Feel for you with your mum and dad's dynamic .... women of her generation had to respect the fact that their difficult men were their bread-winner while they raised the kids .... no bread-winner meant extremely hard life for mum and kids .... that's where MIL ended up when lost her dad to war and lost her mum to bread-winning to raise her kids with s roof and food ....

Knew I had to speak up for my sons and daughters re in-laws .... WH was with me once he realised, and could tak to him in depth about it ..., never expected it to rebound into him with e.d. take-over .... sigh .... like a different person .... but I know he's still in there somewhere and e.d. support services have said the same ..... he will come back, and in hindsight will appreciate that we stayed and fought for him .....

Like trying to bath an unwilling cat tho .... get a bit scratched up in the process sometimes ....

Its ok. @Faith-and-Hope. Hate to say it but a lot of any little tidbits or homilies etc I occass offer are from real Life. Like the painting in my brain won't name it, but mum outside in dark swinging self on hills swing crying. He had finally broken her. So I thought. Then she just stayed. And stayed. And ate it all up. Well that was 40 plus years ago..she was a church elder. Despite him. An excellent singer apparently. Despite him. The best cook and mother despite what he said about her and her relatives. Yet somehow at 92 he's still got the whip hand, daughter and son in law firmly in his camp.(weren't always although they always benefited) .. and he's holding court with them doing a curious mix of somehow how good she and her family somehow are while outright bagging other people .. just had to be away from there

Your mum established her own terms @TAB, and lived by them,ignoring the rest of the crisp to give you safe passage .... strong, brave woman .... ❣

Yeah ... limit your exposure to it @TAB ... it's one strategy for not letting it rule your life ..., and I'm sure your mum gets that ....

Think she just tried to have a life outside to be honest @fath-and-hope. And she not wanting to go back home after being put in home however that may be. I doubt much has changed between bad between them its just old and sad now. Realised he made way more money after retirement then he ever did working. Well ten years longer retired than worked in aust. Skimped, invested it, got lucky on property having bought 1st house at 49 then selling it 25 years later for 1000% gain etc. in todays world of money he is seen as a success, mainly from having receiving govt benefits for 2 people and denying her access to hers

Even after my FIL left MIL for one of her friends he had been carrying on with on the side, she still begged him to come back to her .... years later he did .... still living with the other one .... wtf ?? .... and she gave him coffee, caught up for lunch, showed him how happy and independent she had become (relatively speaking - joined at the hip emotionally to sons) and turned him down ❣
