Just checking in.

Just checking in.

I thought I'd start a discussion where we can check in with members and use this space to keep in contact. It's a space to be able to say how you really feel and it's a space for the good, the bad and the ugly moments in our lives.

Re: Just checking in.

I'm back. With a warning that this is a long post and a side note to say you reeeeeally don't have to read or reply to it!

Your week sounds like a lot to me @Teej. I can cope OK with one thing each day usually, but too many days of it in a row starts getting exhausting, emotionally, mentally and physically. I give you a medal for what you did. That's big time brave 🏅

I had to think about the question you asked. I'm going to take 'good' to mean solid/stable/strong etc. and I think I do have a pretty solid sense of self and identity. I know what my values are, what I want in my life (generally), how my experiences have shaped me, what I think are my strengths and weaknesses etc. I consider all of that to be parts of 'self' and 'identity'.

But (there's always a but) a diagnosis can and has made that kind of shaky and messed with that a bit. I'm thinking of my most recent addition of OCPD here. When that happened I wondered whether who I am, what drives me, how it comes about, how it presents etc is because it is me or because of faulty personality traits. I questioned whether my strengths were actually weaknesses, whether I really cared about things as much as I thought I did or whether my brain was just tricking me into thinking I did... I think the OCPD thing was especially hard hitting because it isn't a mood related disorder but a personality one. I find PD diagnoses pretty slippery for a lot of reasons, one being that it kind of says to me that a fundamental part of who someone is (their personality) is disordered, which doesn't sit well with me and I find it difficult to imagine how something like that wouldn't shake someone up. I guess that could be the same for a lot of diagnoses including neurodevelopmental disorders, but I have no experience with that to draw from. Curious to hear your thoughts on it.

I'm thinking I have probably reached the point with diagnoses where my care factor about what it may say about me is close to zero (at least that's where I am at with it today 😉). If part of who I am, even a fundamental part, is disordered according to a book, then so be it. I am who I am and there's no reason or need to change that, and I don't think I want to anyway. I do want to keep working on how to be who I am in a way that allows me to function better in the world though - that's the tricky, important bit to me.

I identity comes back to values often for me. It's about what matters to me and I what I care about in my life. My moods, thoughts, feelings, ideas etc. change but the deep values stuff rarely has or does. During a shaky moment the other day I spoke with someone about my 'centre' and how it can and does keep me anchored in the rocky waters and emotional storms. My centre is probably those values and my identity is strongly tied up in them. Knowing and holding on to that gives me a sense of stability even when everything else feels and is unstable. I could just be on a bit of a values 'thing' at the moment 😉 but I guess it has often been an important, grounding thing for me as they are always there, always mine and pretty stable.

I'm picking up on the diagnosis thing being something that's really shaking you up. Wondering what kinds of thoughts you're having around it at the moment? Sometimes I think labels and opinions and assessments etc. can add lots of 'noise' and it can be hard to sift through it and find yourself within it all sometimes. Is there anything you can see about yourself that has been stable and constant? Some values maybe? Just an idea and some food for thought if you'd like to take it (but feel free to throw it away too!).

Hope your day is going well ❤

(Ps I am sure somewhere this morning you asked me to write a novel to you yeah?! 😉😆:face_with_rolling_eyes:)

Re: Just checking in.

Yep I actually did ask for a novel and I’m glad I got one @CheerBear 😘.

My sense of identity and self has always been shaky. I think I have a notion of who I want to be but can’t ever seem to get there.

The thing that has thrown me is that my psych thinks I have adhd (without the h) and that explains everything. She wants to keep major depression as a diagnosis that is controlled through medication. She wants to take the pd away. The irony is since I’ve read a bit more about adhd I can see the overlap with disordered personality traits as well. The line is blurred.

Things like emotion regulation problems can be explained through adhd as can a few others. I think that one of the things that is going through my mind is that if it is not then what. It’s like pulling me apart again and then thinking there will never be an end to this.

