Need help with a complex situation with depression

Need help with a complex situation with depression

Hi,

I usually post on the lived experience forum as I have MI issues but have an issue I am struggling with relating to depression and anxiety with my son's girlfriend who lives under my roof. I am not sure how or if to intervene. It is causing me stress and affecting my mmental health lately too. She has not come out of her room for days and has been demanding of my son who is doing his last exams and needs good grades to do honours next year. They have lived here for about 4months and this would be about the 6th episode. She really has only had about two weeks of being ok. She won't seek help but says she wants my son to get a professional to contact her. I have talked to her about headspace but again she wants them to contact her. She was seeing a psychologist earlier this year but has stopped and has highlighted that she wanted the psychologist to ring her and make the appointments.

Her mood is currently affecting mine and I feel like I'm walking on egg shells, my emotions are starting to spike in unpredictable ways because of this situation too. I have trouble with emotion regulation as I have BPD traits but don't lash out rather turn them inwards. I am watching my son suffer and it's difficult when it's under your roof. He jumps to her every command.

I am am looking for advice to a) help her seek professional help. b) know how to effectively help her. I've been too scared to broach this with her and how I deal with my depression is very different to hers. C) know how to deal with it so it doesn't take me out.

I feel like a hypocrite with this all because I have had several serious episodes of depression and have a couple of hospital admissions during this time so I also feel like anything I say will be seen as the pot calling the kettle black.

Her family is aware of her MH issues but not of her current situation. I don't really have contact with them to ask for help. I guess if it wasn't under my roof I may not get involved but I am seeing it destroy her life and my sons in the process.

Im grateful for any advice.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Thank you @Faith-and-Hope😘 Was stressing about that. Haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure how I am. I'm just really confused over lots of things. I'm trying to work out what comes next. I'm trying to work out what to put in my life so I can push out some of the bad. Not doing such a great job just now of managing to complete goals. I'm soooooooo scatter brained. I'm trying to work out how to do the forum because I'm messing it all up at the moment. I need to work out how to do it much better and find a balance which I've not managed at all since I started. I hate that I'm hiding away over here but I'm often I get all messed up when I get to post over there. I've been thinking of posting about it in another thread to help get some clarity

How are you going? I saw you haven't sleep much lately 😬

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

I have been sleeping in fits and starts .... but it's adding up to a decent amount usually ... ✅

Have had some "iPad >> Face" moments .... lol .... ❎

S2 is sleeping in the next room and has come down with a cold (my cold ?) so he is coughing thru the night which hasn't helped, and he is wonky with his day / night balance again at the moment .... 😳:face_with_rolling_eyes:😔 .... ❎ .... that will need sorting again when we're back.

He did toy with the idea of seeing a psychologist when we return .... I think that would be a good thing ... ✅

When I have woken thru the night I have caught up on the forum then drifted back off to sleep .... ✅

I'm feeling very restless tho .... have written about the cause a bit on my Need a Shoulder thread just now ... thought it needed a top-up. Have had some intense convos with MIL in the last few days which is probably the real cause .... has stirred up my feelings as much as I am trying to keep them muted, because it has involved giving a recap of events past. She had continued to critically question the kids behaviour (source of WH's over-active Inner Critic) and I have taken the huge risk of spelling things out for her in terms of where we have been these last few years. It's very difficult for her to come to terms with, of course, but I think reason is beginning to overwrite her idolisation of her son, especially as I have repeated how much I love him despite everything that is happening, and she has realised that it hasn't all become precarious recently .... which had been her impression .... and that I am not the one driving this .... which had been her presumption - informed by WH ....

Sitting on my hands again now .... bracing for a fall-out that may or may not eventuate ... or may leak out over time.

WH has booked himself to return here for about 7 weeks in March-April .... which answers one question you posed a few weeks ago .... he has to re-do a large chunk of the renovation work that was mis-managed on a family property in our absence .... but MIL indicated that WH has heard something via the grapevine .... so while no scorched earth at the moment, he is upset with me over something that has come back to him.

It will all come out in the wash. Things like that were always going to be part of this course. Without the big-picture perspective that he is still blind to, these things will contribute to making me look like the bad guy ....

