Smell is triggering

Smell is triggering

Can anyone help me?

Lately I have been smelling cigarette smoke but there is no one smoking. The smell was in my room last night and it triggers one of the abusers. I can smell it so clearly and it reminds me of one of the guys. The smell is so strong. Not sure if this is like hallucinations but with smell instead of seeing something/someone???

How do I overcome this? Why is this happening now? Does anyone have any advice/suggestions?

@BlueBay. I'm sorry both you and @Former-Member are feeling emotional today.
Sometimes nothing has been done to cause it. Sometimes it's purely that we are all emotional people and as such, we can be triggered easily.
Take some time to breath. Have a chat with @NikNik.
Am thinking of both of you.

I feel shattered too. I'm actually shaking.

I thought I might get an explanation, not this. Wow! Now everyone is going to read this and think I've said something terrible. That's not the case, whoever reads this. I am not a mean person, I would never intentionally hurt someone. It's obviously a misunderstanding. All I wanted was an explanation, I never expected this. @BlueBay

@Former-Member

After reading your response to me I have been crying so much because I don't understand.

I thought we were getting along so well and understood each other.

Sometimes when I get a few replies all at once I cannot reply back to everyone at the same time. I have 3 adult children, run a house and work. I am also struggling with my own mental health issues and being sensitive is one of them. Sometimes I have only a limited time to respond and I don't ever take preference of who to respond to.

I never ever want to hurt anyone's feelings. That is not my intention of being on here. I always came on here to chat to others in similar situations and support each other.

But yes sometimes I do answer other posts before your's but it doesn't mean that i don't care of think that I dont want you to messge me, because I do.

I hope you are okay, I know I am still struggling. Hope to be able to move on from this. If not, well then I will leave this forum for good.

Yes @BlueBay

It is very upsetting and a misunderstanding. It wasn't just that you weren't responding to my messages. I really don't like having a misunderstanding where everyone can read. This is embarrassing and I didn't write anything that was intentionally hurtful. I thought my messages were annoying you and you sounded angry at me in one of them.

I am very sensitive and get hurt easily as well.

@BlueBay & @Former-Member

Sorry I hate seeing people upset on these type of forums becuase we are all going through so much hurt we dont need extra. Please note this is all like email and sometimes its hard to know how to take the other person. I had a similar thing on another o/s forum where I was the only Australian and felt very left out. (here we go again @sadgirl again like you maybe we are twins in another life:)) I actually wrote to the group leader and she made realise that some people dont know how to respond to posts because the subject may trigger them so when they go to post it comes out not quite right, just how we have trouble explaining our feelings to someone else who doesnt understand BPD.

I definitely have had smell triggers except I didnt realise that's what it was. My father was an alcoholic and only drank scotch whisky, since thats all I remember about him ws the smell of whisky I find I cant drink it or if I smell it it gets me agitated. I also have a smell I cant work out that I remember from a very young age (months old remembering being in a crib) but dont know whats that about and not sure if I want to explore that just yet.

Re: Smell is triggering

Hi sadgirl, I think that might be the case for me, not saying that is definitely what's happening and it certainly doesn't take away from how bad the feelings and everything else that comes with those experiences. Hope your ok, take good care.

Re: Smell is triggering

Thanks Utopia, I appreciate your comments. It's taken many years of experiencing absolute awful sensations, smells etc. but i am noticing occasionally now some of those positive smell and sensations that are nice memories. It just shows me how much those traumatic experiences blocked out anything that was good as well. Thanks again, hope you going ok 🙂

Re: Smell is triggering

@PurpleFlowers. You are welcome.
Smell is one of our strongest memory scenses. So it was nice to read that you have been able to recall some good childhood memories through smell.
I think it's important for @BlueBay & others who are experiencing negative smell memories - that there are positive memories that are also waiting to come through.
I'm ok. Had to have a sleep. One of my coping techniques, when I can't work through an issue. Tend to feel better afterwards. As the issue is no longer front and center.
I hope your day has gone well.
