, and another hour or so with the nurse. Twas a busy day. All bays pretty constantly full. Got out with her a bit after 6... sooo tired.

She's worried and scared about it herself. I'm trying to work out if I can visit my parents' place next week. Today would be a good day to book tickets if I am, but I'm still not sure if it's a good time to be away. 😞

Could you take your daughter with you to mum and dads @Smc or would that be too much for her. (And you).

Re: New Post: Re: Dissociative Identity Disorder Carers?

@Determined, taking her to Mum and Dad's would not work at all. My Mum's tendency to sudden emotional meltdown seriously frightens Daughter, and she'd also find the current chaotic clutter of my parents' house hard to take. She also finds long trips stressful. Last time she had a "big city" psychiatrist's appointment, she asked me to travel down with her for support. She told me that she probably would have bailed out at the city interchange and gone back home on the next train if I hadn't been there. My parents' place is at least double the travel... maybe three times.

So I've booked the ticket today. Was tossing up between Mon-Sat or a slightly shorter Mon-Fri trip. I went for the shorter option. I think even that will test my limits at the moment, but any shorter really isn't worth it, given that the first and last days are travel plus bump in/bump out. There's no time for visiting or sorting on those days.