Btw .... I think you do the forums well. You are working with mi issues, and part of that is enabling others to remain committed to the forums because we don't have to be on our best behaviour here all the time .... it's part of the integrity and authenticity that we will spin out ... won't always get things right ... I'll have our melt-down days ... will rebound .... have perseverance, compassion, self-compassion, learning lessons from our life-circumstances, mi's, carer roles, and shared advice and wisdom ....

Please give yourself more credit .... it really is your Inner Critic who needs to take a back pew and let everybody else find a voice.

Hugs .... 🤗💜💕 ,... many hugs ....

Sorry @Faith-and-Hope. Just had to drive my son to training 30 mins away. Will respond and read your other thread soon. Have to let the dog out for a run first. I'm here for the next two hours now :face_with_rolling_eyes:

There's another couple of things ticked on your "done" list today .... 🎉

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Have been lazing in bed this morning @Former-Member .... a rarity here for me .... but I have been asking the kids to get up by 10am, so that becomes my benchmark too ....

WH is out jogging I expect, and will return for a shower then coffee-catch-up downstairs with rellies .... I sometimes miss that for my walk, but will join them this morning .... have been playing backgammon the last three nights at the coffee bar with WH in the absence of S2 (cold) and D3(monthly cramps, pulled shoulder) so will go for the coffee time this morning, then walk to my park cafe.

Will keep an eye on my phone for you, but will have space and wifi to answer at the park cafe.

❤️

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

@Faith-and-Hope. I don't envy your position at all. You know I think it hurts more now that our kids are adults when we get criticism because it's a judgement that we failed. I've learned, lots through you, that while they are living under your roof the opportunity to parent is still there. There is no finished product at 18 but they need to want to change in order to take much on from us. WH and MIL will tread on dangerous territory if they push there agenda on them. Slowly and gently is definitely the way to go.

I've been thinking about WH and I guess the first time I came to understand the situation I was in was from the perspective of addiction. I gained way more from the addiction sites than anything. The hardest part was I found a site that was fabulous and the founder talked honestly about it and it was so scary but so good to see it out in the open. Then one day I realised he hadn't contributed for a couple of years and I researched to see he had suicided which devastated me. I know you'll appreciate that falling off the wagon in this case has devastating effects not just on oneself. I know this is not WH but the more I hear from you I guess I feel that much of this is addictive behaviours too, I guess there must be lots of cross over with this. Maybe that's a way MIL could handle it better. And that once an addiction affects one from functioning properly it is a disorder. I'm not sure but I think a disorder is only diagnosed when one's behaviour is significantly impairing their ability to function in everyday life. I'm only relating it to my experiences and may be way off with it.
I really wished mine would have been able to talk about it honestly without covering at every turn. I think it will be really hard but as this comes to a head I hope that all the skills you have will bring out the real and very needed honest conversations. I have total faith in you that you'll be able to manage this part. I had absolutely no skills with this which I now know why, emotion regulation is imperative for these conversations to take place. It's no wonder we didn't have the real conversations that we needed to. Please know in my case mine was very honest in the admitting to his past but terrible at owning any of his continuing behaviours or making real changes. I guess I never helped him in the way he needed either.
I can imagine that it's beginning to feel like you are being slowly dragged into a vortex that you know once pulled in is going to take great strength to pull you all out free safely.
I'm a bit worried that this post is not relevant to you and I hope it's ok. Thinking of you and hoping there are steps towards a resolution of some sorts. Lots of hugs 💜🤗💐

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

@Faith-and-Hope. I was just wondering have you thought about what WH could possibly swap his unhealthy addictions/crutches with? It just dawned on me that I think often there is using the gym as a healthy way instead of using other vices which I just realised is quite problematic. Just thoughts.

Re: Need help with a complex situation with depression

Sorry for the first post @Faith-and-Hope. I think I overshared but I have never been able to talk about this with anyone. Lately it's raised its head a bit but not necessarily in a bad way but more of a scientific curious way. I'll try to stay on topic better in the future. 😜🤗😘💐
