My Place

My Place

Hi guys,

I just wanted to have a thread where I could talk about things that make me happy without bothering anyone else.

So on Sunday a week ago I planted some seeds into a metal tub. Some veggie seeds. Carrots, garlic chives and although it’s not the season for it I threw in some cucumber seeds.

Well yesterday, only a week after planting I noticed my first little green shoot. Then today, there are a bunch of green shoots. Funnily enough I think it’s the cucumbers that have come up first. I may have to make a cloche to help them grow in the cooler weather. The tub is sitting on a concrete path so hopefully that will help keep the soil a bit warmer. I moved them a bit more into the sunshine today as we noticed that the carport was casting shade on them quite early in the afternoon.

I am so happy to see their green little faces pushing up from under that dark earth. Gives me hope in all things. I love to watch things grow. It makes me happy to think that I have played a part in that.

Every day I water them and have a chat with them. How are you today my seeds? I hope that you will grow soon! Now I can encourage them to grow bigger and stronger.

I can’t wait to set up my other veggie garden and grow more things. I am especially looking forward to planting my tomatoes come spring.

Re: My Place

Thanks @Meowmy

Yay @TAB glad to hear that you finally mowed. Did you borrow a mower? Every part of an oleander is poisonous so you may want to pull that out? Good to know regarding the rhubarb! I also planted 24 garlic cloves a few weeks ago. So far 15 of those have germinated. Hopefully will get some decent garlic out of those. I am going to store them and replant them again in March. They were a nice big WA grown purple kind from the green grocer’s. Good luck taming your garden! Sounds like a big job. Consider growing your lemon trees in pots to start with especially if you are not exactly sure where you will want them permanently.

Re: My Place

That’s great @Dimity

I myself don’t like celery so I don’t think I will grow any of that, although maybe my husband would eat it. I am waiting for spring to come to plant out my flower seeds. I bought 15 packets of assorted bee attracting flowers. I am going to mix them in a bowl and then just sprinkle them in a border garden that runs along my fence. I am hoping for a beautiful wild type display of colourful flowers. So excited for this, hopefully they grow!

Re: My Place

Mixed flowers will be lovely @Oaktree . I planted Iceland poppies and linarias (like tiny snapdragons) but none came up.

Re: My Place

  • That’s good news @TAB re second hand mower. Now you will be able to mow as much as you can be bothered to!
  • Yes large pots for your lemon trees. I have a dwarf eureka in a smallish pot at the moment but when it grows a little I will repot it into a bigger pot. Aldi are going to be selling little trollies that you can move your pots around on soon, I must check the catalogue and see exactly when. I am definitely getting one!

Re: My Place

So I woke up to the news on Facebook telling me that 3 of my Church friends were giving me their council compost vouchers. Now I will have enough vouchers for 8 cubic metres of compost which will be more than enough to fill my 5 raised garden beds, plus enough to put down in the side garden for the flowers. Also going to store some in my compost bins for future use. Happy Days.
I also had someone volunteer their husband and trailer to go pick it up. They are going to organise the missionaries to help out. I love it when a plan comes together!

Re: My Place

8 cubic metres is a lot @Oaktree, there'll be a few trailer trips.

Tonight I had fresh thyme from one of my pots

Hey guys,

Last week was my husband’s 63rd birthday. We took a trip to York and stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast. We took a leisurely drive there. Stopped to have coffee and cake in the Swan Valley and then a further stop at the lakes for a pie and a drink. When we got to the B&B we had a lie down to rest hubby’s poor sore leg. As you might remember he had a knee replacement 4 weeks ago. Then we went out to dinner for his birthday celebration. We booked at the Imperial Homestead in York. I had the braised lamb shanks, hubby had the crispy skin salmon and our friend had garlic prawns. Then we all had a warm sticky date pudding. I had them put a candle in hubby’s dessert. The next day we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast of fruit salad, flavoured yogurts and poached eggs on toast along with coffee but there was so much else on offer. It was all included in the price of the accommodation which was only $150. There were also complimentary things on offer in the room including chocolates, little cakes, beer, port, wine, soft drinks and the usual tea and coffee. We had such a lovely time that we booked there again for two nights for our anniversary in October. This year marks our 30th wedding anniversary. It was a lovely trip and hubby had a happy day.
