sent home by ED in a state

sent home by ED in a state

Hi everyone and thanks for the kind words.

For the first time I have really reached out for help and again my hand was slapped away by mental health services. I know looking at those websites where they said all the same horrible stuff as my partner totally triggered me and sent me into the worst episode I have had in my life. My anxiety was a 10, my depression was a 10, my rage was a 10, suicidal thoughts were a 10 and was feeling terrified and completely out of control. I spoke to mental health triage and they told me to go to the hospital. I left work at lunch (they think something else was wrong) went to local ED and was treated like a complete nuisance. I waited by myself in a hysterical state in the hospital for 2.5 hours, then a very young lady doctor spoke to me and maybe because of the state I was in but I'm definite she rolled her eyes at me. The they sent in the mental health woman who was the same lady I had in DBT, I was so glad to see a familiar face but that soon turned into complete rage. She asked how I was and then just started lecturing me how I should have my DBT book with me in the hospital, saying things that she didnt even know like you have felt this way before you will feel better again, I tried to explain no I havent felt this severe that's why I'm here because I dont know whats going one with me, she actually then said to me "what did you hope to achieve by coming here" I told her to get breathing space to make sure I'm safe and others are safe, maybe check my meds and I was told by mental health triage to come. She said to me you know there are no real meds for BPD and you know you will get over this, meanwhile I'm trying to admit 2 other patients. No compassion I was basically treated like a child having a tantrum (classic BPD), she then walked off and said its going to be hours before anyone can see you I think you should go home. I then stormed off as my rage built that much I thought I was going to tear the ED apart. I then was so much in a rage and so much more depressed and feeling completely worthless I was adamant I was going to do something stupid just to spite her - I didnt obviously. I was hardly in a condition to drive but I made it home. I had sent a text to my partner from the hospital. When I got home I just collapsed in bed in a total mess and what happens I get another lecture from my partner - basically the exact same thing.

So it appears no one gives a shit if you have BPD and well I had to make a decision over the weekend I guess do I want to live or not. If I do I have to know that its a lonely path as there is no one in my life to support me physically, not even mental health services! I guess I want to keep going otherwise I wouldnt be here. Things are now much better at home, I'm calm but not sure how I'm feeling except for guilty, very ashamed and stupid.

When I told this lady that I was going to be reassessed so that my meds could be reviewed she said I was wasting peoples time and that my GP has no idea and no one really understands BPD.

WAY TO GO MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES!!!!!

I have only learnt that I will never reach out again, it seems the very few times I have in my life I get mocked and get no help and made to feel even worthless by society and mental health services and it just secures my beliefs that people are horrible and nasty and I would rather live my life in total isolation.

Re: sent home by ED in a state

Thanks @Former-Member

I just think it's just wrong in so many ways. I know you can live with it because you're a survivor but you (and others) have a right to be treated with dignity and not assaulted. I kind of like it that these things are not about what we deserve, because most days I don't think I deserve shit, but it's more basic that that, like you're human, so this is how you should be treated. And you weren't.

Having said that, it's generally not all that difficult to make a complaint and let some light into the practice. I don't know what state you're in but in my view, you're generally better going to a mental health complaints commissioner, MH community legal centre, ombudsman etc., someone external to the hospital who can support you and take it forward... otherwise you'll get a PR apology along with SFA.

Hi @Former-Member,

Thanks so much for your support. I know you have a lot on your plate dealing with MI and being a carer. It is good you stood up today 😊. I'm pretty passive and submissive but I will consider taking it further once I've completed my studies. I have had experiences with NEAMI before and they were excellent. However in my state their funding slashed this year and now don't have much of a presence here. I have done the flourish program with them and it helped me to begin to get a grip on the reality of living with my MI.

I think it's a great idea to add your poetry here. Some people in the past have there own ongoing threads/discussions on their writing or there are some you can add too.

@CherryBomb created a new discussion for this this morning, perhaps she had you in mind😉. You can click on the link below

Poetry and thoughts

but if you prefer to have your own home for writing that's great too. I hope you don't mind me giving directions. It feels like I've done it a few times lately.

Lastly no need to apologise, I knew who you meant. Thanks again for your kind words. It's been lovely to have you around and see your positive input, even when struggling yourself. Wishing you all the best 💜🤗💐

Thanks @-Rayne-,

I'll think about it once I've finished my TAFE studies and have time to think through it more carefully. I think it was helpful for me to document it here. Wishing you the best. Around for you in the upcoming weeks if you need 💜🤗💐

@Appleblossom,

yesterday I journaled my experiences from my hospital visit starting on page 4 here. I am really not wanting attention from the post but at the same time wanted you to read it to know that we all have our crosses to bear. I couldn't bring myself to tag anyone in this thread but wanted to connect with you over it. I really wrote it for three reasons, one to kind of document it and two to help others know that are not alone and three. I guess, was to get support in how to deal with this in a way I can cope with that might help others in the future.

Re: sent home by ED in a state

Just an update. I spoke to my care coordinator of my mental health team this afternoon and she was supportive of me filing a complaint and is sending out the appropriate paperwork. I think it is for an independent organisation. Technically my mental health team is part of the same hospital network so I guess I'll see when I get it. She did say she has heard of others getting similar treatment.

That's good @Former-Member I'm glad you are getting the paperwork!! Sad to hear others are treated similarly by the hospital:(
I really hope it makes a difference.

Re: sent home by ED in a state

Thanks @Former-Member. I hope it's not too daunting. I am actually really chicken to do it but feel like I need to do it. The more people speak up the better for those in the future.

Re: sent home by ED in a state

Hello @Former-Member Yes so often we have a range of motivations and so do others .. but it is worth it if we can sift through and process it.

I have always known .. about the "crosses" others bear. Unfortunately I have seen rough manhandling .. of both my brother and sister .. and through research can tell my father endured a lot, as well as most of the things I have seen in orphanages etc since I was 6. I thought I was relatively lucky and worked hard to avoid bad treatment.

It is great that you were able to lodge a complaint and get support to do it.

Sadly, I could relate to you "running away from home". I did that a lot when I was in my marriage .. would rush out the door in the night .. felt safer walking the street in anonymity. It is only now that I am getting some sense of what are normal boundaries.

Keep nurturing the part of you that believes: YOU are worth it.
