Nothing feels real

Nothing feels real

I had a migraine triggered yesterday from barely sleeping and still recovering from it. I slept better last night, mind still feels very foggy. This morning I felt discomfort in my body, my mind went to when I used to feel it years ago. Then I noticed myself feeling distant, sort of floaty. I hope I can get through the day today with uni

That's tough @creative_writer . I know first hand how physical pain can affect one's mental health. There's such a fine line between resting up and having to keep yourself busy. Sounds like it's a real balancing act.

@tyme, I know it wasn’t very smart to do 7.5 hours shift with viral infection plus migraine, but it didn’t stop me. I guess I’m just hurting over what happened yesterday morning with flashback. I hadn’t sleep well and I was sick, I was extra vulnerable. Today, I pushed myself to go to a trauma informed care professional development even though I knew I had been struggling. I zoned out for part of it, and ended up doing admin stuff because I didn’t feel like watching the parts of the short video played during the event

Fair enough. I hope you were okay with the training @creative_writer . Did you get to debrief after?

Re: Nothing feels real

@tyme, I didn’t even though I know I should have. I didn’t even know who to debrief with at that moment, and I don’t trust people easily. I’ve tried so hard to keep my personal and professional life separate. I’ve only disclosed limited information about my personal life to my supervisor. I know she would be more than happy to talk to me if we arrange a time and she is really nice. I believe I skipped the worst part of it when I felt like it was getting too much. I attended virtually so it was easy to change tasks. I went back to it when it became easier, but even then, it wasn’t exactly easy still

Good to hear you found a way to manage. @creative_writer

Re: Nothing feels real

@tyme, I did what I had to in order to cope. I think when I read/or watch something about the feelings that are commonly associated with trauma, I sort of feel triggered. Graphic details can also be a trigger. There were no graphic details as far as I know, but it did touch on commonly associated feelings so I had to zone out then. I don’t need to be reminded of the reasons why I feel ashamed and unsafe (even though I’m safe)

Well if you feel able to at any time, it's good to debrief with someone @creative_writer . By doing so, it helps them to be more mindful of not just you, but others who may get triggered too.

You did what you could to survive - good on you.

@tyme, I’m sure there are other students with lives experiences. Lived experiences may make you more empathetic, but it is still a double edged sword. There will always be areas in social work I would not work in, I don’t think I could ever work in a SA specialised service. I am likely to encounter cases in our settings too, but I won’t be hearing SA stories all the time

@creative_writer I'm sorry I didn't respond last night but knew you were in good hands with tyme.

I hope you were able to rest last night, get some sleep and today looks a little brighter for you 💗💗

@Snowie, not need to apologise, Tyme was there. Today has been better, I’ve forced myself to rest up today. I hope today has been kind towards you 💖.

Though culture is getting a bit on my nerves right now. Can you believe relatives are looking for partners for us because they think we need to be married off soon because we are getting too old. I realise time is ticking till I turn 30, I’m closer to 30 than 20. I just haven’t met a guy who makes me feel safe
