Need help with a complex situation with depression

Need help with a complex situation with depression

Hi,

I usually post on the lived experience forum as I have MI issues but have an issue I am struggling with relating to depression and anxiety with my son's girlfriend who lives under my roof. I am not sure how or if to intervene. It is causing me stress and affecting my mmental health lately too. She has not come out of her room for days and has been demanding of my son who is doing his last exams and needs good grades to do honours next year. They have lived here for about 4months and this would be about the 6th episode. She really has only had about two weeks of being ok. She won't seek help but says she wants my son to get a professional to contact her. I have talked to her about headspace but again she wants them to contact her. She was seeing a psychologist earlier this year but has stopped and has highlighted that she wanted the psychologist to ring her and make the appointments.

Her mood is currently affecting mine and I feel like I'm walking on egg shells, my emotions are starting to spike in unpredictable ways because of this situation too. I have trouble with emotion regulation as I have BPD traits but don't lash out rather turn them inwards. I am watching my son suffer and it's difficult when it's under your roof. He jumps to her every command.

I am am looking for advice to a) help her seek professional help. b) know how to effectively help her. I've been too scared to broach this with her and how I deal with my depression is very different to hers. C) know how to deal with it so it doesn't take me out.

I feel like a hypocrite with this all because I have had several serious episodes of depression and have a couple of hospital admissions during this time so I also feel like anything I say will be seen as the pot calling the kettle black.

Her family is aware of her MH issues but not of her current situation. I don't really have contact with them to ask for help. I guess if it wasn't under my roof I may not get involved but I am seeing it destroy her life and my sons in the process.

Im grateful for any advice.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Fending off the makings of a cold atm, so have turned down walking to the coffee bar tonight. Cuddled up in bed in jammies with Mountain Tea .... we are off somewhere else in c coulee of days .... and don't want to be unwell. This will use be a two day stint, but it's in a very cold, mountainous terrain, so a cold is not great ...

WH is starting to feel the strain of all this pinging around .... I have been able to get a few nudges in there to indicate that it's a bit OTT ....

He also believes that jogging on rough road at the spa town has given him sore feet .... I know compression fractures in the feet are one of the signs of over-exercising .... wondering if that's what is happening now ....

Time will tell.

Glad you're okay. Hope you can get a nap in later today ....

💜🌷

Think I could match you with that @Former-Member .... lol .... I have been doing them in every spare minute these last few days. Think I'm a bit overlooked with all the pinging around, and it's gphelping me keep my balance. Can't thank you enough for putting me onto them.

I can also tell they are sharpening my attention to detail - honing my painting skills without actually painting .... I think in colour, form, tone, shape ....

I hope your self care does fend off a cold @Faith-and-Hope. I definitely couldn't keep up the pace your doing. I hope one day I could but right now I need so much down time.

i found that with the online jigsaws that I was noticing colour more. The puzzles with snow intrigue me as snow can turn up all shades and tones depending on the light. I'm on an app that I buy in app purchase packs. I have bought lots of different country packs. I wait until they are on special for under $3 and buy them mostly but that's tens of hours of distraction for less than a coffee so that's my spending money on myself I can justify. I do 400 piece puzzles and they mostly take about just over an hour unless it's a tricky one.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

I'm just using a free online site at the moment, 100 pieces each one. Haven't timed it cos I'm using them as a cover while I'm on the forums in between.

While we are travelling WH has had to work out how to shuffle us around to fit in c/s time without anyone "noticing" ... although we all know what he's up to .... but as self-absorbed / regimen bound as he is, he began to notice how much time I am spending on my iPad and phone .... and there's only so much that communicating with family, friends, and the older kids in Aus can cover. Now he thinks I'm on the jigsaws constantly .... unless he's actually stalking my internet use, fully aware of my forum time, maybe even following my posts .... if he chose not to tell me, I wouldn't know.

Am I worried ? No. I think he is in too reactive a state for that scenario to be a reality. Reckon I would know all about it, and be standing in a scorched landscape by now.

Crosswords have been my other go-to.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Me thinks you're right about the scorched landscape by now @Faith-and-Hope. I've had to be really careful what I post lately too. I haven't really been able to divulge much. My kids know I'm on here and that I post a lot. They have access to my phone and iPad and know my passwords so it's useless hiding it. If they've followed it up I don't know either but like you I think I'd find out quickly if they'd read something they were unhappy about. Do you ever worry about how much time you spend on the forum? It's been a bit of a battle for me. I hope one day I feel like I've got that part sorted. I know I'm not the only one who thinks about it.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

No ... not worried about how much time I am spending on the forum. It's like a stress antidote in my situation, and part of my self-care. I am well aware that many would have come apart at the seams under a lot of the pressures I have carried forward in life, and "losing" my husband and family to this invidious hidden illness has been worse than all the rest put together. I am running a marathon here, and you guys are all part of my support team in a way that friends and family can't be until we get a break-thru ....

Even then, I'm staying .... 😊 .... but it will also justify the time I have spent here. It's been invaluable.

Look at how many hours people spend on screen time in their work places ..... well this is our work at the moment .... survival and recovery ....

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

I guess you are right @Faith-and-Hope. I have gained many pieces of my puzzle from the forum let alone the much needed support in crisis. I guess it's given me something too. I get to give on here in a way I'm struggling to in real life. And it's helping with confidence mostly.

Im going to nod off again for a bit. thanks for the chat and asking after me. I hope you sleep well tonight and knock that cold out of the park before it takes hold. Will catch you later 💜🤗
