My Place

My Place

Hi guys,

I just wanted to have a thread where I could talk about things that make me happy without bothering anyone else.

So on Sunday a week ago I planted some seeds into a metal tub. Some veggie seeds. Carrots, garlic chives and although it’s not the season for it I threw in some cucumber seeds.

Well yesterday, only a week after planting I noticed my first little green shoot. Then today, there are a bunch of green shoots. Funnily enough I think it’s the cucumbers that have come up first. I may have to make a cloche to help them grow in the cooler weather. The tub is sitting on a concrete path so hopefully that will help keep the soil a bit warmer. I moved them a bit more into the sunshine today as we noticed that the carport was casting shade on them quite early in the afternoon.

I am so happy to see their green little faces pushing up from under that dark earth. Gives me hope in all things. I love to watch things grow. It makes me happy to think that I have played a part in that.

Every day I water them and have a chat with them. How are you today my seeds? I hope that you will grow soon! Now I can encourage them to grow bigger and stronger.

I can’t wait to set up my other veggie garden and grow more things. I am especially looking forward to planting my tomatoes come spring.

Hi guys,

On Saturday with some help from people from Church, I installed 4 new raised garden beds. I put them in the front yard because it faces north and gets lots of sun. I was hoping to fill them with free compost from the council but they didn’t give us as much for the coupons that came with the rates as I was expecting. So we half filled them with sand from the garden. Topped them up with beautiful looking compost and then added triple c mulch to the top. Oh and I put a couple of bags of cow manure in the top of each one under the mulch. It has been raining the last couple of days which is really good because it will settle the soil in the garden beds and stop it from dropping later. I am going to leave them two weeks before planting anything to make sure that the manure doesn’t burn roots. I have a lot of seeds to put in and I am really looking forward to getting going.
I may have to protect the garden beds a bit from the sun in summer but I will work that out when the time comes. Looking forward to some home grown veggies.

Re: My Place

sounds very productive and rewarding @Oaktree I've still done nothing . Well got 2 huge pine trees cut down so thats a long term fix for soil over fair portion of back yard, bigger one was 25metres high. cost me $5000 for 2 trees. was cheap I think

@TAB

Oh my gosh 5k is a lot of money. It should open up your yard to some more light though. Good luck with your yard work. Make a plan and take small steps.

Wow! Good Job @Oaktree

I enjoyed tuscan kale, various lettuce this week, and looking forward to colourful red swiss chard. Small crop but still fun and healthy.

Re: My Place

Dayam @Oaktree you at such a gardening success story! I love it. We're ploughing through the last of my dad's home grown broccoli and cabbages at the moment, and it's almost time to get some tomato seedlings started in the polytunnel! I'm hoping to do a bit of work on my own patch this summer instead of just nicking veggies from mum and dad's 😉 great to hear from you, hope everything is going great for you! xxx

Well done @Oaktree you'll be busy sowing summer crops I guess. My celery and rocket are slow.
