Nothing feels real

Nothing feels real

I had a migraine triggered yesterday from barely sleeping and still recovering from it. I slept better last night, mind still feels very foggy. This morning I felt discomfort in my body, my mind went to when I used to feel it years ago. Then I noticed myself feeling distant, sort of floaty. I hope I can get through the day today with uni

@Jynx, the memories have caused so much pain. I thought I was getting better, I’ve lost my balance since the flashbacks came back. I know they come and go, but it’s hard sitting with the physical discomfort. It brings complex feelings of shame, fear and deep sadness.

I struggle to feel safe within myself and with other people. It’s hard. It has made the idea of pursuing romantic relationships anxiety provoking. Maybe it’ll take time, but it’s still hard to open up to people, being vulnerable is not something I feel comfortable with

Re: Nothing feels real

@creative_writer you are getting better! Setbacks do not undo progress. Recovery is never linear, and the return of the flashbacks does not mean you are back to square one. It makes sense you are feeling off-kilter, and normal to feel a sense of frustration at how this is affecting you. There is nothing to be ashamed of, you are experiencing a very normal pathway through healing. You're not alone in experiencing this kind of thing.

Being vulnerable is super hard when you've been through such traumas. It literally puts our survival system on high alert. Take it slow, little bit at a time, and the more you open up, the easier it gets. Sitting with discomfort and anxiety is always challenging, but it's a skill that can be practiced and eventually mastered. We never stop experiencing anxiety, but we get better at knowing how to endure, and not become overtaken by it.

You will be okay, I feel it in me bones. Sending you some hugs, friend 💜

@Jynx, physical flashbacks are gruesome in a sense that you re-experience physical sensations from trauma. I’ve tried reframing things in my mind and tried so hard to get to a point where I didn’t feel so much shame. I guess, I have to go back to doing that. I think I lost my way when the flashbacks returned. I got to a good place, but it’s like I’m going to have to do some of that work again. I know I have still come a long way, it took me years to open up in therapy because I felt so shameful and embarrassed. Cultural influences didn’t make things easier, my parents don’t discuss anything sexual openly and nor did I growing up

Re: Nothing feels real

@creative_writer I think shame is probably one of the most common responses to SA that I've seen. Probably cos, like you say, it is culturally such a taboo topic and there's still so much stigma around being able to be open about it. You did nothing to bring this on yourself, you did nothing to deserve what you went through, and you deserve to be able to talk about it without being shut down. And most of all, you deserve a life of peace and contentment.

Maybe you do need to do some of that work again... but think of it like this: in learning a new skill, repetition is key. This time around, the work will likely be easier. Take less time and energy. And you'll get better at it, so that if you get sideswiped by these feelings/flashbacks again in the future, you'll be even better equipped to cope.

I'm off for tonight, I hope that tomorrow is a lil easier on you hun. Thanks for being open with me, I'll catch you again soon 💜

hi @creative_writer just stopping by to see how you are going.

Hoping today is a little better for you

Re: Nothing feels real

@Jynx, it is true that there is a lot of stigma, even victim blaming. That’s why I stayed quiet at first, but it did build up. I felt like my psychiatrist at the time did suspect it even before I said anything. It is true repetition is often needed. I hope you were able to rest up last night 💖

@Snowie, I hope you are well 💖

I overpushed myself because I wanted to escape from my emotional pain, and now my viral symptoms are worse. I guess it’s an avoidance technique. I probably should’ve taken time off placement (even work from home is exhausting), but I did not because I felt like I needed to do it to stay sane

Re: Nothing feels real

Is there something you can do for yourself tonight @creative_writer or do you just need to rest?

Sometimes we just need to take time out for ourselves, especially if you've had such a stressful day.

Hey @creative_writer ,

Sounds so hard. Are you sick?

I've got a lot of people with COVID around me.

Please take care. I hear how much your emotional pain is affecting you.

Re: Nothing feels real

@tyme, yes I’m sick. I think guys are going around and my immune system is down, has been down for a while. I’ve constantly been getting sick since July ish. The thing is I know I need to rest but I feel like I need to stay distracted. Maybe I did this to myself, I probably shouldn’t have exposed myself to potentially triggering content today. I thought I would be okay. I feel so incapable
