Welcome and getting started

Loneliness

Loneliness

I have come onto this site because I want to deal with my feelings of loneliness and because what I have done to date has not been 100% successful

I think that my wellbeing is being undermined by it and I think that my mental health is quite affected as well

I am sure it is possible to overcome loneliness though at the moment I am not sure how to do it

I do everything I can to avoid loneliness and I am afraid of the feelings of powerlessness it gives rise to

If anyone has suggestions or advice I would be grateful for your replies

Hey @Julie7 Welcome to the forums, it's so great that you're reaching out. I hope you find this to be a supportive community.

What sorts of things have you done in the past to combat loneliness? 💝

Re: Loneliness

hi @Julie7

Welcome to the Forums.

I suffer from loneliness, too. Sometimes so intensely, it feels like I could die!

I even put myself in social situations, aswell, like visiting church friends, coffee shops, online communities, etc. Last night I went out to the pub. I met the owners and stayed late with the staff, only to come home feeling awfully lonely! Sometimes I feel very anxious, or depressed, but challenge myself to go out and talk anyway.

I even have children, too, but still feel so sorely lonesome. Like today...

I don't know what the solution is.??

I do believe there are different answers for different people. Some folks are content being their own best friend and eventually find that out... Other folks like having someone looking back at them, like Echo, I suppose...

Re: Loneliness

Hi @Julie7

I struggle with loneliness too.

If you go look at Our Stories you will find a thread called Living With Loneliness. Maybe if you take a look at that thread that may help you. It is pinned. Sorry I don’t know how to link it.

Re: Loneliness

What do you do about it @Oaktree ?

Re: Loneliness

I have actually recently joined a social group for women. The last 2 weeks I have been out on 4 coffee dates. It’s a little awkward because I am not much for chit chat but I am pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I need to make more friends.

Re: Loneliness

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my post

In the past I have kept going until the feelings go away or until I come up with an idea

I think I will be honest with people and tell them I am lonely and see how that goes

In the past when someone mentioned that they were lonely I was afraid to admit my own feelings on the subject though now I will be more inclined to say that I am also having that experience

I have been reluctant to be busy and taken a lot of rest however this reduces my contact with others

I definitely would like more contact with others

Getting a partner seems like the best solution

I don't like to worry about myself too much and I like to be happy around others

Loneliness puts a road block in the way of these things which I find frustrating

Until I read the link and the piece about loneliness on the Lifeline website there were a few things I wasn't aware of

It is as if I do a lot but without the depth of being with people my relationships became shallow

In a short space of time I have found my life to be meaningless to me

Now I want to catch up

It is not all bad

I want a life though

I am really grateful for this forum because I had not found a way around loneliness beforehand

If it is possible to be lonely for a very long time then it is also possible to be free of it as soon as the solutions reveal themselves

I'll have to work at it and I will have to tell the truth instead of giving false impressions and putting on an act

Right now I am still quite lonely however that is going to change

Re: Loneliness

Hey there @Julie7 ! You've come to the right place. Honestly, it was these very forums that helped me feel less lonely when I was going through a difficult time in life. I withdrew from the world as I felt they didn't understand me. Coming to these forums allowed me to communicate with those who truly understood and were able to give me a sense of hope.

I hope you find that too @Julie7 . You are not alone.

@Oaktree @Kyle1 - you may want to read @Julie7 's above post as you were not tagged.
