Acedia

Acedia

When I first looked at the etymology of 'depression' I thought: gardening. As a self sufficient food grower, it makes sense: you press the seed down (into darkness), let it break free from there... Some rain. Some sun. Await the harvest...

As I consider the word today, I think Abiram, and Korah, and honeycomb geology - where the earth itself is undermined with hollows and caverns that ultimately become sink holes...

It feels like I could be a seed pressed down into one of those. A witless seed inside a sink hole.

And the cleverness in me says: "Great...then I shall have deep roots!"

But this space, yet, is a bottomless pit.

And the cleverness in me says:

"Great...then I shall be a wing-ed seed, and fly from here!"

But in this space there is, yet, no wind.

"Then I shall go on plummeting 'til I reach the mantle of the earth, and in the molten fires will I burn"

And the cleverness in me says:

"Great...then I shall become the phoenix at last!"

But in this space there is, yet, time. It is a boa constrictor. Wrapping a fawn that ate the seed that lives and dies in darkness.

Re: Acedia

I have just watched Back Roads on ABC. It was on Cygnet in the Huon Valley. So beautiful! Are you in that vicinity, @Kyle1?

hi @Historylover

Yes, that very town

Re: Acedia

Lucky you, @Kyle1. It's gorgeous. Did work take you there? It's a long way from hot NSW!

P.S. I thought it might be best if I anonymized your town. I'll put it back if you wish.

Re: Acedia

oh, it doesn't bother me @Historylover

I think I've mentioned cygnet before...

Came down here when I left social work. Bought a small farm and started growing food and homeschooled.

Yes, the Huon Valley is gorgeous. And cygnet is a great community.

If I were to be presumptious, I do believe you'd like it.!

Re: Acedia

we've just came home from a wonderful night out.

The girls went to their first "May Ball" and danced the night away to their hearts delight.

My son and I took in a live act across the road at the Cafe playing Appalachian blue grass. We shared a couch with a lovely couple and made friends. It's been a really nice day.

How have you been my friend @Historylover ?

Re: Acedia

So pleased you have had such a nice night @Kyle1. Are you still home-schooling? I'm sure I'd like Cygnet. It sounds like you've found your forever home.

Re: Acedia

yeah, I hope so @Historylover ... if I can, I sure would like to sink roots here.

No. I don't home-schooling any longer. I'm a single parent now, and two of my three children have reached the age where the limits of what I can offer as an educator are apparent... I.e: they're learning things like algebra now, and i can't teach that. What's more, they are soaking up and liking (most times) the social aspect of mainstream school and there's a lot of learning taking place there that can't easily be drafted and schemed in a curriculum.

overall, they're liking it, and I'm glad to have found them a good school so close by.

It's a sunny Saturday here now. Everyone is sleeping in. How is your day shaping up?

I'm just beginning to enjoy reading again. And walks by the estuary.

Hi @Kyle1🙂 , I don't feel like I've gotten much chance to speak to you lately, uni has taken over my mind, assignment is due in two days 😬. I hope today goes well for you. What have you been reading?

Re: Acedia

If I had my time over again, @Kyle1, and had the education and hind-sighted wisdom I now have, I would have liked to home-school my children. I just don't like the schooling systems they were exposed to, but you have to take what is available. I would like to have done so much so very differently, but everything was so different then. Everything and everyone is a product of their time and place. Yes, you do have to ensure plenty of social exposure as well. Smaller schools?

One of my recent teachers also lived in Tasmania, and also home-schooled. Perhaps it is more usual there for some reason. More relaxed, more environmentally aware, a greater sense of community?

We are having 17-18 degrees today and cloudy. Rather chilly but I am wallowing in my new fleecy jackets. Such a treat!

I'm just 'taking care of business' at the moment.

I hope you and yours do get to settle in there, @Kyle1. It really sounds like it offers a quality of life worth having.

Re: Acedia

Hi @creative_writer Good morning 🙂

Yes, I know you've been occupied with a lot and I reckon you've been doing your best to tend to it. Are you happy with your efforts? It sounds like you really are fighting for yourself and staying the course...

I, myself, haven't felt like I've had anything useful to say, so I've felt kind of quiet. Broody.

I bought myself a book a couple days ago and, unlike the past six months, I am actually able to focus long enough to read a pages or two without staring blankly at my own dismay!

It's a book of Rumi poems.

Besides your remaining assignment, have you anything planned for this Saturday? ...
