Need help with a complex situation with depression
Hi,
I usually post on the lived experience forum as I have MI issues but have an issue I am struggling with relating to depression and anxiety with my son's girlfriend who lives under my roof. I am not sure how or if to intervene. It is causing me stress and affecting my mmental health lately too. She has not come out of her room for days and has been demanding of my son who is doing his last exams and needs good grades to do honours next year. They have lived here for about 4months and this would be about the 6th episode. She really has only had about two weeks of being ok. She won't seek help but says she wants my son to get a professional to contact her. I have talked to her about headspace but again she wants them to contact her. She was seeing a psychologist earlier this year but has stopped and has highlighted that she wanted the psychologist to ring her and make the appointments.
Her mood is currently affecting mine and I feel like I'm walking on egg shells, my emotions are starting to spike in unpredictable ways because of this situation too. I have trouble with emotion regulation as I have BPD traits but don't lash out rather turn them inwards. I am watching my son suffer and it's difficult when it's under your roof. He jumps to her every command.
I am am looking for advice to a) help her seek professional help. b) know how to effectively help her. I've been too scared to broach this with her and how I deal with my depression is very different to hers. C) know how to deal with it so it doesn't take me out.
I feel like a hypocrite with this all because I have had several serious episodes of depression and have a couple of hospital admissions during this time so I also feel like anything I say will be seen as the pot calling the kettle black.
Her family is aware of her MH issues but not of her current situation. I don't really have contact with them to ask for help. I guess if it wasn't under my roof I may not get involved but I am seeing it destroy her life and my sons in the process.

Essay time .... ❣
WH has an "addictive" personality .... his previous addictions were to workaholism, over-eating and media aka constant DVD's going in the background as he worked like white noise ....
These things were coping mechanisms, and have morphed to this current state of affairs instead. 😔
At times he has had great insight when we have tried to discuss his condition. He has basically said that he either has to be addicted to the lifestyle that was killing him, or this version, that is "super-healthy" (according to him) .... and that for him there is no in between ..... I told him his personality had changed .... he had brought his work persona home, why now and not before .... ? His answer - because BED took no effort .....he was a happy (morbidly) overweight person because there was no strain. Now he is under constant strain, like a lash to his back .... and under these circumstances he isn't happy, but has to live with it .... but it cued him in to the need to keep his discontent from impacting his relationships - actually not possible, but manageable .... but creating more strain in the process - which is where we are at now. 😔
I understand there is something in the spousal dynamic that can't be breached, at least not usually, in this denial stage .... the spouse either becomes an enabler, or an adversary in their disordered thinking .... guess which one I am ??! ....🏆🎉🎈
WH is going to need professional help to realise that there is an in between, and it iIS possible for him ..... the recovery stages can be part of our marriage recovery, but I have been told two things ..... there is nothing more I can do than what I am already doing .... and that his regimen is not sustainable. Our recovery is waiting behind, and dependent upon, his recovery .... but I will then become support person no. 1 for that .... 😳
He will need to be taught that the principles behind what he is doing are sound, but he has overshot the mark ..... he wil need to exchange 8 of his weekly jogs for other non-sporting (non-athletic) activities and half his gym workouts. 🏋>> 🎣🎼🎭
He will need to be coached out of Orthorexia by being supported to eat foods he is now fearful of, and reset his understandings of normal eating. 🍤🍳🍞🧀🌯🍷🍿🍣🍗
He will need to be advised by an e.d. Physio or trainer about how he is overtaxing his system with the weights and gym cardio and what the consequences are of that, so he can not only find the balance but understand how it works and why it's necessary. .... 👍
The c/s is something else again .... probably needs an e.d. specialist, and the recovery is likely similar to treatment of Bulimia even though it's not the same .... it's the same mindset and principle. 😔
The OCD stuff I am still struggling to understand, but there are people for whom this is their only area of treatment, so there are specialists and treatments available .... not on my immediate radar, but the cameras, phone tracking, touching potential germy things stuff is inhibitive enough of our family life that that sure needs sorting too ! ⌚️📷🗜 And his panic about time control is all part of the addictions / phobias I think.
I have no doubt at all that exchanges and goal-setting are a part of the processes towards recovery, but it is so far beyond me to even try to suggest anything, and being the adversary spouse would see it shot down anyway ..... 😔
Coming to terms with all of this was where I was at last year in the wake of our new status quo. Your feely senses are reading the problem and the solution, as do mine ..... just can't actuate it for him which is the heart-ache I have had to mute with all my power. 💞
It's still a long road ... but I am collecting a basket of pretty stones along the way .... to keep it from being all about the illness .... and these will become our touchstones towards wellness. I am speaking metaphorically of our travels, family movie nights, games nights, etc
❤️

