Re: I can’t find peace

@creative_writer Perfectionism and imposter syndrome can go hand in hand, and be very painful to experience. Is it something you're actively working on in therapy, or within yourself?

It can be helpful to explore it more deeply - understanding where it comes from, when it is coming up in your day-to-day, and what the underlying fears are that are driving it, for instance. I also found this lil online article about perfectionism and ways to overcome it, might be worth a read. Another one here.

Can be helpful to remember that we are all fallible, we all make mistakes, and we are biased to judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their actions - i.e. you might see someone appear to be really successful, but underneath they're as anxious as you are. Similarly, someone else may be looking at you and feeling that you're amazingly successful, whilst they feel inferior inside. We never really know. Same with impostor syndrome. We can feel like we aren't worthy of our successes, even though we wouldn't be where we are if we weren't worthy of them.

You're also in a new environment, learning a new skillset, maybe surrounded by people who have been there for ages. So they might make it look easy but it's cos they've been doing it forever. When I first started on the forums I was super critical of my posts, always asking for a coworker to read over things before I posted them, and felt like I wasn't doing enough. Nowadays it's like second nature to me cos I've been doing it for so long. But I still need help - I still ask my coworkers for input, I still feel like some posts aren't my best work, I still struggle with it from time to time. But I can imagine someone who is newer to forums might see me as being super successful and feel like they're incapable, but they're not. They're still learning.

Give yourself a break, remind yourself it's a learning process, that no one is perfect nor is perfection possible to achieve. And don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it.

@Jynx. I feel so ashamed of myself, I’ve had to cut days from 4 days a week to 3. My tutor is also going to see if it’s possible for me to have more supervision sessions because I’m really struggling. It’s also my fault I’m not coping

Hey @creative_writer ,

GO easy on yourself. You can only do what you can. I'm sorry things have been so hard.

Do you get extra support at uni?

Re: I can’t find peace

@tyme, I am not registered with student support but after talking to my tutor she thinks it's a good idea to have more supervision sessions for support during my placement. My task supervisors are not aware of the situation, feeling enormous pressure to improve my performance. I've just been stuck in survival mode during placement so I haven't been at my full performance capacity. It would help with burn out to cut back hours

I think it's a good idea @creative_writer . Get all the support you can. Hence it's good even to get the adjustments sorted out early. With adjustments, all can succeed - you included.

I hope you don't feel the pressure of having to do it all on your own.

Re: I can’t find peace

@tyme, sort of am feeling the pressure to do it on my own, but that's how I grew up. I'll be having extra external social worker supervision. Task supervisors have no clue what is going on, I haven't communicated with them, and I feel like I am somewhat being compared to the other social worker student that started earlier this year too and finishing soon. I am definitely the weaker one of us. I feel like I should have things all together but I don't. I straight up lie to people on placement that I am doing good because I am trying so hard to remain professional and not seem so emotionally impacted

I hope you get the support you need at this time @creative_writer . You deserve it. Remember, the people are there to help you pass. It is not because they want to you 'fail'. Reach out for the support.

Re: I can’t find peace

@tyme, if I was to be open to task supervisors that I’m struggling without details, I don’t want them to think I’m incompetent. I’ve learnt to keep my own stuff hidden from people because I’ve learnt even when people say they won’t judge, they often do

Why should I not relapse into SH?
