My Place

My Place

Hi guys,

I just wanted to have a thread where I could talk about things that make me happy without bothering anyone else.

So on Sunday a week ago I planted some seeds into a metal tub. Some veggie seeds. Carrots, garlic chives and although it’s not the season for it I threw in some cucumber seeds.

Well yesterday, only a week after planting I noticed my first little green shoot. Then today, there are a bunch of green shoots. Funnily enough I think it’s the cucumbers that have come up first. I may have to make a cloche to help them grow in the cooler weather. The tub is sitting on a concrete path so hopefully that will help keep the soil a bit warmer. I moved them a bit more into the sunshine today as we noticed that the carport was casting shade on them quite early in the afternoon.

I am so happy to see their green little faces pushing up from under that dark earth. Gives me hope in all things. I love to watch things grow. It makes me happy to think that I have played a part in that.

Every day I water them and have a chat with them. How are you today my seeds? I hope that you will grow soon! Now I can encourage them to grow bigger and stronger.

I can’t wait to set up my other veggie garden and grow more things. I am especially looking forward to planting my tomatoes come spring.

Holy moly @Oaktree! you've become a veggie pro so fast! It's unbelievable! Your patch sounds just amazing.

I think the world is conspiring to get me into veggies. Ive had your update, a tour of dad's patch yesterday, and a mate sent me a video of hers! So I went and bought some seedlings. Just lettuce and herbs, I'm still wary after the possums ate my entire veggie patch last time haha! But I'm very excited about them. Thanks for the inspiration! I think I must have a lemon tree now too...

My tag did not work either, but I eventually looked for you. I saw your photos on Sophias thread. An inspiration. My vegies are doing alright, but small potatoes ...lol

Hi guys, good to see you all passing through here. Long time no see. I have been checking the forums daily but haven't posted much recently. Did you get into any gardening @LeChuck ?

@Appleblossom I would love to see some pictures of your garden. I don't know what happened @TAB but this post went up prematurely. I only noticed because I was having trouble adding my pictures.

I have been busy in the garden. It makes me happy. This week I picked some young beetroot and enjoyed them roasted. They were yummy and I know that they were chemical free. The only imputs were manure, compost and water.

At the beginning of Spring I put in 4 new raised garden beds in my front yard. I planted

1) turnips and beetroot

2) lettuce and strawberries

3) tomatoes(planted too closely together), capsicums and eggplants

4) corn

Let's see if I can add the photos now? Nope it's saying the pics are too big. Oh well I guess no pictures.

Anyway I also have a huge cherry tomato plant growing that came up all by itself with like a million baby tomatoes on it. I have already picked half a dozen off it. I have several rhubarb plants which are doing well, some asparagus which is in its infancy and can't be picked for another couple of years. The pumpkins and melons out the back are doing well and have flowers on them. I noticed the first little baby pumpkin on my Queensland Blue today. I dragged hubby out to look at it as I was very proud lol. I also have 13 volunteer tomato plants that came up in very poor sandy soil so I dug them up and put them in pots in compost. Yesterday I dug in some manure and compost into the bed they came from so I will replace them back there in about a week. I am going to plant some beans once my corn is bigger because I will use the corn canes as a trellis, I am also planning to plant a couple of zucchini plants and some more lettuce. All my lettuce is getting big and is now ready to eat so I need to plant a succession crop. Sorry I couldn't post they pictures folks, you will have to use your imaginations instead. Overall I am really enjoying my garden, it's my happy place. I am also enjoying volunteering at the children's hospital even though my psychiatrist advised me not to. It just goes to show that although they mean well they don't know everything. Well I would love to hear back from you all. Please drop me a note. Hoping that you are getting well @tonys

I've been thinking about how you are going @Oaktree . Hope you are okay. I remember you posting at one stage that your hubby went to work so you were a bit lonely.

Re: My Place

Hi @tyme

Please go back up and read my full post. It posted prematurely,

Yes I have been a bit lonely whilst hubby is at work. I am not used to being by myself and I don't know what to do to pass the time. I guess I could always clean, the house is always a mess but understandably that idea is not that attractive. I do have things on during the week and I do feel quite busy but I guess I just need to get used to my own company.

Thanks for leaving me a note. It's lovely to hear from you.

Re: My Place

@TAB

Maybe this year you should just plan your garden. Then in winter when the ground is softer you could dig the ground over and prepare the beds for spring. Gardening is not a very cheap exercise. I spent almost $30 on 6 bags of cow manure yesterday. Luckily some friends gave me their coupons for free compost from the council so I used 12 bags of that yesterday. I think the soil in South Australia will be better than the sand we have here but you may have to contend with clay? Not really sure. If you have clay you need to dig in plenty of organic matter so this year start a compost pile. You can compost anything that was once living including paper and cardboard. Good luck with your planning. That will be something that you can spend time thinking about.
