Oscillation between two mind sets

Oscillation between two mind sets

Sometimes I feel like I’m on top of things and don’t feel like my trauma defines me and I don’t feel so ashamed and scared. Other times I want to hide from the world and feel like a **** (I’m not going to say the word here since I don’t want to trigger anyone) 😭, I feel so ashamed that I don’t want people to know

@tyme, I don’t even know anymore. Having complex mental health issues is hard. At the end of the day, my psych is the only one who knows me the best, I haven’t shared as much of my story with my other supports because I haven’t felt safe enough. I am afraid of being judged and misunderstood. I wouldn’t even say I fully trust my psych, but enough to say as much as I have. It is lonely for sure, but I’ve gotten used to it, I’ve gotten used to holding things by myself.

You may have gotten used to holding yourself together, but it's tiring. At some point, you just burn out. I wonder if that exacerbates your health conditions? @creative_writer

I hope and pray one day you will be released of the burden to feel you need to hold it together yourself.

@tyme, I don’t ever feel safe with people, it gets in the way of being completely open. I carry my trust issues and it’s hard to not carry my mum’s trust issues. I know I’ve gotten better with time at being more vulnerable, but I don’t think I can fully let my whole guard down yet. I still have a very long way to go

And you recognise that @creative_writer . You know you have work to do, so that's a start.

I don't know how old you are, but I know I really struggled in my earlier days. As much as I struggled, change didn't really kick in until I was about 33.

Despite all the therapy and support I had before that, nothing actually made a difference. Then somehow, something "clicked" and then it all fell in to place. I hope the same goes for you.

@tyme, I do feel the time ticking for me to turn 30. I do feel like I’m getting old lol. I feel middle aged already.

I think part of it was about getting bipolar under control. It is very hard to start processing trauma until you are stable enough. Yes, I may still get bouts of instability, but I’ve gotten better at recognising when it is coming on and when to take PRN. Trauma stuff will require a lot of psychological work. I am progressing slowly. I can finally say my heart no longer races when engaging in mundane conversation with others. My social anxiety was very bad, I think I got desensitised on placement. I was required to put myself out there and engage with both peers and other social workers.

I do feel like even though my sessions with my psych have been helpful and all, they are not frequent enough. I wish there were other supports I felt comfortable enough to share as much with but I don’t. I know one safer (even if I don’t feel 100% safe) person is better than nothing. I can’t say I could go to my pdoc and GP and talk as openly about my trauma history. I find it easier discussing suicidal ideation (which I thankfully haven’t had for a few days now) with them than trauma

Re: Oscillation between two mind sets

Hey @creative_writer just ruminating on some of the things you have written here. I think we have some similarities, it was extremely hard for me to talk to psychologists, I would pretty much lie to them about a lot of things because of the fear of being judged and being vulnerable I suppose. I was going to suggest maybe seeing a uni psychologist but you have already considered it. My first psych was a uni psych and they were good, and importantly free. Obviously just anecdotal, I joined a support group at unit through the psych and that was useful too.

I am 33 @tyme haha, I've had a long stint of improvement though but coincidentally this last year was an insane time for me in terms of managing mental illness. Ah hm, there were other things I wanted to say but I have forgotten. Well I will at least agree that mixed episodes are truly terrible, worst experience of my life easily.

Hang in there @creative_writer it sounds like you are doing all the right things, I understand it is exhausting though

That's so interesting to read @Acanthiza . I was 33 and it was one of the worst times with my MH, but also the beginning of recovery. For me, I felt it had to get to the worst before it got better... and since getting better, I haven't gone backwards since.

My early to mid twenties were definitely the worst stretch for me @tyme , with a lot of bad patches afterwards : /

I still get very nasty depression but the intervals are getting longer and longer I think between the very serious episodes. I've had to learn a lot but I will write all about that when I have enough energy to keep rambling away in my own thread.

@Acanthiza, I wish I could be more open and honest but I’m too scared. I’ve had bad experiences with professionals before too which doesn’t help. I feel trapped in it all, but I’m doing whatever I can, but it doesn’t feel like it’s enough. I hope your nasty depression episodes become easier with time💖