She wants to medicate me for adhd. She feels like much of my anxiety comes from adhd. I am feeling so overwhelmed with it. I feel like the timing of this is hugely difficult with all that going on. My therapist thinks this is all destabilising at a time I need stability and predictability more than ever. She believes a change of meds at this point in time would be a risk.

For me its just feeling like like a minefield. It’s thrown my sense of self and identity into disarray again. I don’t feel like I have that stable core to guide me. I still feel like a different person everyday and that makes it so hard to strive for goals. My goals change with my mood and ??? (The weather who knows) often daily. It often feels like chaos in my brain.

Sorry for the ramble. I think I may have gotten off topic. I think I have lots of questions for others so I can find out how my brain is similar to others and how it is different. Maybe when I get a sense of that I’ll be able to find a sense of stability and self and identity. I think I’m ok with having something under the neurodiverse umbrella. I think the challenge is to find these bits and work on the good bits and the unhelpful bits.

It was this that my therapist helped put me back together on Saturday night. I think I was looking for answers in a diagnosis. She told me that what I have been experiencing in the last few weeks as far as she could see was trauma which floored me at first. I guess I can see it now but even trauma for me comes out differently :face_with_rolling_eyes:.

Hoping your fish are feeling a bit better today. I just got a call to say mine wouldn’t be here until tea time 😏. Be warned there may be more novels I ask you to write 🤗🤗😘

Re: Just checking in.

@CheerBear I need to respond further to your post. I lost sight of lots in my response. Life is very confusing at the moment. I know now is not the time. I also know that maybe some of this stuff has to come out with my psych or I’ll never come unstuck and will eventually suicide. Sorry for the heavy.

Im ok. Just very lost and sad and scared and alone with my thoughts.

Re: Just checking in.

I've been pondering our posts a bit today @Teej, trying to imagine how hard it would be to 'feel like a different person everyday', as I've heard you mention a few times before. I realised when I posted earlier that I'm probably lucky to feel an inside anchor of some kind. I think that maybe my most difficult times have been when that's not as easy to find and hold on to. I'm not sure. Either way I hear that it is hard for you and am piecing together what hard looks like for you. There's no need to be sorry for heavy. Listening, with others, as you share, and respecting that sometimes sharing here helps and sometimes it helps to share in places other than here.

Sending you mega hugs for your sad, scared and alone ❤

Re: Just checking in.

Thanks @CheerBear . I want to be able to share my stuff here but often when I do I become overly self conscious that I’m not like anyone else. Then that starts all the usual negative internal dialogue. I genuinely want people to share their experiences when I ask questions, and although it didn’t come across in my emotion filled post, I was so grateful for your answer. 💜🤗

Re: Just checking in.

I can see how it might trigger the self-conscious, 'different' feelings to hear of experiences that are unlike your own @Teej. I think if you were to get a bunch of responses to that question, you'd also get a bunch of different answers and some of them would be more similar to your experience.

Hope dinner was OK tonight ❤

Re: Just checking in.

You ok @CheerBear ?

Re: Just checking in.

I'm OK thanks @Teej. I had a pretty dodgy night last night with a brain that decided it really wanted to go for a run or organise the house at ridiculous o'clock, after it woke with a bang. I am struggling with tossy turny sweaty nightmares but I don't think there is much I can do about them at the moment aside from ride it out :face_with_rolling_eyes:

How are you going?

In response to: Re: Just checking in.

Re: Just checking in.

Probably going much the same as you @CheerBear . I have my psych this afternoon.

So sorry you are having those dreams again. Is this still on the back of a few things that happened recently with past relationships? Its ok not to answer too.

I think my reaction to stress has been :pile_of_poo: where I now have to finish cleaning up the not quite making it to the 🚽. I just need to disinfect and hope 🤞🏻 that it is just stress. I don’t feel sick.

I have lots to do re the house stuff which I’m still not coping particularly well with. And the feeling like a different person everyday is causing some distress still. Like you I guess I have to ride it out.

💜😊
