Need help with a complex situation with depression

Need help with a complex situation with depression

Hi,

I usually post on the lived experience forum as I have MI issues but have an issue I am struggling with relating to depression and anxiety with my son's girlfriend who lives under my roof. I am not sure how or if to intervene. It is causing me stress and affecting my mmental health lately too. She has not come out of her room for days and has been demanding of my son who is doing his last exams and needs good grades to do honours next year. They have lived here for about 4months and this would be about the 6th episode. She really has only had about two weeks of being ok. She won't seek help but says she wants my son to get a professional to contact her. I have talked to her about headspace but again she wants them to contact her. She was seeing a psychologist earlier this year but has stopped and has highlighted that she wanted the psychologist to ring her and make the appointments.

Her mood is currently affecting mine and I feel like I'm walking on egg shells, my emotions are starting to spike in unpredictable ways because of this situation too. I have trouble with emotion regulation as I have BPD traits but don't lash out rather turn them inwards. I am watching my son suffer and it's difficult when it's under your roof. He jumps to her every command.

I am am looking for advice to a) help her seek professional help. b) know how to effectively help her. I've been too scared to broach this with her and how I deal with my depression is very different to hers. C) know how to deal with it so it doesn't take me out.

I feel like a hypocrite with this all because I have had several serious episodes of depression and have a couple of hospital admissions during this time so I also feel like anything I say will be seen as the pot calling the kettle black.

Her family is aware of her MH issues but not of her current situation. I don't really have contact with them to ask for help. I guess if it wasn't under my roof I may not get involved but I am seeing it destroy her life and my sons in the process.

Im grateful for any advice.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Always @Faith-and-Hope 😊. Just had some distractions and brain is on go slow. I just lost a big response to Apple 😔 In between S1 was messaging me so I know which country he is in at the moment. And the kids came home so I said hello, and I scanned and uploaded some overdue documents. Will respond to your post in a minute when I get over losing the other post 😬:face_with_rolling_eyes:

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

@Faith-and-Hope You are right on the money with what my therapist is trying to do with me. It's a slightly different framework but essentially you are on the money. The child modes I'm learning are my feelings which guide the show but it's my inner critic that rules it. I don't have space between us and often can't see her as being different or apart from me. So it's almost impossible for me currently to acknowledge what is happening then do something about it. It was supposed to be my homework, just recognising the inner critic voices but I failed again at that. Today has been a day of extreme self loathing. I've had my precious in my hand willing myself to take it but haven't. Inner critic pleading to I guess. The battle between good and bad in my brain has hit overdrive and it's destroying me but I haven't given up, just feeling battle weary.

The thing is @Faith-and-Hope im caught in a cross fire at the moment all the time. I was looking for help to take the battle out for a bit but it all seems too hard. I have my appointment with my therapist tomorrow so I'll talk to her. She was counting on my phams worker helping me with this too. Thanks for writing it. I'm not sure how to develop self compassion yet. It will take lots of work. My brain never stops and says 'that'll do donkey' (not sure if you're a shrek fan), it's never enough and this week I couldn't even get over the bar set at 1cm. Guess I'd better stop there.

How do you go with visualisation @Former-Member ?

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

I SUCK at visualisation @Faith-and-Hope because I don't have a minds eye. I cannot visualise anything including my kids. I can only think of them via photos of them where I know the colours etc because I've looked at the same image over and over and memorised it. I can only remember my grandparents by very specific photos. Having said that my therapist did say we are going to do some and I have to suck it in and try.

@Former-Member
I thought that might be the case ....but hear me out with this .... I think I have another key for you ....

Park up the rest of this post for another time if it's too much for you in this moment ...,

Okay. You have photos, I imagine, if yourself as a baby, as a 5 yo, as a teen .... so you have external visual images of your Inner Kids. By the ame process as for your kids and grandparents, that would indicate that you have memorised images of them / you.

Here's an activity for you, if you're up for it sometime .....

Dress yourself up as Loving Parent .... and that might be your "football mum" image, and take a selfie.

Then .... dress yourself up in some austere outfit that might best describe your Inner Critic .... and take another selfie .....

While that one might be hard for you, it will actually provide you with a visual image of that controlling part of your nature .... someone to look in the eye and tell what's what to. If you memorise that image, I am guessing it will start to help you identify when she is in control, and you can reach into your memorised images for Loving Parent .... actually take out your phone, bring up her image, and ask her to get back into the driver's seat.

❤️

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

When I first started with my therapist @Faith-and-Hope she tried to do a visualisation with me about a little lost girl which I struggled with but went along with. When she got to the part to now pretend it was me as a little girl I had an extreme emotional reaction and hated her because she would grow up to be me, not a reaction my therapist was counting on. I've moved on with a less intense emotion to that now. We haven't done much visualisation since then but she did tell me it's on the agenda.

I guess I need to try different things out but taking selfies is scary. I have no photos hardly of me either because I hated them all. There are very few of me and the kids as I always refused. I guess there has been lots of self loathing at every level for decades. Anyway you have helped me realise I need to stop hiding from all this too. It's uncanny that you are on very similar pages to my therapist. It guess maybe others can see what I can't.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Maybe not everyone @Former-Member .... I think it is a spiritual gift I have ....

That aside .... substitute .... tear some images out of magazines to use as your memory--visualisation basis .... which might give you a more objective distance to get past the self-loathing too.

Most people high in audio-sequential processing have great difficulty visualising @Former-Member .... but I believe it is possible to learn it to some degree ... it's the same in reverse for high visuals who struggle to take sequential steps and retain things they have heard properly .... giving them great difficulties in the school environment which is tailored more closely to that model of learning.

I have both ... but far stronger as a visual / spatial ....

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Sorry @Faith-and-Hope I just realised I didn't respond. I think I don't have a strength in either style of learning although would have leaned to visual spatial but I have lots of anomalies. Eg I could find a missing pixel in a picture but I struggle with perspective and light. I have a sense of design but not much else.
Anyway I do need to park it up for a bit. I don't know how therapy will go tomorrow. Everything is a little off centre for me at the moment. Normally I look forward to therapy because it always feels like I get to put another piece of the puzzle together but lately it's not been that way.
Anyway thanks for your input. I'm going to try to sleep although I'm not sleeping well lately. Think I might try some meds tonight. I hope your family rest up and feel a bit better and you do too. I have a busy day tomorrow starting early with S1 skyping from Estonia.
Good night 💜🤗😴