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression
Sorry to hide away here but there is something seriously wrong with me @Faith-and-Hope. Not as in physical but completely bloody mental. I cannot achieve a goal to save myself. Even the smallest one I'm set to self sabotage. Wanted to write on the forum but too ashamed. I'm feeling ok and only had a small list of things to achieve, the main one is get up and shower, brush my hair and clean my teeth. I haven't done any of them even though I feel human. But I've known all day I was meant to but I let my brain take over and analyse everything all day and be on the forum and my really important goals left again. How am I ever going to reach some kind of normal!!!

I just realised that you are sick and I probably just needed to vent. Angry with myself 😡 and trying to cope with that in a more appropriate way, on the edge of winning and loosing with it. Not able to let stuff go much at the moment. I feel ok but then put so much pressure on because I feel ok and then I implode. How do I break this cycle?

Oops. I become really intense before I implode (current phase). And this is me not calling on you because you are unwell. 😳😬

In baby steps @Former-Member .... run raids on your hygiene needs like running raids on the housework ... take your iPad to the bathroom and clean your teeth as you read posts ... who cares if it takes you half an hour ? Box ticked.
Keep a pack of wet-wipes handy and give yourself a clean-up instead if a shower sometimes .... a reasonable standard of hygiene can be kept this way.
The forums are a panacea for me at the moment, and I have accepted that that is okay. It will all settle into place over time, you'll see .... you are gaining stability by being here, and that will develop into your outer world.
And it's not "hiding out" here .... how many on the LE forum are aware of my Need a Shoulder thread ? I chatted there with Tawney at one time when she was having a troubled dynamic on the LE side ....
Btw ... about to post on NaS that WH's jog lasted 5mins .... he couldn't do it .... and still ate a Spanakopita anyway .... gave his second one to me .... yum ❣

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression
Well @Faith-and-Hope i have nothing right now. Feeling a little emotional and confused and my brain has been like a high speed train (a runaway at times) I will try to put everything behind me and start again tomorrow. I have been feeling like a freak today for a whole heap of reasons, back to not belonging anywhere stuff, that I'm too different from everyone else in all the bad ways, wouldn't mind if it was something good to be unique at. But I'll try to stop that record for a bit now. I have one more post to make and then I might try to turn off from here for a bit.
Interesting that WH found his limits 🤔😊 May you have more breakthroughs soon.
I hope your cold eases up soon. Mine didn't last long at all luckily.
Sending grateful and appreciative hugs as always 💜🤗💐

Keep working on getting that Inner Critic into a back seat @Former-Member ..... ❤️💕
Watched The King's Speech last night. Have you seen it ? It centres on the effects of distant and overbearing parents from the viewpoint of recovery.
I dozed for a while just now .... and woke to hearing WH arguing with MIL that she has to eat something more than a pitiful amount of salad if she expects to get well from this flu ..... !! Ummmm .... ?! She's only doing what he has been ....
Wonder whether that has impacted too .... the e.d. seemed to have created a shell around WH's sensibility, and I think Stage 2 is the breaking down of that shell and a re-dawning of sensibility ....
