My Place

My Place

Hi guys,

I just wanted to have a thread where I could talk about things that make me happy without bothering anyone else.

So on Sunday a week ago I planted some seeds into a metal tub. Some veggie seeds. Carrots, garlic chives and although it’s not the season for it I threw in some cucumber seeds.

Well yesterday, only a week after planting I noticed my first little green shoot. Then today, there are a bunch of green shoots. Funnily enough I think it’s the cucumbers that have come up first. I may have to make a cloche to help them grow in the cooler weather. The tub is sitting on a concrete path so hopefully that will help keep the soil a bit warmer. I moved them a bit more into the sunshine today as we noticed that the carport was casting shade on them quite early in the afternoon.

I am so happy to see their green little faces pushing up from under that dark earth. Gives me hope in all things. I love to watch things grow. It makes me happy to think that I have played a part in that.

Every day I water them and have a chat with them. How are you today my seeds? I hope that you will grow soon! Now I can encourage them to grow bigger and stronger.

I can’t wait to set up my other veggie garden and grow more things. I am especially looking forward to planting my tomatoes come spring.

Hi @Appleblossom

Your garden sounds wonderful! I tried cabbages a few years ago but they got attacked by white moths. I guess I need to put netting over them next time. I was so disappointed. I was just looking on google to find out how long cucumbers take to fruit. It says 50 - 70 days. By my reckoning I planted 63 days ago approximately. So they should be flowering soon. Can’t wait. I do need some sunny days for them though and I will probably have to pollinate them with a paintbrush. Isn’t it wonderful to bring your home grown produce into the kitchen to cook with? I have to go out the back and pick the few ripe lemons that are hanging over the fence from the neighbours tree.

I picked a few a couple of weeks back. I need to wait a couple of years for my own baby lemon tree to produce some fruit. Must remember to buy some organic citrus fertiliser in spring.

Re: My Place

@Oaktree Yes it is lovely.

Your Lemon tree sounds cool. There is one down my street and they share them ...

Win some and lose some in the garden. My corn did not work but the cabbage did.

I noticed one of my orchids is going to flower. Over the moon.

Re: My Place

Oh wow @Appleblossom

Orchids are hard to grow.

Trick with corn is to plant close together and then knock the heads together to help pollinate them. When we first moved in here we grew a crop of corn out in our front yard. Gave a lot of it away as we had so much and it was all ripe at once. I want to buy a truckload of veggie soil and do some more planting out in the front yard. It gets the most sun out there because it’s north facing.

What colour is your orchid?

Re: My Place

Hi @Meowmy

Most things are in the greenhouses so the rain hasn’t affected them but my outside pots have received a lot of water. Will stop watering them for a few days after all this rain clears to give them time to dry out a bit.

Re: My Place

@Oaktree Your garden sounds wonderful and a growing concern.

My flowering orchid is yet to bloom, but will be white. I moved it and gave it some TLC. I have a red one which has not flowered at all ... working on it ... lol

Hi guys,

I am all excited. This afternoon I was looking at Facebook and 5 hours earlier someone had posted that there were a ton of pots on their verge. I was not very hopeful that there would be any left after 5 hours but because it was only the next suburb over I thought that I would take a drive and see. I scored a large terracotta pot and a small one and 9 plastic pots. Oh and also a good sized self watering pot. They had a ton more but I thought I should leave some for others. It was posted on my buy nothing page. Such a great invention!

Then when I came home as I was closing up my greenhouses, I noticed the first few flowers on my cucumber plant. Will have to buy a small paint brush for pollinating by hand. So excited!!! Hopefully not long to go before I get some actual cucumbers. Happy days… will just need to buy some tomatoes to make a salad as my lettuce is ready to eat.

How is your orchid going @Appleblossom

Is the flower opening yet?

Hi Mumma Bear @Owlunar

How is your garden doing?
